Hmmm , the SlL experience would suggest otherwise re fans giving up. My biggest concern is just how Independent is the IC going to be with clubs making ridiculous demands and threatening to take home their bat if they don't get their way. Most clubs can't even run themselves (hence why they have the begging bowl out for a $30mill shortfall) imagine the state of the game if they ran it!
But in that situation it wasn't just technicalties. The league and its teams was split in two.

In this situation, it would be the same colours, logos, clubs and players. Same standard of footy. Same 16 teams. Just run by a different mob.

If say tomorrow the 16 clubs have a press release giving the middle finger to the NRL, ARL and News, and announce a new competiton for 2012 headed by an independent commission, with all games split between channels 7/10/other pay tv company. But same rules, same teams, same format. Joe Public won't care. As long as there's 1st grade footy when March rolls around involving everyones favourite team.

Really, you don't think RL fans would care that the clubs were being ultra selfish and killing the Jnr and grass roots game, not to mention losing the rep football? As I said clubs can;t run themselves, no way they could run the game, well maybe run it into the ground!

He's clueless about most things, why should this be any different?

This is our only chance to get away from News Ltd and be truly independent.
News Ltd now risk losing everything and I don't think any supporter would lose any sleep over that. Actually I'd love to see it, it's a massive up yours to News. All News had to do was sign a non compete clause but they wouldn't and now this has come about.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the clubs have demanded an extra 55 per cent in funding from next season - a move the NRL said it could not afford.

If the NRL was properly managed over the last 10 or so years then we would be able to afford it. We've had great TV ratings over a long period of time and should have a lot more money in the bank.

It's a damn shame our game has been run for the benefit of News LTD and not RL.

All 16 clubs agree?

How does this work for the Storm and Broncos?

f**k the Broncos and the Storm. If they want to be NEWS bitches, let them.

Who would they play though, no one not news owned, is ever going to join or support a comp run by NEWS LTD again.

Ive been saying for a few years now if push comes to shove this is what the clubs have to do.

No need to f**k the Broncos and the Storm.

They are in it with the other clubs it seems which is great.

I'm just curious considering their strong links to News Ltd.

Interesting position for them to be in. Maybe it indicates check-mate to the clubs.

The clubs understand that they have all the power at this late stage, and considering the deliberate stalling from News earlier on in the process and the way they have continually screwed the game over and over again they have every right to stick it to the F**king f**kers.

I hate the properganda article by the Telegraph, moaning about the poor fans. THE POOR FANS WANT YOU TO FK OFF AND DIE NEWS SCUM.

Pay the clubs more (you have had an undervalued deal for years now, so its not a big issue), sign the non compete clause and fk off.

Rugby league's independent commission could collapse and a breakaway competition form as the NRL's clubs threaten rebellion, according to reports on Wednesday.
Clubs have demanded their annual grants be increased from $3.65 million to $6 million next season before they sign a licensing agreement with the NRL for the 2012 season.
That claim would represent an injection of more than $34 million, but the reports say the NRL has only $18 million in cash reserves.
The independent commission was expected to finally take control of the game on November 1.
Delays to its start-up have angered the clubs, who are eager for negotiations on a rich new broadcast deal to be accelerated.
The reports said the cash grab from clubs could cripple the commission, while clubs could even consider starting their own breakaway league if News Ltd and the Australian Rugby League don't accept their demands.
South Sydney chairman Nick Pappas, who has represented the clubs in negotiations over the commission, outlined their concerns in an email sent to News and the ARL on Tuesday.
"The clubs, as one, embrace the concept of 'good faith' in all their dealings with the NRL, and they are content to allow this over-riding principle to govern the anticipated increased level of funding for them from the 2013 year, when renegotiated media revenues will permit a significantly greater level of appropriation," Pappas wrote.
"However, the clubs are not content to defer a revised funding arrangement until that time, and seek a commitment now from the competition organiser that will take effect from the 2012 playing season and will be enshrined within the new contractual arrangements commencing on November 1, 2011."

f**k the clubs getting to run the show. We'll get the NRL and SOO and they'll wittle down International league slowly until there is nothing.

If it's just posturing then good on them.

The clubs "doing a super league" to the architects of super league. Love it!

In reality though I can't see how it would work. Where would the money come from? But at the least it is the clubs flexing some muscle against the arrogant News Ltd. Good stuff.

Potential damage to the international game, just as it's starting to gain some credibility, is definitely a concern. Hopefully player power and fan demand would see this avoided though.

Well, if the clubs ditched the NRL and the ARL/News partnership collapses, I can see the Clubs picking the eyes out of the ARL/State leagues.

The ARL and international football would survive a club break away, as would origin. The only issues I see are the intellectual property rights of the clubs belonging to the NRL, and News will be out in the cold, unhappy.

The big issue is financial backing - the clubs would need TV companies backing them.

We aren't being paid what we deserve, and the clubs are right to make some demands of News in their exit. Remember, News have stalled and played hard ball during this commission process to get what they want.

Oh, and all the people looking to point the finger at the 'greedy clubs', put the TV rights into context in 2011 Finals and Origin ratings:

1 NRL Origin 3 (3,736,000)
2 NRL Origin 1 (3,478,000)
3 AFL Grand Final (3,418,000)
4 NRL Origin 2 (3,381,000)
5 NRL Grand Final (3,255,000)
6 NRL Storm V Warriors (1,807,000)
7 NRL Manly V Broncos (1,668,000)
8 NRL Dragons V Wests Tigers (1,607,000)
9 AFL Colling V Hawthorn (1,571,000)
10 NRL Broncos V Dragons (1,548,000)
11 NRL Tigers V Warriors (1,382,000)
12 NRL Broncos V Warriors (1,368,000)
13 AFL Hawth V Geelong (1,317,000)
14 AFL Hawth V Sydney (1,310,000)
15 AFL Geelong V West C (1,269,000)
16 NRL Melb V Newc (1,236,000)
17 AFL Carlt V West C (1,217,000)
18 NRL Manly V Cowboys (1,201,000)
19 AFL Carlt V Ess (1,126,000)
20 AFL Coll V West C (1,046,000)
21 AFL St Kilda V Syd (1,045,000)

AFL got $1150M and $780M for their last two deals, each over 5 years

The NRL got $500M over 6.

News can go F**K themselves.

News Ltd being "held to ransom".

Methinks the Astonisher's propaganda is going to make this worth it.
