Until the WA junior teams start making an impact the WA bid can’t be taken seriously. They have not made any upward progress since they joined the NSW junior comps .
Shame we have to wait 12 months. Manly could have sold out nib on the back of the buzz from last weekend if they had stuck to their commitment. Thank frick for Souths (and Warriors!) who have done more to grow interest in NRL in WA than the NRL and rest of clubs out together.
Optus Stadium bonanza could lead to more NRL in Perth
Nick Taylor | The West Australian
Rugby league is set to get a further boost in Perth next year after the success of Saturday’s Optus Stadium double-header.
A bumper crowd of 38,824 saw Melbourne Storm kick off their title defence with a 36-18 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs and the New Zealand Warriors beat South Sydney 32-20.
The Rabbitohs are keen to extend their 10-year relationship with WA and the third game of Manly’s deal with the Warriors, due to have been played this year, has been deferred for 12 months.
Game two of the 2019 State of Origin will be played at Optus Stadium. It is not yet known whether next year’s NRL games will be single events at nib Stadium or double-headers destined for Optus Stadium.
Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said his focus would now switch from the weekend game to the future.
“All our focus was looking to make Saturday as successful as possible. We will now talk with the NRL about next year,” he said.
“Ideally we would like to come back. We will liaise with the NRL to make sure whatever we do works for us and all our fans.
“We will wait to see what everyone’s attitude to the double-header is.
NRLWA chief executive John Sackson said: “West Australians voted with their feet in a convincing demonstration of interest which I am confident will take us one significant step closer to Perth getting its own NRL franchise.
“I would be surprised if future double-header promotions aren’t already being considered, and such a resounding result augurs very well for a sell-out State of Origin in 2019.”

PR do you think that the double header should be left as a 'one-off' and we should return to NIB from next year? I would imagine that the crowd wouldn't be so big next year as the new stadium novelty would have worn off. Should we just focus on trying to fill NIB?
I think the double header was great as a one off novelty event but Id much rather us have three games spread throughout the year at nib. One big event then nothing for over a year does little to help grow interest in the NRL in WA.
I would like to think there could be an ongoing annual RL event at Optus stadium continuing annually from this year.
2019 - Origin
2020 - Double Header or 9's
2021 - Double Header or 9's
2022 - WC Pirates first game
2023 and onwards - WC Pirates season opener or biggest game.
Look at something similar in Adelaide as well until they get a team.
Or even just two and build from there.I think the double header was great as a one off novelty event but Id much rather us have three games spread throughout the year at nib. One big event then nothing for over a year does little to help grow interest in the NRL in WA.

We've varied from 4 to two games to this one event over the last ten years. As it is up to clubs if they decide to come or not we are very much at the whim of club interest rather than any NRL growth strategy sadly. That's why fans here are so appreciative of South's and Warriors. Without them we'd go some years with no games.
So are you saying that we can grow the game in a region with no NRL team just by using other NRL teams to look after that area? Please don't tell Stallion that otherwise his dillusion that the only thing that will fix North Sydney is by putting the Bears back into the NRL will be shattered.
To a certain extent and within a limit. I’d say funding to the nrlwa, a great ceo and committed mob of league devotees on the ground, alongside plenty of imported population from rl playing parts of the world have helped more than the 2 nrl games a year we normally get to grow the game in WA.
Having nrl games definately helps and the amount of media coverage the game gets grows exponentially when we have games here which can only help the codes profile
If he NS Bears can afford to be throwing millions of $'s at the Titans franchise purchase attempt you have to ask why they are not investing that in ensuring the Jnr game in NS remains strong?
Needs to do the rounds on social media, see if they can be shamed in to change.
