Redcliffe put their hand up

Yes, it’s a thing. On our number plates for at least 35 years. But it’s not premier competition club name material at all- just a tourist by-line.
It's also the official nickname of Florida, which is home to the Miami Dolphins.

Florida's nickname is "The Sunshine State," adopted officially by Florida legislature in 1970. Another nickname for Florida is The Peninsula State. All State Nicknames

This could get messy and end up in the courts if they use the bizarre name "Sunshine State Dolphins".

The final bid is the Dolphins. A brand so powerful that injunctions and trademarking battles have erupted over its use. The Gold Coast Titans initially attempted to adopt the name before the Redcliffe Dolphins filed an injunction.

NFL Properties also challenged local Sydney rugby league club, the Coogee Dolphins. Upon a variation to the design of Coogee's logo and a stipulation to never play gridiron in Australia, the Miami Dolphins consented.

Miami Dolphins went after a tiny RL club in a small suburban Sydney competition. There's no way they'll let a club in the world's largest "rugby" competition to use a name that could be identified with their team.

Phoenix Suns went after the Townsville Suns back in the 90s and won.

chicago bulls went after Bradford and Bradford ended up having to pay them.

The Redcliffe Dolphins have submitted their bid to the NRL, in the hopes of being named the 17th team as part of the league’s expansion in Queensland.

Brisbane Dolphins Bid Director Terry Reader said the NRL wants to avoid “cannibalising” the Brisbane Broncos or the Gold Coast Titans.

“We operate in an unserviced market if you like, the north of Brisbane into Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast, that’s our key catchment,” he told Scott Emerson.

He said there had been $60 million spent on soccer and AFL facilities in their corridor.

“I think it’s really important for rugby league to make sure we don’t lose that battle ground which is out in the biggest area and the fastest growing area.”

If they can get a decent stadium up there then they will have a strong case.

It's interesting most of the talk has been about cannibalising the Broncos but if you were to read what the Titans have had to say, they seem more concerned about it than Brisbane do

Does any other sport have the fear that RL has about its rivals? Never heard AFL say its worried about RL taking over lol

Shyte Melbourne might actually have to produce a player from Victoria. Lol 20 odd years and counting
Havent they had 4 or 5 so far? Ieremia, Mahe Fonua, Young Tonumaepia, and Richie Kennar.
End of day NRL needs to get off its arse and get more kids playing so Storm can pick the cream to develop into professionals. Its not the Storms job to get kids playing the game in Melbourne.

So just like everything else the Storm shouldn't have to do anything but sit back with their hand out waiting to be handed whatever they want?
Wtf? Storm have the best development program in rugby league. Where those talented 16 years olds come from no one cares. It’s not 1976 nswrl lol. it’s the nrls job as the leader of grass roots and the organisation responsibility for jnr player numbers to be funding programs that get kids playing the game. It’s the storms job to take the best of them and make them nrl stars, which they do with great success. It really is just a numbers game for the most part.

So, let someone else do the hard yards then swoop in and cherry-pick what can benefit you. Funny thing is you seem to think they should be applauded for this.

yes, let the people whose job it is do their job.
Then do your job which is to turn the best of them into NRL superstars.
Maybe if some of the sht NRL clubs spent more time doing their jobs rather than the NRL/NSWRL/QRL's jobs they wouldnt be so sht?
