Redcliffe put their hand up

The Sunshine Coast Lightning Netball team is a joint venture between the Storm and The University of Sunshine Coast but the relationship with the Sunshine Coast Falcons RL club is a feeder arrangement which could change if the clubs choose to. But at least in the short to medium term the Storm seem to be pretty settled in. I would imagine things might change down the track if the Vic RL start producing juniors that make it to the Storm's ranks.

Is the academy that was mentioned previously part of the Falcons club/Storm arrangement.. or purely a Storm owned/operated setup?

That's right. When the bulk of the game's revenue is provided by a broadcaster, they will have a lot of say on the matter. Especially when they own the largest RL club in the world and their television empire is on its knees. No other Pay TV company is in a position to challenge for the rights. Foxtel hold all the cards.

People forget News Ltd wanted the NRL to be a 14 team competition. The only reason we are at 16 is because a court order forced the NRL to readmit Sydney Souths.

Would we even have the Titans if Sydney Souths didn't fight their way back into the competition?

I don't see any interest from the networks for a ninth game.

Wasn't there an article a few weeks back saying the plan is to add another Brisbane team and then wait for one of the other clubs to fall over to bring it back to 16?

Dolphins are probably be the only team that has a realistic chance of getting in. I fully support the Dolphins bid. It will provide a good geographic spread and has wealth and prestige to back it up.

But that's the thing...we've been conditioned to think we need them otherwise we're dead. They need us just as much if not more or they will bleed money.

No expansion is what happens when we are beholden to a media power like News Ltd. We need the all clear from them before we expand.

Surely all News Ltd gets to do is say "we aren't paying extra". What other power do they have to decide about expansion. I think really the issue is the clubs do not want expansion because that takes money away from them and also threatens their existence especially the small but powerful suburban sydney clubs.

That's exactly it. There's only so much filling in the pie, and cutting it 18 ways, instead of 16, means each slice is reduced in size.

Maybe keep this thread about Dolphins NRL bid..

Potential names:

1) South Queensland Dolphins
2) Moreton Bay Dolphins
3) North Brisbane Dolphins
4) Brisbane Dolphins

Previously preferred MB Dolphins however would not mind SQ Dolphins either.

I like the sound of SEQ Dolphins a bit like how the Giants use GWS instead of Greater Western Sydney

Do you need the "east" though? makes it a bit of a mouthfull and "South" serves the same purpose - its not like we will likely every have a "South West Queensland"

I like any of the options though really, SQ, Morton Bay or just plain Brisbane all work

Even though the letters stand for South-East QLD I would make the official name SEQ Dolphins (like GWS) short to the point and retaining the Dolphins brand links it to their history.

It's a storm initiative (basically to get access to local SC juniors). I don't think the Falcons have anything to do with it other than being the local feeder side.

I like South Queensland Dolphins, that is the best out of those 4, but what about, Sunshine State Dolphins, or East Coast Dolphins

SEQ sounds much better than South Queensland.

Another name I like the sound of is East Coast Dolphins. With a name like that they could team up with Easts Tigers, with both clubs represented by name and cover a massive catchment area that will make them stronger than the Broncos.

There's history behind the name and location that makes it very important.

"Redcliffe became Queensland's first colony in 1824; however, it was soon abandoned for Brisbane."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcliffe,_Queensland
Yeah but, South Sydney Rabbitohs!, instead of Botany Bay Butchers, i'm more of getting a broader name to represent more areas than just Redcliffe, besides the bid has already came out and said they won't be calling the NRL bid "Redcliffe".

Here's my reasoning for East Coast Dolphins, if they somehow joined their catchment and juniors to Easts Tigers (who cannot use their mascot but reside as the 2nd Suncorp team), Sunshine Coast Falcons (who only get i'd say 3-4 Games a year in their town) and cannot play at Redcliffe but keep the mascot and main colors, Big wins for all.
EAST, COAST, DOLPHINS
Colors of RED, WHITE, Aztec GOLD, BLACK
easts and falcons both have these two extra colors, falcons are more gold, easts are more orange.

Originally i thought if the Dolphins went out on their own, just add Grey, and Gold to their colors and be like the opposite to the Cowboys, and as SQ. But adjoining 3 Qcup teams to basically half the broncos territory is better, and they'd be far enough north not to encroach that much onto both titans and bronx for sponsors etc

One of the good things about the Dolphins bid is that they actually have a larger asset base than the Broncos already so they will be able to compete from the get-go, plus will have more history behind their brand than the Broncos. It is one of the huge pluses for the Dolphin's bid.

I like this idea. Getting Easts and Sunshine Coast on board will make them far stronger. Broncos cannot really argue against it as Easts have stated their intent to enter the NRL, so the Tigers area is already lost to them.

Broncos can then focus more on the northern, southern and western suburbs of Brisbane, plus Ipswich.

I'd add Wynnum Manly to the Dolphins' catchment to create a true east vs west divide.

That's an excellent point. I've always believed an established BRL brand has a huge advantage over the Bombers for this very reason.

Yeah, it's a nice position to be in to have a few good Brisbane bids floating around. It's a shame because I actually find Nick Livermore (CEO of the Bombers) to genuinely love the game and seems to have a lot of passion behind his project. I'm sure all bids do but it would be nice for the winning bid (if not the Bombers) to get him on board because he seems to be a good operator.
