Seriously, if the supposedly 'independent' commission can't fork out an extra $34m a year, when the TV rights will smash the previous one, then god help everyone.

This is nothing else but a clear example of just how pathetic News Limited is - and highlights all too well just what a crock of shit the News Ltd appointed commission (led by one D.Gallop) is.

Its a lame duck.

The real independent commission should be run by the clubs, for the clubs - devoid of any News Ltd influence.

When the IC was 1st announced there was an article in the Telecrap with pictures of the board members to be phased out with the streamlined operations. About 30m was to be saved.

There's the money for the clubs add the increased TV deal it's fine. Doing it this way the club won't get shafted with the next deal. The IC will make sure it gets enough to cover it & keep enough in the coffers.

We aren't being paid what we deserve, and the clubs are right to make some demands of News in their exit. Remember, News have stalled and played hard ball during this commission process to get what they want.

Oh, and all the people looking to point the finger at the 'greedy clubs', put the TV rights into context in 2011 Finals and Origin ratings:

1 NRL Origin 3 (3,736,000)
2 NRL Origin 1 (3,478,000)
3 AFL Grand Final (3,418,000)
4 NRL Origin 2 (3,381,000)
5 NRL Grand Final (3,255,000)
6 NRL Storm V Warriors (1,807,000)
7 NRL Manly V Broncos (1,668,000)
8 NRL Dragons V Wests Tigers (1,607,000)
9 AFL Colling V Hawthorn (1,571,000)
10 NRL Broncos V Dragons (1,548,000)
11 NRL Tigers V Warriors (1,382,000)
12 NRL Broncos V Warriors (1,368,000)
13 AFL Hawth V Geelong (1,317,000)
14 AFL Hawth V Sydney (1,310,000)
15 AFL Geelong V West C (1,269,000)
16 NRL Melb V Newc (1,236,000)
17 AFL Carlt V West C (1,217,000)
18 NRL Manly V Cowboys (1,201,000)
19 AFL Carlt V Ess (1,126,000)
20 AFL Coll V West C (1,046,000)
21 AFL St Kilda V Syd (1,045,000)

AFL got $1150M and $780M for their last two deals, each over 5 years

The NRL got $500M over 6.

News can go F**K themselves.

Why demand money the game hasn't got? Also presumably the clubs would need to sign some sort of agreement for the IC to come into being, seems a very bizarre move by the clubs to me.

Could the clubs actually break away and form their own comp? I doubt it, would be the end of rep football for starters, would cause massive damage to grass roots and would the fans stand for another SuperLeague move even if it was club initiated, I doubt it. They are playing a very dangerous game. At the end of the day News could withdraw from the IC and the game would be well and truly stuffed for another 7 years.

I am sure the clubs would stand for it to be back paid starting 2013. This way stops them from being shafted at the table. When News pisses off we will have it no problems.

SL had a rep comp. No reason to think this would be any different. They want money they need SOO and Tests. As a fan I couldn't care less what the comp is called. What if the IC wants to change the name? Will fans drop off I doubt that It's was NSWRL then ARL and not many fell off.

If I can watch Penrith play every week. Lol@souffs and hate Manly like now (something SL didn't have). Be amazed at the players then it doesn't matter to me. Most fans are the same. The clubs know this

This would be the death of any expansion of the league ever, if the clubs are in charge.
Correct. But no one cares about anything outside the current 16 clubs. If people think News Ltd has a greedy, selfish agenda wait till the clubs get hold of all the power.

Really, you don't think RL fans would care that the clubs were being ultra selfish and killing the Jnr and grass roots game, not to mention losing the rep football? As I said clubs can;t run themselves, no way they could run the game, well maybe run it into the ground!

why would that happen ?

seriously
you think the clubs would close State of Origin down ?
what utter nonsense

I don't think the clubs are looking to run the game.

they want control of the game removed from News Ltd & suspect a rat in the present dealings

this is their way of forcing the hand of everyone to get this IC done.
that is all.

If news call their bluff
we'll have a new comp in 2012.... & this won't be a war like 1997
because all 16 clubs are in agreement this time
they are united as will their fans be behind them

they are standing up for themselves yes ... but in effect are standing up for the game too
I applaud them for it.

they have a right to have a very big say in proceedings , without the clubs ... we don't have an NRL
they are the reason we'll get a massive TV deal .... they should get a large portion of it so they can continue to keep the games stars playing our game ... & develop new ones

anyone who thinks the clubs will run the game into the ground
is .... well ... an idiot.

So when SL signed up the pacific islands did that benefit them? They still can't afford to send teams to the north. Still can't play regular games. So please enlighten me as to how News helps internationals now? Thing won't get worse but they may improve when News buggers off!

Agree. Well said. The clubs are just reminding these arrogant turds, who have cruelled the game for the last 10 years I might add, who has the ultimate power. Without the clubs you don't have a comp. without a comp you don't have a TV deal etc. The clubs want News Ltd out on terms that suits the game not News, as we all should.

Yes, because the clubs have no interest in the game's health and growth... as opposed to a news corporation which has consistently taken advantage of the game's ratings, while underpaying it. :sarcasm:

Without clubs there is no NRL ... obviously,

however, without Rugby League there are no clubs and the clubs are not bigger than the game.

In essence, the issue is not about the money, it's about whether the IC is exactly that "independent" or a patsy for the clubs.

If it's the second then the clubs can bugger off. I would rather support QCup and NSWCup than any of those self-centered mongrels ... including my own if they're in it.

Time for the NRL to get tough and set a criteria.. where they'll give the grants, IF and only IF you can pass certain criteria elements first. Crowds are crap? Aren't growing your junior bases? Aren't doing enough to promote the game? Can't meet a reserve? Bad luck, you're out. Area's who have poured millions into their grassroots without proper NRL representation shouldn't be held back because of a few clubs which are in dire straights in one way or the other. Time to cleanse the weak from the strong.
