What do we think of the numbers? And what do we want to set the salary cap to?

Oh, Lord...if we set it anywhere near Shenzen and New England levels, about $8.8 million, there's no way clubs like Ipswich could possibly get to that level...

...but if we chop the cap to $8 million, Shenzen and New England will probably get bloody well hammered!

I would like to see the free agents' salary levels analyzed before deciding on a salary cap level.

I think that's the point of a salary cap though; it restricts established talent being located in one area and forces recruitment of young talent for rerates, and the implementation of tactics in the game.

I personally think something like 7.5m would be interesting, or 7.8m. It would require us to scour the database for depth, and recruit young talent in the bid that they'll emerge for rerates.

I think $8,000,000 ought to keep things interesting. The teams with the most to spend tend to be those who took a bashing in ratings *and* had a number of retirees to take a slice out of their salary caps. I think Sydney had 3-4 retirees, so their salary cap is artificially lowered by the fact their squad is smaller and will need extra players to reach the 29.

So, have we decided we are going on contract/caps?

I fear it could end this league. Already struggling to fill the teams, and the thought of salary caps/contracts could be off-putting for the casual.
Just my thoughts is all

Hmmmm...depends upon the rules' design (Chris, I believe, will make them as simple and as easy to understand as possible), and how much help can be given to new coaches about the rules...

...but I think anyone who has watched ESL or NRL have an idea what a salary cap is, and should be able to pick up the concept of contracts fairly easily. (Anyone who starts in rugby sims without this knowledge, should be able to learn fairly quickly (and if necessary, a league-granted dispensation or two can help the new manager correct egregious errors that veterans know better than to make.)

It should be relatively simple to keep track of salary cap. It's a set number that won't change, and it's likely to help new coaches since it's forcing me to sack guys like Cameron Smith.

Contracts are a different kettle of fish. It might be worth holding off on introducing those until we have a more stable player base.

Lets start with the cap and simply engage in discussion on how contracts will work through the season.

We have to have something to argue about or we'll get bored :p

I agree with that...as the new managers' learning curve would not be as steep that way.

Can you sack Iain Duncan-Smith, whilst you're about it, Chris? (I'll donate A$100,000!)

I'm definitely in favor of just a draft. Maybe a top 13 instead of 17 would help the spread of talent a bit. Seems like keeping less people would function similar to the cap and contract system.

That being said, if you guys can nail down a simple intuitive system for the salary cap, then i can do it. Just on the contracts it seems easy for a coach to f**k himself, realise he has f**ked himself and leave, leaving a new coach already pre f**ked. I guess i'm scared of a system that will punish players, especially considering how dense and unintuitive the sim already is. More layers of frustration doesn't make too much sense.

Here is the download for all players salary cap according to the methodology I outlined above.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7FH-gVgfpTlT0RZc2E2aE11Tm8/view?usp=sharing

Let me know that you have problems downloading it.

OK, Drew - I had problems downloading it. (Well, technically, it only looked like I did, the Google Doc preview view was all buggered up.)

However, the header labels appeared out of kilter - just double checking, are they are supposed to go, from Column A onward?

Player Name
Team Name
Team Orders Position
Player Position
Attack
Defence
Kick
Goal Kick
Temperament
Health
Form
AVERAGE
SCALE
SALARY

with the remaining columns, save for the one labeled Temp by you being the Player ID number, being immaterial for drafting purposes?

Badge - Yep, the headings for the columns are stuffed for some reason but what you've identified is correct.

AFS - I think a Salary Cap is ok. Its basically a simple way of preventing experienced coaches from taking advantage of the player pool and hoarding players, meaning newbies have a chance to get decent talent.

I believe we've got Goldy and Drew both working on the same thing  Are you guys in communication? Or both working on parallel fixes for the same issue?

If we go with the salaries as Goldy posted earlier, set the cap to 8,000,000, and decide on a number of players to keep - we're off and can start the draft as soon as all sides have decided who to let go.

Not sure if we are

In any case, it isn't hard to do so the result should be the same.

Shall we set a day and time for the draft once Goldy updates the player pool, we all can look and have elected for who we will be 'dropping'?

Updating all player stats for the player pool would be a crazy time consuming exercise, so I'm suggesting that I realise the ratings document so people can scout who they'd like to pick up. That way, we only need to worry about updating players as they're picked up.

That work?

Shall we aim to start the draft on Saturday/Sunday? Assuming we get all sides configured by then.

Sorry boys, just came off night shift and flew home this morning. Absolutely stuffed.

I think I have done most of the hard work in Excel, just prettying up the rosters and getting the all clear from Mis.

The average wage is $240k, that times 30 is $7.2M

I have quickly skimmed through the posts. Here are my recommendations.

Salary Cap - Between $7.2 - $7.5M
Squad Size - 25
Retaining - I say we keep 13 players heading into the draft. That would put 157 players into the draft. So the draft would last approximately 11 rounds. Which isn't too bad and it would shake up the rosters.

Once I finish tidying up the rosters, I will send it through to Mis so he can approve then hopefully distribute from there.

The roster will be similar to what Drew has put up. Hopefully the rosters will help the managers manage their squad and become more involved.

Given the way the sim likes to spit injuries about, a 29 man squad is almost a requirement.

Even with that, we had some squads struggling to field fit teams last year

I don't mind 13 or 17. 13 will probably see an active draft period, which will be more fun.

I think 8m cap and 29 players is fine.

I'll announce my squad tonight.

Mis,

I will send you through the rosters now. Drew did you want me to include you? If so, what is your email?
