RLWC2017 Crowd Watch

I emailed every NRL club before the world cup here in 2008 and pointed out the benefits to Rugby League and the clubs themselves the world cup can bring and there did seem total apathy by a majority of clubs

I saw very little promoting of the WC in Central Auckland though klf. Just a few banners around Quay St and a few near the airport. Wasn't the idea behind getting states and councils (?) to bid for the games was that then meant it was in their own interests to promote the games they were hosting?

WA's hosting a city centre celebration before our double header:

The Rugby League World Cup 2017 (RLWC2017) will be the biggest sporting event in the region this year. The City of Perth is proud to announce they are hosting the official ‘Rugby League World Cup 2017 Welcome’ in Forrest Place in celebration.

The Rugby League World Cup will be held from 27 October to 2 December 2017, with Perth hosting a double-header game on Sunday 12 November 2017 at NIB Stadium. The double-header features Wales v Ireland and England v France.
Come down from 4:00pm to get your face painted in your team colours, participate in rugby drills and activities, catch the Nova Casanovas for spot prizes, or grab a snap with a three meter inflatable kangaroo.

Pre-entertainment will be featured on the main stage from 6:00pm. This will include an act representing each of the four nations: Brittan, France, Ireland and Wales.

Official proceedings will commence from 6:30pm with guest speakers, and a welcome to the teams and player Q&A. (A list of players and coaches attending is not available currently, and may released closer to the date.) Signings and a meet and greet will commence after the official proceedings at 7:00pm.
A Sausage Sizzle will be held on site fundraising for Alkimos Rugby League Club.

Successful? They are in track for the lowest average crowd attendance since 2000. On our morning news in NZ they are taking the piss out of the competition and the eligibility. I would hate to see what you classify as an unsuccessful tournament.

The only positive they stated was the PNG game.

I understand what you are saying about crowds but this is the most competitive world cup ever and will still probably finish up being the most profitable. The organisers banked around $20 million before a ball had been kicked because of TV rights, state Governments of Australia bidding for games and the PNG Government paying $5 million for their pool games.

Enjoy the tournament - it is going to be a cracker and I'm sure there will be a few twists in the onfield plot yet.

I predict 3500 for Italy v Fiji and 13k for Australia v France.

Spoke to more rugby league fans in Canberra today who are just realising games are on in Canberra. They aren’t interested though.

And still with minimal advertising it got 17,857 which is:

Biggest crowd to ever watch Kiwis vs Samoa (previous 16,912 in 2014 Four Nations),
Biggest crowd ever in NZ for the Kiwis against a Pacific team,
Bigger crowd than the Four Nations match for the Kiwis vs England in Dunedin (15,863)
Biggest crowd for a game of Rugby League in NZ for 2017...so far

But what could if have been with some real promotion? 20,000+ easily. Do you see a future in annual NZ v Samoa matches? Are they potential profit makers?

3,500 tickets left for the PNG vs Ireland game....not bad considering a few hours ago it was over 5,000 tickets left for sale.

Hard to tell how many tickets have gone for the Kiwis vs Scotland and Samoa vs Tonga game based on how they open and close the stands for sale.

I don't know why they don't have a Pacific Cup in NZ instead of the Kiwis travelling to England for hidings every year. The only issue would be if all these pacific players would actually commit to their nations in the future.

The Kiwis past crowds against Pacific teams in NZ:
2017 vs Samoa 17,857
2014 vs Samoa 16,912
2010 vs PNG 6,000
2010 vs Samoa 11,512
2009 vs Tonga 8,000
2008 vs Tonga 5,000

Member Cards
All Platinum Cards, Gold Member Cards, Gold Guest Cards and both Club Cards (both Red and Blue) admit to this fixture.

This is for both England v Lebanon & Australia v Lebanon, which should add some extra numbers to the crowd. As they are allowing Guest Cards, Red & Blue cards, technically some Gold Members can bring up to 3 guests with them. This means there are roughly 30K+ people who could attend for free.

Now I'm pretty sure the Members area has a capacity of around 8K... Surely England v Lebanon will draw close to 4K members and Australia v Lebanon around 6K...

SCG members only show up to Union games

I’m a member of SCG and I’m going sat night for England v Lebanon and the Australia game at alliance.. A large turnout of members could turn this crowd into a decent number. If 5k members can show up.

I'll bet if there were an annual pacific cup the players would commit. Look at the world cup, when there is a tournament on that actually matters they fall over themselves to represent the islands. I honestly think (and this is a big call) that if the Island nations play at full strength in an annual Pacific Cup and the usual passion is on display it could rival State of Origin for interest - it would probably run second commercially but it certainly gives the game another vehicle and would certainly draw the attention of the media to the international game and give the Pacific players a reason to commit fully to their nation and would generate revenue which would allow the Pacific nations to pay their players.
