Chatting to some English fans in Southbank last night and they had been to nz for the tonga semi. They said it was by far the best atmosphere and rugby league game they’d ever seen. If a major outcome like that can’t get media interest going nothing will. Anyway back to who is being picked for origin.............

The media apathy is primarily in response to the ease with which the Kangaroos cruised to the final. I imagine if they actually had to fight to get there people, the media included, would be a lot more interested in the international game. It all boils down to competitivty at the end of the day.

England were not far off the Aussies in the last game. A few dubious calls against England stopped Englands progress to 10all. The football has been good. The prices have not!

The media have decided it isn't worthy of coverage. Frankly they are wrong. They should worry about what interests their audience and not what their personal views are. 2.3 million people watched Australia's semi. That is real interest. It is a bigger audience than any other national football team in 2017.
DT are owned by Rupert who also owns F*x who didn't get the rights and are ignoring it as a result.

Not that I would ever purchase the scummy telegraph, but reading it at the airport on the way to brissy. There is heaps of rugby league in the sports pages, pages of it. Unfortunately the World Cup final is a couple of paragraphs at the bottom of one of these pages. The rest is nrl and origin. F*ck this sport.
It's not the sport that's the problem hutch.

ABC TV News from Sydney had no mention of the rugby league world cup in its main bulletin tonight! Disgracefully poor coverage from the national tv service. Im certain other codes like union or soccer would have got a mention had it been a world cup for them!

Absolutely certain the other codes I mentioned would've been featured on their sports report if it were their world cup final! Rugby league is clearly not being treated fairly or even reasonably by many in the media. A world cup final should take precedence over a local domestic signing or at least rate an equal mention?

Yes the Mitchell Pearce sideshow took all the wind out of the World Cup stories early in the week and then the Hayne pain took all the Rugby League stories tonight. Channel nine led into their sports bulletin with the Hayne segment..

I wish 7 had I sold some rights to fox cos apart from channel 7 there is no one talking about World Cup.. I’m starting to think it would have been better if 9 had won the hosting rights.

What gives me more concern is that other codes like union and soccer would have world cup news on such news bulletins without the network covering that particular tournament. This is where rugby league is being unfairly treated.

I cannot believe the lack of coverage of this final. The NSW Cup final gets better coverage. Something is seriously wrong here. An Aus v Eng final (first since 95) should be a promoters' dream.

Absolutely agree. Their is something seriously amiss. We have basically a total media blackout concerning the world cup finals except for Channel 7!

I listen to BBC radio five live quite a lot and the coverage has been decent over the past few weeks. Dave Woods being a RL correspondent has definitely helped. Was annoyed tonight though as around 7pm the presenter said from 9pm to 10pm they were going over to Australia for the big game tomorrow....I turn on at 9, bloody cricket. Christ sake. Straight off.

On the lack of Aussie publicity for the event, Kevin Sinfield speaking from Australia was on last night and basically said you wouldn't know there was a RLWC going on there. Quite amazing hearing that from the place where the sport has its highest profile.

Very underwhelming! I articulated that rugby league has little support in the top end of town and the influential media people are part of that.

What about the high profile given to NRL though? Surely the sport has support but the RLWC doesn't. Been watching the odd snippet from Australia and the pundits there are very dismissive of the opposition.

Its basically a policy of containment. " Lets cover the NRL as it keeps the code insular not international." More or less keeping rugby league in its place and giving the chance to be internationally relevant.

They don't rate the opposition though Stallion. One Aussie pundit was asked what chance do England have, he said minimal, adding that if they were to stand any chance the Burgess brothers, Widdop, Graham and all the NRL based English players have to step up. Not one Super League player mentioned, and he mentioned the two Burgess brothers despite the fact one isn't starting.

Don't rate the opposition and the NRL is the be all and end all. The RLWC is treated as a third tier tournament by Aussies behind State of Origin and NRL.
