Ref's shocker costs Knights
BY PETER STERLING

I rate Sean Hampstead as a referee. As one of our senior whistle-blowers, he is generally in control and relatively consistent.

Unfortunately last weekend it is fair to say that he and his fellow officials had a shocker.

While the Rugby League Week magazine gave his performance a rating of three out of 10, I saw it more as a two. One of those points was for his attendance.

In every game there are contentious decisions. Some are 50-50 calls, others just plain wrong. Over 80 minutes they do tend to affect both teams, not necessarily evening out but generally not too lopsided.

That was until last weekend, when we saw Newcastle cop a veritable procession of tough calls against them in going down to the Dragons.

At the final whistle, the Knights were beaten by just eight points.

The biggest surprise was that it wasn't closer to 28.

In the aftermath, NRL referees coach Robert Finch has expressed his disappointment in Sean's performance, agreeing that there were some decisions that were incorrect and that he'd "had better games".

Predictably he defended the more controversial decisions involving a Chase Stanley try and James McManus no-try. In the referee's defence, the former wasn't his call.

There is no defence, however, against the litany of ordinary rulings that continually went against the home side as a result of Hampstead's whistle.

The Stanley try, given as a benefit of the doubt by the man upstairs, still beggars belief, although it isn't on its own. There have been a few similar situations in recent weeks.

On Sunday's Footy Show I highlighted five try-scoring incidents which have convinced me I now have no idea what constitutes a four-pointer these days.

They included a no-try against the Tigers' Beau Ryan in round 12 and favourable decisions for Mark O'Meley in round 14, Sam Perrett and Amos Roberts in round 16 and, of course, Chase Stanley in round 17.

Of the five, the only one that appeared to be legitimate was the one denied to Ryan.

O'Meley dropped the ball (or "separation" as they are calling it now) against the Panthers while attempting to score. But apparently that's OK if you put your hand back on it as it hits the ground. If the same thing happened on halfway, it's an obvious knock-on.

Roberts also lost the football two weeks ago against the Bulldogs but again got the nod. In his ninth year of first-grade football, Amos shook his head, ruefully knowing that he had bombed the opportunity. The green light showed that even our experienced players are confused.

In the same match, Perrett never got a decent play on grounding the football but did manage to brush it with both little fingers. That was good enough for a try.

Which brings us to the Stanley decision on Saturday night. If it was not so important, it would be downright comical. In no way did the talented youngster have any control of the football once it connected with the boot of Jarrod Mullen. I am all for the benefit of the doubt going to the attacking team, but not when there is no doubt.

After viewing these incidents, what I find totally confusing is that there is now no ownership of the football required in scoring a try.

When did this vital part of the game change so much that actually having the ball in your possession is no longer needed?

When questioned as to whether Newcastle and their fans should feel hard done by, Finch said that "anyone that looks at it in a rational manner and considers the errors made by players that contributed to tries may take another view".

Not me. That is a way-too-simplistic assessment that shows scant understanding.

From a man in his position, we should expect more.

Consistent poor calls made against one team have a devastating effect in the modern game when it comes to momentum, pressure, fatigue and even frustration.

Decisions have repercussions which may not be immediately obvious but which will be eventually felt.

For example, a bad decision which results in a line drop-out can lead to consecutive sets in defence and possibly more drop-outs.

All that tackling can easily lead to a mistake when the defending team finally gets the ball.

That mistake builds up further pressure and so on.

A try may eventually be scored many minutes after the initial tough call following the type of player error that Finch is alluding to.

However, make no mistake that the origin of such an error can often be traced back to a catalyst that occurred earlier in the game.

In my opinion, the Knights were forced to endure a more difficult night than they should have had to.

I'm not taking anything away from St George Illawarra.

They were good enough to take advantage of proceedings and went on to be the better side over the 80 minutes on the night.

But it is my belief that Newcastle were not afforded the same opportunity to be that better side.

Why is it that Sterlo seems to be the only person with half a clue in this entire f**king game?

Wow Sterlo must be reading my thoughts. :sarcasm:

If you got a multiple choice question asking which of the following is a try? a) Ryan
b) Roberts
c) Perret or
d) Stanley
I reckon 99% of people would get it wrong if they didnt know the video ref decisions.

I wonder if Sterlo would be singing the same tune if we had played the eels last Saturday.

Here, here!!

I'm not a fan of bagging refs as I dont believe any of them go out on the ground to make bad calls. It's a tough gig and if you've ever had to do it you'll get an understanding of just how hard it can be.

BUT, Finch's response to Hampsteads poor display is just weak as p#ss. Yes he admitted that The Bean had a shocker, but as is the case with every similar poor performance he is yet to come out and say that one side was disadvantaged.

Referees are always going to have a massive bearing on results. They seem to be stamping there authority on the game more than ever by blowing nit picking penalties. Lets face it, half the time its just the luck of the draw if you get penalised for laying on the tackled player too long or not marking straight. Basically if you make a tackle from marker on the dummy half these days expect to be penalised.

Look for refs evening up the penalty count aswell. One team might be on the wrong side of a lopsided count, so the ref wiil give a couple of nothing penalties to that side, generally on the first tackle so as to not benefit them too much.

This was evident on Saturday night when we had the ball in the dragons 20 towards the end of the 1st half. Bean gave the knights a few pens in a row basically on the 1st and 2nd tackles. The advantage in these pens were very minimal as we already had good field position and the only benefit was an extra couple of tackles. The defence doesnt have to retreat as much when defending on the line so the fatigue factor is also minimal.

*edit* :)

Peter Sterling, I dont recall once ever disagreeing with this blokes opinion. He has always given us a fair go, with no bias. I admire the bloke for being one of the very few in the RL world that seems to be able to make a point without having a personal axe to grind.

Finch on the other hand wouldnt piss on us if we were on fire. Its hard to say anything good about a man that tried to ruin our club, then over the past 5 years has done nothing but drag the game backwards. Really, whos kidding who here, how does he keep his job? He has a SL contract, they need to give him work so they tossed him the referee's boss job.

Said it once, I'll say it again. Referees decide the game, not the players. One of these terrible refereeing/video refereeing decisions is going to cost a side a semi-final spot or a grand final. Mark my words.

That side missing out on a semi-final spot due to terrible refereeing decisions is most probably going to be us.

That could be true too, but I'd be disappointed if there wasn't at least one more game where we got so blatantly rorted.

Jut two examples.

Knights beating Manly - ref had no influence over the result.
Manly beating Knights - ref had no influence over the result.

Refs have had atleast 2 good games this season ;-)

Bit of an overreaction from some.

Sterlo is spot on though. Dragons may have won still with better refereeing, or we may have won. The problem is, like Sterlo said, we weren't given the fair chance and the refereeing did not allow us the opportunity to prove we were the better side. That being said, considering how long we took to click, I think Dragons probably still would have won; but you can't be sure.

It's over now though, time to move on, sh*t happens, can't do much about it.

I wonder if the ref is to blame for Wes Naiqama not knowing that a fullback's role includes support play - you know, roaming around looking for offloads.

I wonder if the ref is to blame for stupid pushed passes on the first tackle when deep on attack.

I wonder if the ref is to blame that Dureau / Bailey are finally showing the inadequacies of talent they clearly have when it comes to the standard of first grade halves. One or two blinders don't make a career. Ewan McGrady won a Rothmans Medal ( Ewan who? ) and I'm sure we all remember Leo Dynevor. I imagine West Magpies have fond memories of his $350,000+ a year contract they signed him on after he played a brilliant half season with the Knights too...

I wonder if the ref is to blame for Danny Wicks pulling out Under 12 front rower stats week in week out.

I wonder if the ref is to blame for our wingers inability to shut down bombs and kicks in general play - Roosters game anyone? Was it Mr Beans fault that Vuna dropped a ball cold that went straight down his throat the other night?!

I wonder if the ref is to blame for Adam MacDougal ageing process.

I wonder if the ref is to blame for exposing what is an average Knights team, who has overachieved all season, and has shown in recent times a severe lack of depth in the halves / hooker spots.

Maybe it was the refs fault Seu Seu got sacked leaving a gaping hole when injuries struck.

Come on GET REAL, sure the refs have been a pain in the ass this year on occasions, but lets face it - we simply aren't good enough.

The games that we SHOULD have won , we didn't win. Warriors ( at home ). Roosters ( at home ). 2 home games we blew from dumb mistakes and lack of experience.

Neither could be blamed on the refereeing performances.

Anyone would think we are the only team all year who has copped a rough go from the refs.

A couple of weeks ago, the Penrith Panthers were on the back of WOEFUL refereeing against the Broncos, and still managed a 12-12 draw.

When the Knights have been put to the test, they simply don't have the depth, or ability to show they belong in the top 8.

The position the Knights are in on the table as of now, is just about the right spot when you look at our squad on paper in comparison to other teams.

Unfortunately there's nothing that you can do about it.

The Panthers/Knights game should be fun. Both teams usually get ripped off hardcore by the officials. With over 57% of penalties going against both teams... and both teams being on the wrong end of video referee rulings on trys.

Well, I have NFI what your post said. I saw it was from you and didn't bother reading it. Just replied with a simple word that I'm sure a lot of people would agree with :)
