That was because Australia wanted their ridiculous year-off. This time Australia will have the year off in 2018 so there is no reason not to play in 2019.

There's a fair chance you didn't know there was any game on there this weekend. Let alone a world cup quarterfinal.

And who could blame you. After all, New Zealand against Fiji is hardly one of international rugby league's more fabled rivalries. The two teams have never actually met before, which says a bit about the code, this event and Fiji's former place in it."

Ive been in Chch for the past week..,

The good:
- Lots of RLWC banners around, airport, CBD & the streets around the stadium.
- Weather has been perfect and will continue into the weekend.
- Lots of unexpected Tongan support. The videos from the team arrival and meet and greet are unreal. I've been "Tonga'd" (drive by-ed by Tongan fans hollering and waving flags) everytime i've left the house!

The Bad:
- Not a lot of press.
- It's show week in Christchurch this week. Friday is a public holiday so lots of people are getting out of town, the A&P show is on over the weekend and NZ cup horse racing is on Saturday. Not great timing.

I wonder how much is 'fewer than 10,000' really is? If it gets above 10,000 i would be stoked!

Sadly I'm not going now even though we are in Wellys that day it would be too late for the kids by the time we would get home after the game. :(

At the moment if every game got above 10K I'd be reasonably happy. All of the matches deserve so much more and frankly are capable of so much more.

Fully agree. Blame the high ticket prices as the main reason for below expected attendances.

It's sad when journalists use their position to project their insecurities. We get it, you don't want the RLWC to succeed, too bad.

Also, why do both league and union like playing at Westpac so much? Surely in a country where union is the national sport they could have found a nice rectangular stadium? A stadium like Forsyth Barr would have been perfect. Westpac is probably the worst rugby league ground in New Zealand.

I just wonder why he bothers writting an article on the RLWC if he has such distain for it and maybe the game in general. Is it to sink the boot in? Is it because his boss handed him the assignment that he didn't want and had a sulk about it?

I've often wondered this too about Westpac - is it actually a cricket ground? Maybe that's why it's an oval and just happens to be one of the biggest stadiums in the country which means the other codes use if for their bigger matches - I don't know, I'm just assuming.

I think we all would be stoked if it was close to 10,000 or even 9,000 or 8,000 this far out...

Looking at the Map, in Cat C, 19U - 21U are now sold out, plus 20C - 22C and 33C. 19C and 21U are close enough (handful of tickets left), same with 33U & 34C up the other end. Currently 34U is the only Cat C Bay with more than a handful of seats.

In the Cat B's, 23U, 23C are around 90% capacity, 31C & 31U are around 60% and 32U is pretty sparse. In Cat A's, we've sold out of 27U, 27C is about 60% full, and then the bays surrounding have about 30% sold... the rest is a bit of 'find the crowd'....

I'd say we're at around 4K currently...

Christchurch is equally as worrying I feel. Little movement on the Eastern side, with decent sell through directly behind the goal posts.

It's scary when the crowd the Women's World Cup is drawing at 2pm on a Thursday outside of school holidays could look better than these QFs....
