It’s funny, when I was a kid, we had more dept stores, more supermarkets, more daily papers, more airlines. And we had half the population.

Coles, Woolies, BiLo, Jewel, Flemings, Franklins, SSW, Payless, Safeway, IGA.

Ansett, TAA, QANTAS.

Fosseys, Venture, Kmart, Grace Bros, Myers, Walton, Norman Ross, David Jones, Gowings, Youngs.

Brashes, Chandlers, Sandlia, Virgin, Waterfront, HMV, Sanity, Lawsons, Red Eye, Utopia, dept store record bars, independents.

The Mirror, Telegraph, Sun, SMH, The Australian plus all the suburbans.

Add Permewans to the supermarket list and also Clancys which is what most Flemings stores became when Flemings closed.

Department store wise there was Mark Foys, Mc Dowells and Buckinghams, i remember Buckinghams in Darlinghurst burning down in the late 60s.

Coles and Woolworths had variety stores back then also and some of them had great cafeterias.

Add East West to the airline list too.

Great list…..

I’d also add in some toy stores…

Toyworld
Uncle Pete’s
World 4 kids

Pretty sure there’s an uncle Pete’s still going up near Brookvale, and another in Dubbo.

I remember going to the Walton's at West Ryde a lot as a kid, would normally walk there with my nan from her place in Ermington. A bit of a hike. IIRC may have been split in two with a lane way down the middle.

Woolworths Variety. It was IIRC half supermarket half department store. The one at Seven Hills was definitely that and there was one in Parramatta too in the old Church Street mall, with another entry off George(?) Street.

The one at Wentworthville I think was more a department store but got rebranded as a Crazy Prices, which had a yellow galah in the logo. Across the road from there was Duffy Brothers Fruit Market. Had really good toffee apples. And behind there was a cash for cans trailer - every Saturday morning you would get something like 60c a kilo. Which was a lot of money to a 10 year old in the late 1980s.

There was an Uncle Petes at Mac Square, there is still a shop there but may be a different name.

The big one at Auburn was paradise as a kid, particularly when you were loaded with birthday money. In the same complex on Parramatta Road as Joyce Mayne.

When we moved to Kingsford in the early 70's there was a Woolworths variety store, it had the department store at the front and a small supermarket at the back, not sure what year it closed

Always remember both Woolworths and Coles both having variety stores on Liverpool St near where World Square is now, used to love going to the Coles cafeteria there, of course Coles had the big store that ran between Pitt St and George St not far from the King St corner in the CBD and to be honest i don't really remember Woolworths at Town Hall but it probably was there.

Even when i moved into the Newtown area in the late 90's there was still a Coles variety store on King St but it was really on its last legs and not much later Dendy cinemas took over the site.

In the mid to late 90s was when Coles and Kmarts that were accessible from both sides, got hemmed in.
Kmart cafes called Holly’s use to make pretty decent food. We’d get hot crinkle cut chips and milkshakes after school.

Holly's milkshakes were pretty bloody good. I think the Penrith one disappeared early 90's.

I remember Holly's from the K Mart at Blacktown - that one (K Mart, not Hollies) may have been the first in Australia. Worked for there for about a year in the late 90s doing night fill, it was gone by then. Still there, Coles is not (moved across to Westpoint) but can't remember if K Mart simply expanded or another store moved in.

My old man would buy ammunition at Kmart Warriewood Square in the mid 80's, they had a whole range of firearms too...different caliber rifles, scopes etc.

Imagine that now...so weird.
