I would happily donate more than that, but 1 dollar is a good starting point for the NRL and a great way to encourage people to go to games.

Thoughts on what the punters views are on the $1 donation for each person admitted for rise for Alex round ?
Although a great gesture surely a 22yo paraplegic deserves more from the NRL

It's a full round. A rough (conservative) crowd prediction for this round:

CRO/NQL - 13k
PAR/SOU - 17k
SYD/PEN - 15k
MEL/CAN - 12k
BRI/WAR - 25k
NEW/GLD - 30k
WST/CBY - 30k
SGI/MAN - 12k

I make that 150k or so.

That's 150,000 bucks off the bat, not including the money raised from the wristband sales and other direct donations.

Plus The Footy Show telethon.

I think needlessly criticising any fundraising efforts is naff, personally.

The Daily Telegraph is donating a $1 for every newspaper sold this Saturday to Alex. I think more should go to the young fella from the NRL

Its not like their gonna say "the round only raised $X, you cant have any more. even if you need surgery or something, you can piss off".

This is just a way for the NRL to connect the fundraising to the fan groups that want to help.

They probably dont want to lock themselves into more than is necessary ATM, but its not like this is it...

Agree. They've been helping him since the start and won't stop here.

They have guaranteed him a job for life, I think they've guaranteed the Knights contract he has (they definitely made concessions for the club to honour it, that was in Tinkler time), and reports are that David Smith and his team have been very supportive. The Men Of League organisation would have been around too.

I think the OP has their heart in the right place but has jumped the gun a little bit.

Chuck in the $2 per wrist band they're selling on the NRL website. Surely a heap of those will get sold too

There's donations coming from everywhere. There was a Hunter Valley v Oxley Police game last Wednesday where a 10k cheque was handed to the club. It's most likely one one case of many, probably from sources outside the rugby league world too.

An even more appropriate move would be to spread the money around a bit and send some towards other unfortunate people who have suffered similar injuries.

McKinnon, for all his poor luck will have the backing of a multi-million dollar organisation that will come under media scrutiny to ensure they do the right thing by him.

Others will certainly not be in that position.

Maybe the NRL could take out just TWO percent of what they banked in profit for this year alone and have Alex taken care of for life.

And to be proactive, maybe they take out another fraction of that banked money and invest in top class insurance so anyone disabled by the game never has to worry about money.

What sucks is morons not actually reading the content of the thread and actual facts about this fundraising drive - instead going on the first post and assuming the $1 per patron is the only $$$ being raised.

FMD.

This will, no doubt, be the long term prospect...

Right now, all of the focus and emotion in on the bloke himself, so all the marketing/everything will be based around him and getting him better.

After his condition has totally stabilised, im sure they will expand the idea; a RiseForAlex Foundation that helps a wide group of people suffering through similar situations.

From a totally cynical perspective, this is just a giant PR move (and the ARLC is doing a bloody good job of it!!). They had a kid get paralysed on national television, and theyve turned it into the feel-good sporting story of the decade.

One thing im sure of is that, even after Alex recovers to the point that he doesnt need this kind of assistance, the RiseForAlex brand will be too valuable to let go of; they will probably build it as the big charity of the NRL...
