My main point is how many times a game on average does a winger need to know whether to come in or stay out? Compare that to the number of times a fullback would be asked to make a one on one tackle. You can be badly exposed when defending on the wing which is why so many wingers have bad reputations as defenders.

For a fullback they have to understand where to stand and possition themselves when someone makes a break, how to limit their opponents space, when to come forward and give their opponent less time, or when to hold back for the opponents play... this is the difference between a good defencive full back and a no so good one. It not always size but technique and brains. Also where to possition yourself on ball returns, how deep, talking to you wingers etc.
Fullback is more important than the wing, and i don't like seeing wingers play fullback and fullbacks playing on the wing. Burt is a fullback and should play there if he is the best choice, i don't wanna see him on the wing, if hayne plays fullback promote Lett, or Inu to the wing.

I wont answer your other post as i've already basically answered .

However, games when wingers come in and get caught out is generally the same games that a fullback is called onto make a try saving tackle;-)

You can be badly exposed anywhere on the field, plenty of games when a winger hasn't needed to make many tackles due to the way that game is played, but no matter when a beak is made the last line of defense is the fullback, fullback is more important defensively as it is the last line of defense.

Fullback is more of a specialist position, name how many specialist wingers there are, wingers that have played wing since there junior days, very few, then name the specialist fullbacks since junior days? countless!. Everyone knows that if you can't find a position for someone in the backline you throw them on the wing and see what transpires, it's a beginners position.

If you're defending the tryline there's not going to be anything between the winger and the chalk. The fullback may be the last line of defence if a break is made but how often are they really forced to make a one on one tackle? Compare that to the amount of times teams spread the ball to try and score out wide per match. Saying it isn't a specialist position is just silly.
As for your statement about wingers getting caught out and fullbacks making one on one tackles being similar I would have to disagree. If you put a specialist fullback on the wing alot of the time they would struggle in defence.

Defence on the wing is all about positioning. There is a difference between a good defender and a good tackler. You can tackle like a champ but it you aren't in the right position then you can't make the tackle.
