If you ever saw the try he disallowed Boyd Cordner against Parramatta earlier in the season, you would know he is either incompetent or a cheat.
He is not cheating. He is however the very worst ex player to ever decide an obstruction rule. He denied parra a try for an obstruction during the season where the player caught on the outside not the inside so that's not his problem.
The overall litmus test for an obstruction is did the play restrict the defender in any way from making a play at the runner.
The manly players didn't ever look at Gower, he might as well been invisible.
The only reason they missed sandow was because Foran slipped over. If the play occurred 60 metres downfield , it wouldn't have been an issue.
I just don't think Patten has the ability to make an objective analysis of the play to the required standard.
The ex player was specifically placed in the vid ref position to make a call as an ex player - ie yes the letter of law says this but as an ex player what is your feel for the try. This is specifically why, the ex player makes the call on obstructions. It's not the NRLSs fault, the policy is a good idea in theory but unfortunately in Patten , they just don't have someone who truly understands the rule.

Now to top this off, when you have respected analysers of the game like sterlo, joey and gus ( no matter what you think of them personally) all agreeing that it was a try......I think we can see where the problem lies.
If you look at 90% of the obstruction howlers this year, Luke Pattens hands are all over them.
Time for some urgent retraining.

NRL needs more NYC refs. Shane Hayne pulls a hammy pre-game and the u20's ref has to step up & not one of 11 try's went to the video ref

The rookie was outstanding.

I thought he took pity on the Warriors in the second half; but overall he was excellent.

Yep was happy with both refs in the warriors roosters game. Can tell they haven't been in the NRL long. The sensible decisions and quick calls will be coached out of them very shortly

the locals didn't agree with the ref. Rooster offloads in the tackle, worrier fans thought it was knock on. ref rules that it was an offload. worrier fan says 'ah. it's gonna be one of those games...'

What difference would having the bunker style review system over what we have, the problem is not the system its the individuals making inconsistent decisions.

Hell if Fulton is involved it would be 1000% worse, he makes Ben Ikin look impartial

A bunker means you have the same people making decisions for every game, which should mean consistency.

I think he means fulton will be part of a review of refs this season.

Makes sense that they would get someone in to help with the review that hasn't played the game for 35 years. Might suggest going back to playing under a 4 tackle rule with leather balls and mounds of sand for restarts and goal kicks.

The simple answer is show some common sense with obstructions and let the video refs rule on forward passes. If we can see them on our TV screens surely they can too.

3 referees on now on the table, hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. What do you call a band with 3 wind instruments . . . Fart, Burp and Gast

The issue with this is education, just like the myth of the shepherd, people believe that a pass cannot at any time travel forward of the person throwing the ball.

This combined with issues with viewing it from a bad angle as well as issues to do with momentum mean its not possible.

Just to finish this off though, BOB f**kING FULTON!! FMD, that imbecile is not only the worst judge of talent in the world but the biggest arsewipe in the history of Rugby League.

Every error that is beyond obvious doubt should be pulled up and anything less than that 'play on'

Referees need to be open to 'on report' adjudication just as players are, not suspended for mistakes but relegated to lower grades when they influence a match needlessly. Referees should be protected from harm and abuse but not from inspection . . . they are not Catholic priests
