Gasnier deal's details hinge on meeting of club chiefs

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA are edging closer to signing their prodigal son Mark Gasnier - possibly in time to play Penrith in round 17 - and the final details of the intricate deal with the former Test centre are set to be clinched at today's chief executives' conference.
The meeting between the club bosses, at the NRL headquarters at Moore Park, is likely to prove crucial in finalising the Gasnier deal, said his agent George Mimis.
Mimis, as well as the Dragons, have denied suggestions that a contract has already been lodged with the NRL, awaiting final approval.

Rather, it is believed that the two parties have remained in fairly constant dialogue over the final points of the expected three-year deal.
Mimis said yesterday he wanted to wait until today's meeting of the club bosses - during which some finality may be given to future salary cap changes - before he agreed to any deal for Gasnier, who quit the Dragons to play rugby union with Stade Francais.
''There's been lots of dialogue about the contract structures but no contract's been lodged [with the NRL],'' Mimis said last night.
Asked if today's chief executives' conference could be crucial in finally ending the speculation surrounding Gasnier, Mimis said: ''Correct.''
Mimis, however, admitted the negotiations were being delayed by the protracted discussions with the NRL over third-party deals as well as the issue of how much of Gasnier's contract would have to be included in this year's salary cap.
Asked when he expected the deal to be done, Mimis said: ''That's a question that's better posed to the NRL or the salary cap auditor. We're waiting for them to clarify a few things.''
While some at Wests Tigers even believed Gasnier might sign in time to play in Friday night's blockbuster against the Dragons at Kogarah, a more likely scenario would have the 28-year-old making his club return against the Panthers a week later.
The meeting between the club chiefs, and the discussion over salary cap changes will also have wider implications for rugby league.
With decisions expected on changes to third-party deals, long-serving player concessions, bulked up representative payments and cap increases, the meeting stands to be one of the more crucial in recent times, given the pressure on the NRL to stop the game's stars quitting the competition and even the code.
Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said he expected ''that we would have some reasonable level of agreement on the areas that will be modified in the cap - both in terms of the numbers but also the areas of concessions, how they may work in the future''.
''I'd like to leave the meeting with, if not a definitive idea of where we're going next year, at least a pretty decent idea, so we can all start planning for next year,'' Humphreys said.
''Because the clock's ticking. I'd like to think that we can come out and say we have a way forward that is better than where we are now.''
The clubs are also expected to express their frustration over the stalled independent commission.
Chief executives are also expected to discuss the racial vilification furore surrounding Andrew Johns and the NSW State of Origin camp.
Mimis, meanwhile, will meet with Luke Patten tonight as the Bulldogs fullback weighs up Super League offers. Mimis has received offers from several clubs, including Huddersfield and Patten is considering ending his career with the Bulldogs a year early.

I'd be shocked to see him play this weekend, and very surprised to see him play against Penrith. It's not Bennett's style to make changes at the drop of a hat, particularly with a team that is in form. I think it's more likely that Gaz will train with the boys for atleast 2 weeks with a game for Shellharbour before he plays firsts.

The guys been training 4 times a week, raring to go, i wouldnt be surprised if Bennett throws him straight in there, problem is could take a little while for him to start producing good football...

Maybe Mark Gasnier is waiting on a ruling regarding extra money for long term players. I think he may have forfeited that right. As I said once before, I would insert a clause that denies him payment for not playing.
In other words..... NO PLAY... NO PAY!!!!!!

Not so much the fitness training I'm talking about, I would've thought Benny would want to be atleast be around the rest of the boys at training for a fortnight or so just to learn some basic plays and get to know the new brigade.

In saying that, I'm sure he has been in regular contact with Bennett about his role etc. I wouldn't complain if he did run out on Friday night. Would be great for the game...for the team though, I'm not so convinced.

I doubt he will play until he has a few weeks of team training, but if he was to run out this week against the Tigers he would feel right at home in the PINK V....

I'm sorry, but Gasnier can go ... take a flying leap. The amount of disruption he has caused this club over the years is ridiculous, not to mention the injuries. First he threatened the club because he wanted to go to rugby union - payrise, then had a change of heart and wanted to go to Wigan - payrise, then he wanted to go to French rugby - 5/8 & payrise, then he left anyway. When he starts getting paid insane money next year, who's going to be missing out? The guys that have put in to get this team to where they are now. He's not worth half of whatever contract he'll demand.

He only looks out for himself and is coming back September-fan style. Sing when you're winning Gaz. This team is MUCH bigger than one player, and MUCH bigger than one player who's line defense is absolutely horrid. Do you really want to see Nightingale be left high and dry in defense each week?

What a load of crap.

Disrupted? The guys don't look too disrupted if you ask me. We have won every game since it was confirmed he will sign for us.

He left because he wasn't getting paid anywhere near what he signed the contract for, as has been mentioned umpteenth times here. You would do the same.

<H1 class="cN-headingPage prepend-5 span-11 last">No more delays: Gasnier to join Dragons within days
GLENN JACKSON

June 27, 2010

MARK GASNIER will sign with St George Illawarra within days after the NRL provisionally approved his contract with the premiership favourites, leading Dragons chief executive Peter Doust to concede the capture of the star convert was ''imminent''.
The protracted talks between Gasnier's manager, George Mimis, Doust and NRL officials effectively ended on Friday, when NRL chief executive David Gallop informed Doust that the contract had been pre-approved. Gasnier is expected to put pen to paper within days. That would leave him available to face Penrith on Monday week.
While Dragons coach Wayne Bennett would be reluctant to throw the 28-year-old - who quit the Dragons in 2008 to play rugby union with Parisian outfit Stade Francais - straight into the NRL again, he is sure to be tempted.
''I'm pleased for the game, first,'' Doust said yesterday. ''I think the game's taken a few hits in recent times, but this is a positive story for the game. It will be great to have one of the key brands in the game of rugby league, and in international sport, in Dragons' colours.''
Gasnier's signing has been held up due to long-winded talks over third-party arrangements for the former Test and Origin player, who signalled his intention to knock back the fledgling Super 15 franchise Melbourne Rebels to return to his former NRL outfit in early May.
Gasnier will be paid a fraction of what he is worth for the rest of this season, but his salary would then be ''commensurate with his ability'' for the remaining two years of his contract. Privately, rival NRL clubs have expressed concern about Gasnier being allowed to sign for the rest of this season with the game's in-form team for a relatively paltry sum - no doubt part of the reason the deal has been a work in progress for so long.
''We've been in discussions for some time,'' Doust said. ''[But] we seem to be in a position to say a conclusion is imminent.
''I haven't actually put a contract in front of them [Gasnier and Mimis], but generally the terms have been discussed.''
Mimis said: ''Peter and I have been in what you could term significant dialogue, and Peter's been in significant dialogue with the NRL. We've had some speed-bumps to overcome, which we have done. It's fair to say it [Gasnier's signing] is imminent.''
Neither would confirm whether Gasnier would be available for selection to face Penrith on July 5, but Mimis hinted the signing could occur within days, saying: ''We've always had a goal to have him signed by June 30. So theoretically, anything's possible.''

this is a HUGE signing for so many reasons. so many positives, but also so many questions if not negatives that have yet to present themselves.

like how long will he stay this time?

will he be as good or better or worse?

how does he/will he fit in now?

will we have the money to sign sum1 like boyd because of this?

excited, yet very cautious.

If signing this lump means we lose quality players like Boyd, Scott etc. then this is a joke.

My philosphy is if it isn't broken then don't fix it. We're on top of the table so why do we need to mess around with the team? Just because his surname is Gasnier?

If we were struggling like the Dogs then I wouldn't be whinging but do we need him now?

Why? because he have the opportunity to re-gain a world class athlete who is proven at NRL, Origin and International level, who happens to be a local junior with ties to an immortal of the game.

As I always say, if Wayne is happy for this to go ahead - that's good enough for me.

Dust off the Gaz banners fellas!

I think with Boyd it will be more the Bennett factor , then gasnier , if Bennett isnt staying around it will be harder for dragons to keep Boyd if Bennett stays then its more likely Boyd will.

Maybe if you see Doust or gaz then you can offer them some advice.

In the mean time let Bennett worry about how they play ;-)

I don't understand the concern on his defence.

Bennett will teach him to slide & trust the defender inside him. It's not like he was weak in defence... More lack of faith in team mates defence.

Where has it been written that we are losing Boyd or Scott to make way for Gasnier?

You use the word 'if' with some liberty. It's posts like yours that start nonsense rumours.
