Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

Do they need a halfback there though? I always thought (in the past) it was just rush the 6 guys in for the scrum, once they are set in position it's time off, the refs from memory don't even look around for a halfback or someone to feed it before blowing the whistle for time off.

I could be wrong though.

The official rule is as follows:

If a team is properly formed and ready to contest a scrum the head referee will call time off.

Source: http://www.nrl.com/portals/nrl/RadEditor/Documents/NRL Rules book 2013FINAL.pdf (page 64)

You're not ready to contest without a halfback.

Watching The INTRUST CUP(QCUP) yesterday & Jesus it was refreshing to have 1 ref make the decisions (THINK he went to VR twice) & back his decisions.

I know it is a level below NRL .But these refs have not had the bullshit ingrained into their reffing.
They call what they see & get on with the game.

Pity we have to talk about another full time blunder because that was a brilliant game in front of an outstanding crowd.

There have been plenty of howlers this year, but these two refs in the Panthers-Titans are by far the worst Ive seen. Not decisions on trys, but general play. If Titans won that game it would have been an absolute travesty.

It all comes back to hollywood with his "I would study tapes during the week so players couldnt get one up on me" when asked "so you would blow penalties for strips without seeing it being stripped" he said something like "of course, if they are serial offenders I don't want them getting one over me".

f**king joke, he started it. If you don't see it get stripped then it's not stripped.

How good are strip penalties. Default should be to assume lost ball, put the onus back onto actually holding onto the ball.

It was an odd ending to the WT V Parra game.

It probably deserved that grandstand finish but I don't think the old heart could have taken much more

Watching Matty Johns' monday night show and they claimed that Greenberg ruled out the bunker idea as it there is an apparent extreme cost in set up.

I am honestly struggling to figure out why it would cost so much. Its already been revealed that the refs simply get the TV feed (but with no sound), and then have a line to the TV producer to ask for different angles etc. What exactly would be the big cost in this?

Sounds to me like 2 foxtel boxes hooked up to a couple 60" TVs plus a couple phones that they can speak to the TV producers on when asking for different angles would be enough. There are never more than 2 simultaneous games of league on at any one time so I don't see what the problem is.

So 2 mobile phones and like you said, a couple of full HD 60" TVs and a subscription to foxtel are too expensive now??

f**k, i wish we had just signed a billion dollar TV deal so we could afford such 'luxuries'.......:roll:

No doubt they are trying to overcomplicate the whole thing by pricing up direct broadcast access and some sort of secured communication links between the grounds and the bunker when the whole thing could actually be done for about $10k up front and a few hundred per month in running costs.

The problem is they keep comparing it to the NHL set up, which is completely different given they can have 6-8 games going on at once and I believe get full control of angles, etc, while our video refs aren't anywhere near as complex.

At the ground you could see Brooks dive once the play went past him, the video refs can't have a brain to share

Obvious it was Brooks intent to try and get a penalty, and it worked, it's frustrating when the players find it so easy to con the refs
