You do realise the Dolphins bid is lightyears ahead of the West Coast Pirates, yeah? And I think we have hit the biggest problem with this bid! Moreton Bay is too far away from Suncorp, Sunshine Coast is way too far away from Dolphin Oval, The redcliffe immediate region is not big enough to sustain a successful NRL club, Dolphin Oval is not developed nearly enough to be the main stadium for a rival NRl club to the Broncos, trying to please everyone with this bid is going to be a likely disaster. St George in reality hasn't really worked trying to cover two very different regions and no reason to believe a Moreton Bay/Sunshine Coast Dolphins would either. Neither of those areas have modern NRL standard stadiums for starters!
The more I look at it the more the Bombers bid once again becomes the more attractive bid. Focused on reaching as many of the 2.5million people in Brisbane as possible, playing at the States best stadium every game, backed by successful businessmen rather than a pokie club. Take out the crap brand (which can be easily changed) and to me it looks to be by far the best chance of having a club that can rival the Broncos on and off the field and not end up another GC Titans. Where their bid can be strengthened is in both a brand change and in a concerted effort to link with QRL and the Brisbane grass roots clubs in some way. That can offer some level of differentiator from the Broncos culturally.
DOLPHINS ASSETS = $100 MILLION
PIRATES ASSETS = $0
Perth Oval = 2nd rate shithole in need of refurbishment, despite having a half-arsed one not long ago.
Dolphin Oval = Small but has character and similar 'on top of the action' design as Lang Park.
DOLPHINS HISTORY = established 1947, played in the top flight of BRL/QLD Cup since 1960/1996. Plenty of superstars have come from this prestigious club to represent Queensland and Australia, many of them still alive and able to be used for marketing.
PIRATES HISTORY = A decade fielding an underage team in a NSW competition, routinely getting flogged on the field. No one of note has come through this side to become a genuine superstar of RL.
Peter Cumins' business doesn't appear to be going too well. Shares for Cash Converters have gone from being worth over $1 to less than 20c. He's no Twiggy Forrest.
