Is Ponga worth spending $1.5million on or could he end up the next Milford/Hunt?

Kalyn Ponga could pen the richest deal in NRL history as the face of the Dolphins in 2023, but two former players have warned there’s plenty more to consider than cash.

The Dolphins would need to pay Ponga around $1.5 million per season to pry him away from Newcastle.

The 23-year-old is contracted until the end of 2024 but the final two seasons of the deal are options in his favour.
Ponga must decide by June 30 next year if he’ll trigger his 2023 option.

Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett has missed out on a host of high-profile players and Ponga is the only genuine superstar available for their inaugural season in 2023.

Bennett is expected to throw the kitchen sink at the Maroons superstar, and could offer Ponga the captaincy as well as making him the highest-paid player in the game.

Pongs should hold out for $1.8 at least.

Not because he’s worth it, but because he can.

I Agree. One was Cooper Cronk who loved to play out every second of his signing with the Roosters. Talk about a Prime Donna.
Yes cronk the sell out, playing for the roosters at a million dollar a season salary, no ponga think about the poor knights.. please gagf

The knights can suffer like the rest of us bottom feeders.

Having some influence here on the troll, but in good faith support of Redcliffe, I think we offer $1.7 and close the deal.

We can do what the dogs do, sign over cap and then unceremoniously dump the ones we don’t want.

Put a clause in the contract giving us the right to dump a signed player at any time for any reason. Hopefully the agent is too high or drunk to pick it up. Spike the fat loafers beer so he keels over and pressure the player to sign.

Hardball Dolphins.

Hate the Knights all you want. Just know that your club could have kept him if they really wanted too but chose to put their eggs in a different basket

How'd that work out?
We offered Kalyn a good deal. Knights threw more money than we could match as they had tonnes. They had a NSW Cup standard team at the time based around local talent. They also went after Matt Scott.

They're now trying to poach Nanai from us and signed half a dozen women from NQ. There's a few other ex-Cowboys in their squad. The club is no longer collecting wooden spoons since it has punted its local juniors. Many of them moved over to Canterbury. Look how they've gone over recent seasons!

Does the Hunter have a strong rugby league community capable of producing talent, or are their juniors just abnormally shit?

They offered Ponga a deal based on his talent. He was earmarked as a super star and the Cowboys wanted unders, and got burnt. It happens

They enquired about Matt Scott yes but his injury situation made it untenable. They were also not the only club to do that

Nanai is on many clubs radars yes, hes a good young prospect and a position that Newcastle is weak in now. Perhaps if the Cowboys didnt throw silly money at 2 halves that have been generally ordinary recently they might have some cash to keep their good jnrs around. Ironic isnt it

Newcastle is one of the new licences in the NRLW. They need players to fill their roster much like the Dolphins do. Are you suggesting the girls in Nth Qld, where there is no NRLW team, shouldnt be signed by one of the 6 NRLW clubs? weird take

Many being 2? Only 1 of which was in starting 17 regularly. Not really a relevant point but ok

Newcastles jnr system has been in tatters since Tinkler went belly up. Jnr pathway investment was rudderless for years and the Knights are paying the price right now, yes. Its a huge reason why theres been a huge change over in the Knights pathways staff recently with the mind to turn it around. It will but unfortunately it takes years to 180 the mess. The Cowboys have been running on local juniors for awhile too and look where they are, so are they "abnormally shit" or just mismanaged?

Food for thought

Cowboys have lost the following juniors since 2015.

Brandon Smith.
Jerome Hughes.
Jake Clifford.
Kalyn Ponga.

Imagine how strong the Cowboys would be if that was their spine today?

Newcastle paid overs for Ponga. There was a lot of talk in the media about how risky it was to throw so much money at such a young and inexperienced player.

Cowboys recruitment and retention has been poor. Green played his hand in that. Still doesn't change the fact Newcastle has identified North Queensland as a target area for players. The sad fact is Newcastle is no longer an RL nursery and has become a burden on the game.

Fair argument that outside of Ponga, those players dont get anywhere near their potential in the Nth Qld system. Its a straw man argument that many fans of weaker clubs make, more than a few Knights supporters over the years included, and its folly

Overs is a relative term. They took a punt and it payed off cause in less than half a season $600k was seen as unders

Newcastle in recent years have signed players from all over the NRL. They got more than their fair share of Roosters at one stage to try and build some stability and it worked. As youve already pointed out inadvertently, plenty of other clubs have targeted Nth Qld for talent recruitment too, Newcastle arent on their Pat Malones there.

The reality is Newcastle have a whopping 3 players that have come out of the Nth Qld system in their squad. 3 players, hardly worth getting so upset about in reality.

Yes the Newcastle jnr system had misfired of late, nothing new there however plenty of players out of the Hunter are thriving in the NRL so the talent is there and with the steps the Knights are taking recently the tap will be turned on again.

Question is, what are Nth Qld doing about their jnr woes?

Cowboys are in a rut. It's hard for us to recruit players as Townsville isn't the first place that players from out of town want to live. Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney have a massive advantage in this department.

It's disappointing to see Newcastle target the Cowboys. As a regional team they would know how hard it is to recruit players from out of town. If they're going to use my club as a nursery then they're just another Roosters or Storm to me.

Ive just got this picture of Clint back in the 1980’s, his then wife used to run through the old Betamax tapes of games with him.

Then I suppose they would enjoy Magnum PI and Alf.

We could use her at the Tigers!

Its time for a coaching loan scheme. Put the failing Benny on the market and bring in a top 4 coach. Sunglasses and a Tesla.

Someone who’s moved on from typewriters and landlines.
