RLWC2017 Media Watch

Ha! In their top five or whatever it is they had soccer, tennis, basketball. No RLWC. In their RL segment they talked about Jarryd Hayne going to Parramatta (or not). Didn't even mention he fact he's playing for Fiji today (or at all). They had Mal commenting on it but no mention of the France game or anything else on the Roos. They had that bloke who wants to play women's VFL because he's on sixty monutes, cross-promoted the Ashes for a fair while and has the horse racing. They even chose to show old footage of Kyrgios in some sort of looking back at 2017 segment rather than talk about something that's actually on this weekend.
makes me detest Nein even more than ever … but looking on the bright side, mate Nein management has seen the great TV ratings and so don't want to publicise it (and help Ch 7) even more!!!

The Offsiders commenting on international rugby league - value = slightly less than the turd I just dropped.

RL was not mentioned on the Offsiders at all today- they exclusively had a preview of the Melb Cup...

My earlier comment was from the morning news show around 8.30...

At least my tax dollars don't fund Nein... the public broadcaster shouldn't have a bias against one of the most popular sports in the country...

ABC news this morning.

PNG Ireland? No
Any of the results at all? No
Maybe something about the Roos at least? No

Three Scotland players sent home after an "incident". Didn't even say what the incident was so it made it sound mysteriously bad, rather than just being pissed.

I can understand (but not excuse) private media for bias against certain sports, groups etc but the national, Government run broadcaster should be supporting a home world cup of which many state governments are helping to fund and which our 100+ year old national team is favourite to win.

Just disgusting

Serves you right for watching that dross.

Just to get an idea of why some of us are convinced there is a real media agenda against League, these two stories are side by side in Grandstand's Facebook feed. The quotes are the Facebook comments/bylines by Grandstand:

Union:

The Blossoms were certainly brave, but the Wallabies enjoyed a high-scoring win on Japanese soil.

League:

Another close* result in the Rugby League World Cup as New Zealand edges** Scotland 74-6.

*blow-out
**thumps

Look journalists are fans (or pretend to be for money) of whatever code they like. If it was as easy as ignoring AFL/union/tiddlywinks articles because I'm not a fan, and vice-versa, then we'd all be much better off.

But I cannot escape the fact that league, and to some extent soccer, gets treated completely differently in all forms of media than the other codes. Players are held to higher standards and are pilloried to a much more sensationalised degree. Equal time is not given to talking about the on-field action. Even dedicated programs like NRL360 spend at least half the time trashing the code. This is leaving aside all the negativity we ourselves generate whinging about refereeing or eligibility criteria etc.

It all adds up to a self-sustaining frame or lens through which RL is viewed by everyone, including (critically) the casual sports fan. I don't even need to suggest there's an anti-RL media agenda for the facts to still be true.

By all means report the misdemeanours of RL personalities but only do it fairly and I'll shut up.

Club footy aint going anywhere, but the rep game is where RLs growth is....
After Penrith won the 03GF. My interest in RL surged a fair bit (I'm from Melbourne). Following that, Aus/GB played a 3 match series which I thought was unreal, despite Aus winning 3-0. The following years tried series was also great, despite the anti climactic final. After that international RL, from my pov, seemed to drop off a bit. So my interest wanes.

What I'm saying is. While I was excited that Penrith won, and the 03GF was a great game, that pretty much still carries my interest in RL to even now. Where was a point where international RL really got me going. To the point where it easily could've ignited a greater passion for RL within me and even subject the NRL to second place.

It's actually disappointing for me that in RL, at least one of the big 3 always seem to lose their priority.

It's a shame there wasn't more confusion. Wannabes fans and assorted try-hards would have shown up in their thousands. Sure no RL supporters would have gone, but they didn't anyway.
