I don't agree with either of these statements.

If, IF, what Druzik was told was true - that there are close to fifty teams in SA - then I, for one, think that's a pretty good foundation for the sport in that country. And given that feedback from the Canada game suggests their players are not novices and they have experience of playing RL, that says to me that plenty are taking it seriously.

If there are fifty teams then that possibly makes them the sixth largest RL playing nation after Australia, England, New Zealand, PNG and France. After those five (and SA) you'd struggle to name one country with more than a couple of dozen teams. Can RL really afford to ignore SA.

I'd also dispute your claim about Afrikaaners' continuing malevolent influence in the wider SA community. Yes, there must still be pockets of resistance to RL, but it will be diminishing, and anyway, the political landscape has changed totally. For every stuck-in-the past Africaaner trying to promote his own discredited ideas there's a dozen who'll oppose him. If some want to crush RL, there'll be those who oppose and support. The Boers are no longer the power in the land.

The simple fact that nearly fifty teams find pitches, sponsors and, presumably, some local media coverage, indicates that things are far removed from the dark days of Craven and his cohorts.

As for the Afrikaaners being anti-RL, take a look at the names in the current Rhinos squad.
I agree with you 100% you just need to take a look at the South African squad and you won't see any Australian/NZ or English expats on the team. They may have gone by quietly developing rugby league but that does not mean they aren't serious and I'm sure some of there lads have been playing rugby union for most of their lives so would have the basic skills required to play rugby league. The way forward for them in the next few years would be to send some of their more developed players to the UK/France or Australia to further develop their skills.

I will be extremely happy if I am proven wrong about Rugby League in South Africa

To be fair, from the pictures I've seen most of the League players appear to be white. You'd think that if they truly wanted to outgrow Union then they'd try to create a middle ground between Union and Soccer where both the black and white communities of SA can comfortably play the same sport together without any shadows being cast from historical race divides.

But then again, I've only seen a few photos. Only a local could tell us if that's really the case.

FFS! South Africa's soccer team is pretty much black, black, black. Does that make them racist?

Most of the players were still in nappies when the Afrikaaners conceded power twenty years ago. For the most part society has moved on. I seriously doubt there's racism involved. And if there is racism in SA RL, why would the black players in the Rhinos squad want to be there?

It could simply be that without the funds to develop the game to new areas that SA RL recruits from those already playing rugby. Or maybe blacks don't play rugby because their culture/community is soccer orientated. There are very few Asians playing RL in the north of England despite there being a large Asian population in many of the towns and cities, and despite clubs like Bradford Bulls striving hard to take the game to those communities.

I help run a club in Inner City London in an area where whites are the minority yet some Saturday afternoons almost all our thirty-four players are white, yet we're a completely open and inclusive club.

Not saying it's racist I'm just saying it's the sort of thing that just falls back into the old patterns. And the old patterns see one group watching and supporting their own game and the other group supporting and watching their other game. If League could somehow straddle that divide the game could benefit from support from both sides of the fence, and the job would be half as hard. And twice as successful.

I'm not sure about there being fifty teams in SA 16. From what I believe it's a number of teams that then have a rep side so a number of the aforementioned teams aren't playing with new players or as part of the base domestic league set up. They are utilising players who already have a club side. It's like saying Australian RL has 18 teams if you include QL and NSW.

If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle.....but that's not gonna happen either. I refer you to the farce that has been Celtic Crusaders/Crusaders in the ESL......if Wales get to the final of this RWC then you may as well forget League taking over for 7 hundred years, let alone 7
Regardless of what you think from thousands of miles away, the Crusaders 'farce' did a massive amount for the game here despite minimal finance and only being around for a couple of years. I don't really understand why you brought that up at all, the reason it failed was because the owners screwed the club on 2 occasions, it wasn't anything to do with RL.

He's a troll so don't worry about it.

They also screwed over the local soccer team for years too and nearly killed it.

Question: let's say South Africa were to step up against Jamaica how much would they need to win by to get through to the World Cup? OK heres a prediction South Africa beat Jamaica by 50 then they would have to hope that the USA-Jamaica game is low scoring (6-0?) and need Jamaica to win? If South Africa are not involved in the WC then we need to take them seriously and bring decent international teams over such as Serbia, Scotland and Ireland (local players), Germany, Russia etc.. or getting them high profile matches and allowing them to use a full strength squad PNG vs South Africa (with their 11 overseas based players who are believed to be from the NRL or SL).

Fair question, but sorry to rain on your parade. Based on what we saw Saturday, South Africa doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of beating Jamaica. Honestly, it was a bit painful to watch them collapse against the USA. If they play the same on Wed, Jamaica should handle them fairly easily. USA v Jamaica should be a good match. Larry from Rhode Island Rebellion is going to the SA v Jamaica match and should be tweeting during the match. Sunday, I'll be tweeting @dcslayers if you want to follow along.

Wayne Allen Scores a Double for Jamaica in WCQ

October 20th, 2011
By Daniel Andruczyk, at Campbell’s Field, Camden New Jersey, USA, 19/10/11

Today saw some dour condition in Camden, New Jersey, for the second of the Atlantic Zone Qualifiers. A Jamaican team, bristling with overseas stars, had to overcome some atrocious conditions in Camden New Jersey to beat the South African Rhinos in their opening match of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers. The Rain meant that the speed advantage that Jamaica would have had would be largely negated and thus would have to slug it out with the Rhinos who have shown in their last two outings that they certainly can match it physically.
