MELBOURNE Storm NRL chief executive Brian Waldron has defected to the new Super 15 rugby union franchise Melbourne Rebels.
The Rebels, who are set to join an expanded competition in 2011, lured Waldron across after five years in his position with the NRL champions. The Storm staff, coaches and players were told of his departure today.
Waldron's position at the Storm is to be filled by the club's former chief operating officer Matt Hanson, who takes over the position, effective immediately.
Hanson was a former chief financial officer of the St Kilda Football Club, and general manager finance and administration at Etihad Stadium.

I am devastated - he has made the club the most professional in the League and he has gone.

Brian - thanks so much we are really going to miss you.

I think the writing was on the wall with the new NRL structure - his expertise would have made him and ideal Gallop replacement but without News Ltd his political enemies would not let that sit.

I don't know Hanson but we need someone with drive - he is an accountant not a sports administrator - so I am a bit concerned.

I had a feeling he would be gone. I read yesterday that a high profile NRL figure was being lured by the melbourne franchise. It made sense that it was him, he obviously enjoys the challenge of building up a club and I am sure he will be successful in union. It is a big loss for us IMO

This could be a very good thing.
The Storm and the Rebels can find a lot of areas where they can help each other - shared training facilities - cross promotional events - joint season tickets - even a chance for some young storm players not good enough for firstgrade to try another code.
Waldron will know the real battle is to get fans of AFL to have a look at both codes of Rugby, so he won't be trying to destroy the Storm, while some other CEO might have gone down that route.

The club is bigger than any individual.
The clubs success is mainly due to our coaches and players.
However, I must give credit to him for hosing down the hysteria surrounding the Greg Inglis assault case.

YES! that would be fantastic. i remember reading somewhere that even he emphasised the importance of using the rebels as an ally, rather than an opposing code. let's hope will practice what he preaches. this really could be a blessing in disguise

I wouldn't be so sure about that. While i don't think he'll try and destroy the Storm, he's now employed by an opposition code and his job first and foremost is to build up that club by trying to get fans to the game regardless of where they come from be it Storm, AFL or soccer.

I've little doubt that if sees an opprtunity to grow the club/code then he'll take every one of them regardless of what it will do to the Storm. He did the same thing when he defected from his old code in AFL which he grew up on so i'm sure he'd do it to RL as well.

I have mixed views on this ??...my main concern is that it appears that he has been replaced by one of his mates who may not have the best credentials.

Why did the club not sit back and assess it's strategy and then shop around for the ideal candidate ??.

He's done a good job for you guys but I reckon he's had this position on the table ever since he talked-up the Rebel franchise months ago.

You are so wise Evenflow.
There is no way in the world, he's going to give Storm a thought once he he sits in his new office at the Rebels.
Heard him on the radio and on Fox Sports and it was the first time I heard him stuttering a little..He just couldn't waiting to get away from the reporters on Fox.

this is disappointing. bye brian!

but could this put another dent into the AFL! if so, who cares where he works, afl gets too much praise!

Get your hand off it. Nothing is going to put a dent in the AFL in Melbourne.

As for Waldron going... all the best to him as he did very well for us and I don't think him leaving is going to hurt our club at all.

Ahhh... Matt Hansen was bought over from St Kilda by Waldron.

Matt’s former position with the Melbourne Storm was that of Chief Operating Officer, and he comes to his new position as a former Chief Financial Officer of the St Kilda Football Club, and General Manager Finance and Administration at Etihad Stadium.

And having a bloke with a finance background can't hurt us can it?
