Clarifying the Axemen stance on National Team Selection

March 13th, 2011
From the Jacksonville Axemen Media

The Axemen would firstly like to congratulate Apple Pope who has retained his Captaincy of the USA National Rugby League team.

We would also like to explain and clarify our stance about the recent “eligibly statement” that was released by the American National Rugby League (AMNRL) and appears to exclude any athletes who play for the Jacksonville Axemen, or other United Stated Rugby League Teams (USARL), from being selected for the USA National Rugby League Team. (A copy of the statement is at the bottom of this release)

And one other player of note is big second rower Salesi Tongamoa. From New York, Tongamoa has played for the New York Knights and New Haven Warriors in the American National Rugby League and is now based in Atlanta.

Atlanta? who does he play for? or is he currently a non-RL player like the Hawaiians?

Donnybrook Cup Press Conference

March 19th, 2011
By Daniel Andruczyk, at Press Conference, Paddy Whack’s Bar, Philadelphia PA, USA.

Friday afternoon saw the official Press Conference of the Donnybrook Cup held at one of the events official sponsors and events venues, Paddy Whacks. The USA Tomahawks are taking on the Ireland Wolfhounds to round out the week’s St Patricks Day celebrations. Three members from each of the two teams were present to answer questions: the USA had David Niu (President and Coach), Apple Pope (Capt.) and Jack Breen (Assistant Coach and Team Manager) and Ireland had Gordon Matthews (Chairman RLI), Alan Robinson (Coach) and Brendan Guilfoyle (Capt.). Proceedings opened with introductions from the team members and then questions opened up with myself throwing an open questions to both teams. I asked about what both teams are looking to take out of this match and how all this fits into their preparations with the Home Nations later in the year (Ireland) and World Cup qualifiers (USA).

By Daniel Andruczyk, in Philadelphia

USA Tomahawks 08-26 Ireland Wolfhounds

This afternoon the USA and Ireland resumed their traditional clashes. The Donnybrook Cup is the latest installment in a long tradition of matches between these two nations and as the two nations promised in yesterdays press conference there were some big tackles. There was a strong wind going from North to south and the USA kicked off to the Irish who were running with the wind.

Donnybrook Cup Interviews

March 21st, 2011
By Daniel Andruczyk

After the Donnybrook Cup was completed I was able to get a few words from Brendan Guilfoyle the Captain of the Irish Wolfhounds Team, David Niu the Coach of the USA Tomahawks and Neil Wood the RFL’s director of European development. While I was talking with Neil I took the opportunity to ask him about some of the recent developments in Europe with the split in Italy and Russia and got some very candid answers. So here are the transcripts. Enjoy!

Peace in the USA, IRLF Copa Italia and Russian News

March 23rd, 2011
By Daniel Andruczyk

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? It may well be. After the weekends Donnybrook Cup, which was a successful day for the AMNRL (though there was no way 2500 people there), however not so for the Tomahawks, a meeting between the waring parties of the AMNRL and USARL had been called. Below a press release of the statement. Also some news from the Italian Copa Italia, with a interview with Nick Zisti and the quarter final wrap. The semis and finals will be done tomorrow when some more results from Lebanon come in. Two new clubs join, or should I say rejoin the Russian Rugby League too.

Press Release – Italia Cup success delivered by Italia RFL

March 30th, 2011
From Italia RLF media

The 2011 Italian Cup of Rugby League has a holder: Burton Etruschi Perugia!!!

On Sunday, March 20 2011 was held under the patronage of the VIII City Hall and the District Committee of Borghesiana, the first Coppa Italia finals branded by the Italia RFL. Rugby League returned to carve out a space in winter after 50 years since the last gasps of FIAG 13. It’s an experiment, mind you, the first date that we hope to renew for the next year of activity. One way to raise awareness of this code and introduce to the Italian sports and athletes.
