Heard a whisper last night that Asquith Sydney Shield could be pulling the pin this week after there massive loss on the weekend.

Anyone aware of what the punishment may be? a fine? just curious. Did Kingsgrove pull out of Shield early one season?

Looks like your source was correct. Despite naming a side on Tuesday, Asquith have now forfeited this weeks' game, and this must surely be an intermediate step to withdrawal from the competition.

The St Marys Saints sounded a warning to the Ron Massey Cup competition with a dominating 50-nil shut out of the Windsor Wolves in the ‘battle of the Blue Mountains’ at Windsor Sports Complex last Saturday Night.

In one of the most complete displays seen in the Massey Cup this season, the Saints ran in nine unanswered tries to move up to sixth place on the competition table.

Again class half Adrian Davis was close to the best player on the park as he had a hand in three of St Marys’ first four tries, plus landing seven goals from nine attempts with the boot.

After second rower Joe Vaegaau opened the scoring in the 10th minute following a 50 metre kick return from giant winger Luke Nadurutalo, a superb Davis pass sent flying centre Ray Lesoa away on a 50 metre dash for his first try in the 19th minute for a 12-nil lead.

Then Davis stood in a tackle in another attacking raid to send Vaegaau over for his second try in the 25th minute to give the visitors an 18-nil half time lead.

A Davis clearing kick at the end of the first set of the second half was then allowed to bounce in goal by Wolves winger Zac Mackay – giving his opposite number Chris Aunese-Scanlan the opportunity to pounce and duly score to extend the lead to 22-nil.

Then came the most commanding display of possession seen this season as the hapless Wolves could only muster one set of six tackles in possession for the first 25 minutes of the second half as the Saints ‘applied the screws’.

With such a welter of possession and field position, St Marys were ruthless. Nadurutalo finished off a movement in the corner before he turned provider with a miracle pass in a tackle send Alan Eisenhuth over to extend the lead to 32-nil.

Centre Tom Eisenhuth extended the lead in the 55th minute to 38-nil with Davis’ conversion, before Lesoa got his second try at the end of another sweeping movement wide out for 44-nil with Davis’ conversion with 20 minutes left.

The Wolves finally got their hands on some football to at least slow the scoring in the last quarter of the game.

St Marys put the exclamation mark on their win when Aunese-Scanlan posted his second try to finish another Davis inspired move with the last play of the night. Davis converted after the full time siren to bring up the Saints’ half century.

Competition leaders Wentworthville responded to St Marys’ statement with their own command performance as they shut out Concord-Burwood 46-nil at Goddard Park last Sunday.

Taking advantage of the undermanned Wolves outfit, the Magpies got the upper hand after a grinding start to lead 20-nil at half time in scoring the first four of their nine tries.

As Jake Butler-Fleming and David Sisifa completed their doubles in the second half, ‘Wenty’ went right on with the job in the closing stages to complete the second shut out performance of the Ron Massey Cup round.

Western Suburbs joined ‘Wenty’at the top of the table in Sunday’s other game when they just outlasted Hills District Bulls 32-26 in an entertaining contest.

Both teams went ‘try for try’ in the first half after a tight start. Jay Bonnell opened the scoring for Wests in the 11th minute from a Dayne Craig break before Hills centre Ben Vengoa was sin binned by referee Jeff Hartup for dissent.

The Bulls levelled the scores despite being one man short when Lionel O’Malley burrowed over from close range before Magpies winger Tom Capper took a Brendan Waters bomb to regain the lead just as Vengoa was returning from the sin bin.

The Bulls levelled the scores at 10-all just before the break when O’Malley scored his second try after a questionable knock on ruling against Wests in possession gave the home side attacking position.

Wests again regained the lead three minutes into the second half when a lovely David Harris pass in traffic sent Shannon Gallant away to score his first try which he converted.

Liam Walker replied for the Bulls to level the scores again with James Boustani’s conversion, before Wests regained the lead for a 4th time when Gallant scored his second try which he duly converted.

The Bulls came back to level scores again when Jake Ferguson scored wide out on the right for Boustani to convert and level the scores for a 4th time at 22-all with 20 minutes left.

However, Wests were not to be denied. A superb Brendan Waters cut out pass sent hit Kurt Atkinson on the chest to send him over with 15 minutes left, before Magpies centre Tala Mapesone crossed wide out to extend the visitors’ lead to 32-22 with Gallant’s conversion.

Stimon Mow gave the Bulls faithful some hope when he crossed in the corner with under five minutes left to set up the grandstand finish. Wests hung on to win as the Bulls could not take the chances they had created to pull the game out of the fire in the closing minutes.

The Blacktown Workers finally had a change of luck as they found out a tough 16-4 win at Laybutt Sports Fields, Blacktown last Saturday.

As both sides had boosts from players coming back from Intrust Super Premiership (ISP) due to byes from Penrith (Blacktown) and Newtown (Cabramatta) respectively, the match was played as a tight, tough arm wrestle all day.

Henry Raiwalui and Dwayne Brown got early tries for the Workers, while Kenny Niko got the Two Blues’ reply to bring the scores to 10-4 with under 15 minutes left.

The Workers’ hardy supporters had their hearts in their mouths when the home side were reduced to 12 men with a sin binning by referee Josh McGowan for a professional foul after a long Cabramatta burst.

However, this time the home side steadied and veteran backrower Jerry Key got the match winning try with under five minutes left with Kurt Horton’s conversion sealing the win at 16-4.

The win saw the Workers replace Cabramatta in the Top Eight.

The Auburn Warriors showed they were not a ‘one man band’ with a stunning 34-8 disposal of the Asquith Magpies at Lidcombe Oval last Saturday.

The Warriors overcame the loss of gun centre Addison Demetriou to the Canterbury ISP team “down the road” at Belmore with a convincing six tries to two win over the Magpies.

Wingers Abraham El Sakhem and Ben Dakuwaqa both got doubles as the Warriors moved into the Top 4 with their win – coming away in the closing stages to secure their biggest win for the season to date.

Dakuwaqa now has 12 tries for the season, while El Sakhem has nine majors for the year.

Finally, defending Premiers Mounties coasted to an easy 60-12 thumping of bottom placed Kingsgrove Colts at Aubrey Keech Reserve, Hinchinbrook last Saturday.

Racing out to a 36-nil lead at half time, “The Mulga” did what was required in the second half to complete their win.

Finlay Dibley completed his hat trick of tries in the closing minutes, while Mitch Beggs and Allen Malea-Malau scored doubles out of the 11 tries that Mounties posted.

Wentworthville and Wests still sit on top of the Massey Cup table with 18 points, followed by Mounties on 16 points, and Auburn who move into fourth spot on 15 points. The Colts still sit at the bottom of the ladder on four points.

Another full round is set down for this weekend, with four games on Saturday and two matches on Sunday.

The three main games of the round are all on Saturday. Auburn Warriors play Wests at Lidcombe Oval at 2pm, while arch rivals Wentworthville and Mounties light up a top of the table clash at Aubrey Keech Reserve at 3pm. Blacktown Workers continue the ‘western battles’ against St Marys at Laybutt Fields in Saturday’s other main match.

Competition leaders Mounties established themselves as Sydney Shield favourites with a 34-26 win over the Peninsula Seagulls in the Sydney Shield match of the round at Aubrey Keech Reserve, Hinchinbrook last Saturday.

The first surprise was Seagulls co-coach and former NRL Premiership winning captain Craig Gower did not play after being named on an extended interchange bench during the leadup.

“The Mulga” took full advantage of a nervous, error riddled Seagulls outfit – and some questionable decisions from referee James Vella – to establish a match winning 22-nil lead after 31 minutes through tries to Maile Li, Sam Aiga, Luke Cauchi and Jake Horton.

Horton converted three of those tries to give Mounties their lead, before Barry McGrady replied for the Seagulls to bring the scores back to 22-6 at half time with Luke Martin’s conversion.

A remarkable 98 metre try from a kick return to Seagulls fullback Jake Pickering – his 11th for the season – gave the visitors hope of a comeback at 22-12 five minutes into the second half.

Maiko Sivo’s 14th try of the year replied for Mounties to extend the lead back to 28-12 mid way throught the second half.

The Seagulls then held on to some football to properly mount a comeback. Tries to centre Knox Time and backrower Todd Wilson brought the scores back to 28-22 with 10 minutes left.

Again, Mounties steadied under pressure for Cauchi’s second try to seal the win and top spot on the table at 34-22 with under five minutes left. Seagulls winger Richie Goodwin scored a late consolation try wide out to close the scoring.

St Marys moved into outright second spot with a 42-28 win over local arch rivals Windsor Wolves in their ‘battle of the Blue Mountains” at Windsor Sports Complex last Saturday evening.

The Wolves used their confidence from their previous two wins to serve it up to the Saints for the first 60 minutes of the contest – with Lachlan Jackson, Michael Wade, Shaun Fitzgerald scoring tries to give the Wolves a 16-12 lead.

This was extended to 22-12 early in the second half when Jackson scored his second try with Ben Hudd’s conversion, and the upset was right on the cards.

St Marys then stepped up a gear with 5 unanswered tries – all converted – to put the match beyond doubt. Hooker Jamie Hill scored a double for the Saints and skipper Dean Zammit led the way up front with a try for the visitors.

Dean Barron got the Wolves’ late consolation try to make the final score more respectable.

Defending Premiers Wentworthville moved into third place on the Shield table with a 52-18 demolition of Belrose at Lionel Watts Reserve last Sunday.

In a tight, physical contest for most of the first half, Regan Rona opened the scoring for the Magpies in the third minute from a Keehan Diamond grubber before Beau Abrahams replied from a superb James Mortimer pass to give Belrose to level the scores.

Magpies centre Cecil MacKenzie regained the lead in the 19th minutes with a neat try down the left, before a flare up saw Belrose prop Erza Howe sin binned by referee Phillip Sung.

‘Wenty’ hooker Matt Collins extended the lead to 16-6 with the conversion from half Kamren Cryer, before Belrose struck back with a controversial ‘eight point try’ in the 35th minute.

As stand in Belrose fullback Alex Zarounas fed off a Mortimer pass to score behind the posts, Magpies backrower Michael Lekkas came in ‘over the top’ as he grounded the ball.

This started another flare up before referee Sung gave the mandatory ‘eight point try’ penalty in front of the posts after the successful conversion for the Lekkas hit.

Mortimer kicked the penalty goal to complete the eight point try which narrowed the Wenty lead to 16-14. Lekkas was placed on report by Sung for the incident.

This ‘eight point try’ was as close as Belrose got for the rest of the day as ‘Wenty’ were stung into action.

First, winger Ryan Burroughs scored the first of his two spectacular tries on the stroke of half time where he beat four defenders – and even hurdled his tackled team mate Mackenzie on the ground in transit – to give Wenty a 22-14 half time lead with Cryer’s conversion.

Then the Magpies – led by a Chris Rakete and Jesse Malcolm-Dinsdale inspired forward pack who were smashing the lighter Belrose pack into submission with brutal, bone jarring defence – hit their straps.

Interchange forward Andre Iro bagged a brace of tries from close range, Burroughs scored his second try with an 85 metre dash from a break inside his own 20 metre area, and full back Anthony Katrib latched on to a Cryer grubber to score.

When Rona got his second try as a makeshift hooker from dummy half with 6 minutes left, the demolition was complete at 52-14 with Cryer’s eighth goal from nine attempts.

Belrose centre Damien Reti finished off a neat movement wide out to give the Eagles a consolation try in the final minute.

An Edwin Connor conversion from the touch line after the full time siren gave East Campbelltown a 34-32 win over the Guildford Owls in a ‘heart stopper’ at Waminda Oval last Sunday.

In easily the best match played at Waminda Oval this season so far, the Eagles started the match on fire and on the back of tries to Mason Talalua, Wayde Dunley, Fred Tavaga and George Vatuvie led 22-12 at half time.

The young Guildford outfit stormed back into the in a see sawing second half and with tries to Kelepi Manu, Anthony Layoun and Aaron Pene got to a 32-28 lead with under five minutes left.

Just as they were staring at a sixth straight loss, the Eagles launched one last desperate attack as the final siren sounded. The last pass got to winger Craig Moustakas who just beat the Guildford cover to score his 13th try for the season in the corner.

Connor nailed the conversion from touch to ‘bring the house down’ for the Waminda faithful and break Guildford hearts.

Western Suburbs shrugged off having just a 14 man rotation with a remarkable 52-12 thrashing of the Hills District Bulls at Crestwood Reserve last Sunday.

The Magpies could only muster one fresh reserve for the match due to various late withdrawals. This meant that the visitors only used five of their allotted eight interchanges for the match.

Wests opened the scoring with a Ryan Cane try in the fifth minute, before Mitch Zampetides replied when he barged over under the posts to give the Bulls a 6-4 lead with Nick Holliday’s conversion. It was the only time the Bulls led all day.

The undermanned Magpies gave a sign of things to come when Noa Tuitavuki scored off a Jai Doolan pass to regain the lead, before Royce Tout scored off some great lead up from Paul Roberts to give Wests a 14-6 lead at the break.

Despite their lack of numbers, the Magpies destroyed the Bulls with 30 minutes of dazzling attack in the second half against token defence to win the match.

Kelsey Coakes bagged two tries to extend the lead before Jack Pearce scored in the first tackle from the restart after Coakes’s second try to blow the Magpies lead out to 32-6. Senio Toa and Phil Brombal then joined in the party with tries to put the game to bed with 15 minutes to play.

The Bulls got a consolation try when James Atua burst through the overworked Magpies pack with 10 minutes left, before Toa and Pearce completed their doubles in the last 5 minutes to put the icing on the Magpies’ cake.

A five try performance by Tupou Kavaefiafi propelled Cabramatta to a 38-32 win over the Blacktown Workers at Laybutt Sports Fields, Blacktown last Saturday.

With winger Luke Lavender also bagging a double, the Two Blues held out a Workers outfit that stayed in touch in a 13 try attacking feast – Cabramatta scoring a seven tries to six victory in a match where defence at times was slack.

The Workers threatened in the second half on the back of two tries to winger Cameron Davis, but were no answer to the brilliance of Kavaefiafi at the back for ‘Cabra’.

Finally, the Asquith Magpies’ Sydney Shield season reached a new low as they were humiliated 90-10 by a rampant Auburn Warriors at Lidcombe Oval last Saturday.

The Warriors ran in 18 tries in their romp over the outclassed Magpies and ‘bombed’ at least five other scoring opportunites – with hooker Connor Jones helping himself to a personal best five tries, with Antonio Hala and Jerry Leasi picking up four tries each.

If the Warriors’ goalkicking was better on the day to go with their missed chances – seven conversions were missed – then Auburn would have racked up an incredible century of points.

The 80 point margin of defeat and 90 points conceded were sadly both records as the largest in the Magpies’ 63 year history.

This led to the Magpies forfeiting their match against Guildford this Sunday at Storey Park – their first forfeit since entering any NSWRL open age competition in 2006.

After Asquith’s forfeit, this weekend’s round will now see four matches set down for Saturday and two matches on Sunday.

The clash of arch rivals Mounties and Wentworthville at Aubrey Keech Reserve, Hinchinbrook on Saturday is the clear match of the round.

The club most badly affected by the inclusion of Kingsgrove in the RMC is Guildford. Whereas the 13 team SS in 2015 allowed for 3 clubs to receive byes in Rd 11 and Rd 22, the 2016 RMC has no such arrangements and 4 clubs will only have one bye - Wests, Guildford, Cabra and Hills. In addition, 4 clubs only play Kingsgrove once - Auburn, Mounties, Guildford and Blacktown so Guildford have the double whammy.

Wests match reports from last saturday

#RONMASSEYCUP
Western Suburbs ground out their fourth consecutive win by outlasting a gallant yet frustrated Auburn Warriors 26-18 at Lidcombe

Auburn needed to simply get their hands on the ball to register their opening try, Lindon McGrady bursting clear through the Wests defence before his momentum carried him across the stripe, Brendan Cox putting the home side ahead 6-0. Wests struck back halfway through the first half is markedly less spectacular fashion, a Brendan Waters ball of the hip putting Daniel Rakvin into a small gap, Rakvin showing tremendous strength to wrestle the ball to the ground as Auburn converged late.

The difficult conditions meant plenty of play tight near the ruck, and that’s exactly how Auburn retook the lead in the 27th minute, Jake Kamire bulldozing his way over underneath the crossbar as Wests went to sleep on their own line, Auburn taking their 12-6 lead to the sheds at the interval. Wests decided to dare the weather gods to play havoc but the black and whites prevailed four minutes into the second half, the Magpies swinging the ball right and then left with Jerome Mose securing a Josh Davis offload and diving over in the corner to bring Wests back to within two.

Mose was in again two minutes later, a Brendan Waters crossfield bomb catching the wind to fall into Mose’s arms with just enough space between chasers for Mose to touch down and put Wests ahead by two, Thomas Capper extending the lead off the restart after Wests blew the game open by finding space through the middle of the Auburn ruck. Wests had found Auburn’s kryptonite and Brendan Waters took full advantage, popping a neat hip ball to put Heheako Tuima in alongside the uprights, Ben Dakuwaqa bursting through the Wests pack with 14 minutes remaining to get Auburn back into a contest they were seemingly out of.

While Auburn had worked their way back into the contest, their discipline had been an issue all game, and the 11th penalty to Wests gave Shannon Gallant an opportunity to put Wests ahead by eight with five minutes on the clock, which the Magpies’ skipper duly accepted to help Wests, with Wentworthville’s match postponed, to the top of the Ron Massey Cup ladder.

WESTERN SUBURBS 26 (Jerome Mose 2, Daniel Rakvin, Thomas Capper, Heheako Tuima tries; Shannon Gallant 3 from 6) defeated AUBURN 18 (Lindon McGrady, Jake Kamire, Ben Dakuwaqa tries; Brendan Cox 2 from 2, Addison Demetriou 1 from 1)

#SYDSHIELD
Horrific handling marred an otherwise entertaining Sydney Shield match, with Wests accounting for Auburn 17-16 in a cliffhanger played in atrocious weather at Lidcombe.

Handling errors were the star attraction of the first half hour, with both sides looking to play styles of football more attuned to dry weather than the difficult, to be kind, conditions, with rain promptly replaced on the 20 minute mark by a light gale. Auburn were first to post points after adjusting their gameplan accordingly, Jad Mahmood barging over from dummy half to put Auburn ahead 6-0 just seven minutes ahead of halftime.

However, Western Suburbs decided to follow Auburn’s lead in reverting to a simpler style, which paid dividends just four minutes later as Noa Tuitavuki ducked under Auburn’s first line to reach out and plant the ball on the line. Roman Ioelu’s successful conversion sent the teams to the sheds at 6-6 after a gruelling and dour first half only a rugby league purist could appreciate, although Wests had one last chance to post points after the siren, but a bouncing ball proved too difficult to handle in goal.

Wests didn’t need nearly as much time in the second half to garb their second try, a right side shift in blustery conditions providing just enough room for Jack Pearce to dive over ahead of the Warriors cover defence for a 10-6 advantage after 49 minutes. Auburn found the temptation too great and conceded a penalty for reaching out from their own line to knock the ball down at the 53rd minute. Wests didn’t need to be invited twice, Hosea Leuea stepping through the Auburn line to touch down in his senior debut for the Magpies after playing a leading role in Wests’ SG Ball campaign this year.

Auburn desperately needed to be next to score to keep the match a contest, and Solomone Araura obliged in the 68th minute, forcing his way through three Wests defenders after bobbling the ball on his chest, Zack Greene reducing the deficit to six points. Auburn struck gold five minutes from the end with a long ball finding Antonio Hala out wide, with Wests’ vocal supporters baying for a forward pass. Zack Greene’s touchline conversion sailing wide to ensure a grandstand finish at 16-16.

Wests would prevail in the end, though, with Roman Ioelu slotting a field goal with less than 60 seconds on the clock to see Wests home 17-16.

WESTERN SUBURBS 17 (Noa Tuitavuki, Jack Pearce, Hosea Leuea tries; Roman Ioelu 2 from 3, Roman Ioelu field goal) defeated AUBURN 16 (Jad Mahmood, Solomone Araura, Antonio Hala tries; Zack Greene 2 from 3)

Windsor 50 (L Jackson 3, E Tone 2, B Smallwood, D Robinson, S Kiel, C Arama, S Fitzgerald tries; B Hudd 3, L Jackson 2) def Hills District 12 (H McWilliam, A Overton, M Katia tries)

Mounties continued its golden run in the SS with an emphatic dismissal of the Wenty challenge which was genuine for no more than 30 minutes. Hills struggles were exacerbated by the elevation of Jason Gerecs and Nick Holliday to RMC, so much so that coach Trevor Schodel, who briefly replaced Ricky Stuart in the Canberra Raiders side in 1993, was forced to take the field.

Good to see Hills get that win up, as it was probably the season without it.

But whilst I rate A f**kas as a footballer, Windsor are a pretty ordinary unit.

yes, Windsor are clearly the worst of the 12 teams. Hills did enough to win but they will have to improve significantly if they are going to challenge the teams that count.

I reckon it maybe the first game Trevor has played since strapping the boots on for Kingsgrove in the Bundy Cup in 2012

It's pretty asinine of the NSWRL to not adequately fixture the RMC and SS competitions to ensure all teams get the same alotment of byes. They really don't care about the competitions.

It's great to see Wests at the top of the table. They're playing some great footy and have a sniff about the title this season. Just need to knock off Mounties who have the wood over them.

In the sole game in Sydney Shield on the wet weekend, Roman Loelu secured the points for Wests against Auburn by kicking a field goal to break the 16-16 deadlock in the last minute. This week Loelu scored 2 tries and 6 goals in Wests Tigers 40-20 win over Souths in the NYC.

Asquith have named a Sydney Shield side for this weekends match against Blacktown. They must still be planning on playing out the season.

They named a team for the Guildford game and still forfeited. Apparently they had no bench in the Auburn game and the numbers listed this week suggest that some jerseys have gone missing. Neither of the Papera boys played against Auburn and they have used 45 players this season with only 5 playing more than 7 games.

Four of the Guildford players that were in the Sydney Shield team that lost to East Campbelltown 34-32 have been promoted. Aaron Pene and Tui Oleapu are playing NSW Cup for Wenty, Jake Carlow is in RMC and Mason Cerruto is playing NYC.

Tony Dosen's RMC Wrap

Defending Ron Massey Cup premiers Mounties re-established themselves as the competition’s yardstick team with a convincing 22-14 win over the Wentworthville Magpies at Mount Pritchard Sports Complex last Saturday.

With Aubrey Keech Reserve unavailable while still recovering from flooding during the previous weekend’s ‘big wet,’ the Mulga returned to their old home ground with their best performance of the season to date.

After a tight opening, Mounties slowly ground their way on top in the back end of the first stanza - with tries to John Kennedy, Jordan Martin and Allen Mulia Malau giving the home side a 16-4 lead at the break. Winger Roydan Gillett got his first try for the day for the Magpies in the first half.

Mounties then kicked away further when five-eighth Chad Porter scored in the second half to give his side a match-winning 22-4 lead after he converted his own try. Porter finished with three goals from four attempts.

Wentworthville were given some hope when referee Josh McGowan sin-binned former Penrith NYC player Jarrod Brackenhofer midway through the second half.

The Magpies – who were missing experienced centre Yileen ‘buddy’ Gordon after his call-up to play Intrust Super Premiership NSW across town at Henson Park against Newtown – rallied with tries to Dylan Izzard and Gillett’s second major to bring the scores back to 22-14.

Gillett took his season tally to 11 tries in Ron Massey Cup with his double.

Mounties steadied when Brackenhofer returned from the bin and ran down the clock in the closing stages to seal their win.

The Guildford Owls overcame having to play with 12 men for 47 minutes to score a gutsy 30-22 win over the Asquith Magpies in the match played at Storey Park last Friday night.

In an incident-packed match to christen the new Storey Park floodlights, the Magpies led twice during the night -only for the courageous Owls outfit to run them down on each occasion.

Asquith jumped out to a 10-nil lead with early tries to Alex Nicholls-O’Neill – his 12th for the year - and Andy Oughtred from a Jeremy King fumble in-goal.

Then the match exploded after Lopeti Wolfgramm scored a brilliant individual try to get the visitors on the board at 10-6 with his own conversion.

Referee Darian Furner struggled for control as Guildford winger Lesley Ngaulafe and Magpies skipper Joel Latham were sin-binned, while Wolfgramm was sensationally sent off in the 33rd minute for a dangerous spear tackle on Magpies centre Jeco Makatoa.

Makatoa landed on the cricket pitch area in the tackle and took no further part in the match after leaving the field.

Former Cronulla and Wests Tigers NRL player Penani Manumalealii incredibly scored in the last minute of the first stanza while Guildford were down to 11 men to give the visitors a shock 12-10 at the break with Mason Farrell’s conversion.

Guildford extended their lead to 18-10 after both sin bin players returned when hooker Alex Bush picked up a bizarre try.

An attempted in-goal clearance of a Lazarus Brown grubber kick by Nicholls-O’Neill and Asquith winger Jack Hawkins skewed 20 metres across the in goal area straight to Bush to score.

It appeared that Asquith were finally gaining the upper hand when halves Brad Wall and Ben Fisher scored superb individual tries from close range against a tired defence for a 22-18 Magpies lead with 10 minutes left.

Guildford’s 12 men then lifted against the odds one last time in the closing stages. Centre Harmony Hunt levelled the scores with a superb try with seven minutes left.

Then back-rower Michael Rickard picked up a rebound off an upright from a Bush grubber kick to score under the posts and give the Owls a 28-22 lead with four minutes to play after Farrell’s conversion.

The Owls completed the job with a Farrell penalty goal in the last minute to seal a remarkable win and move back into the Massey Cup Top eight.

Finally, the Hills District Bulls got themselves back into finals contention with a 38-16 win over a disappointing Windsor Wolves at Crestwood Reserve in the match played last Sunday.

The match was tight in the first half as both sides struggled for control knowing that the loser was virtually gone for the season.

Hills led only 12-10 at half-time as tries to Liam Walker and Sydney Shield call up Nick Holliday were cancelled out by majors to Abraham Murdock and skipper Sam Hollis for the Wolves.

The Bulls – despite a reshuffle that saw Holliday and backrower Jason Gerecs called up from Sydney Shield – then asserted their authority in the second stanza in one of their best halves for the season.

Hills District scored five second-half tries to put the Wolves to the sword. Walker and Holliday completed doubles, while Ben Falcone, Stimon Mow and livewire fullback Gerard McCallum got tries to complete the second half rout.

Murdock got his second try in the closing minutes to give Windsor something to take out of the match.

The other two matches from this round – Blacktown Workers v St Marys and Cabramatta v Kingsgrove Colts will now be played on the spare weekend of 23/24 July.

Wentworthville’s loss sees Western Suburbs keep sole leadership of the Massey Cup on 20 points ahead of Wentworthville and Mounties on 18 points.

Guildford’s win sees them move to eighth spot for now on 11 points, and Kingsgrove stay at the bottom with just the four competition points.

Play returns to a full round this weekend with three matches on Saturday and three games on Sunday. St Marys resume after a three-week break to take on Mounties on Saturday at the recovered Aubrey Keech Reserve in the clear Match Of The Round.

Tony Dosen's SS Wrap

Competition leaders Mounties re-established themselves as the team to beat with a 52-12 hiding of defending premiers Wentworthville at Mount Pritchard Sports Complex last Saturday.

With Aubrey Keech Reserve unavailable while still recovering from flooding during the previous weekend’s ‘big wet,’ the Mulga returned to their old home ground with a statement to the rest of the competition.

The first half lived up to the ‘match of the season’ billing as both sides’ big forward packs shared the honours.

Maiko Sivo’s 15th try of the season and Jake Horton’s 13th major for the year were countered by tries to Magpies skipper Chris Rakete and Jordan Tukere to level scores before Jordan Martin scored wide out to give Mounties a 16-12 lead at the half-time break.

Then the competition leaders ran riot in the second half.

Mounties ran in 36 unanswered points – six unanswered converted tries – in the second half against a shell-shocked Magpies outfit.

Sivo completed his hat-trick of tries in the second half to go to the top of the Sydney Shield try scorers list with 16. Horton completed a double to take his season tally to 14 majors.

Veteran prop Tere Glassie, centre Shannon Chapman and fullback Maile Li all got on the scoresheet as the class of the Mounties back line was too much for the Magpies.

Horton finished with a personal tally of 24 points with eight goals from nine attempts to go with his two tries. Horton is now the leading point scorer in Sydney Shield with 198 points for the season already to date.

The Windsor Wolves continued their recent improved form with an easy 50-12 win over a badly undermanned Hills District Bulls at Crestwood Reserve in the only other Shield game for the weekend last Sunday.

Racked by unavailability, injuries and players being called up to the Ron Massey Cup team (Jason Gerecs and Nick Holliday) and Intrust Super Premiership NSW for the North Sydney Bears (Devon Makoare-Boyce), Bulls coach Trevor Schodel was forced to come out of retirement and play himself at rising 45 years of age.

Schodel got through the match unharmed and injury-free.

However, not even his presence could stop Windsor from running riot in the second half after a tight first 40 minutes.

Lachlan Jackson completed a hat-trick of tries for the Wolves and landed two goals with the boot for a personal tally of 16 points, while back rower Elijah Tone bagged a double.

Brandon Smallwood, Chanel Arama, Shaun Fitzgerald and Dylan Robinson all got tries amongst the Wolves’ 10 majors. Hayden McWilliam, Mali Katia and Anthony Overton got the Bulls’ three unconverted tries in a well-beaten side.

The three other matches from this round – Blacktown Workers v St Marys, Cabramatta v Peninsula Seagulls and East Campbelltown v Belrose – will now be played on the next spare weekend of 23/24 July.

Mounties have now racked up 10 straight wins since their only loss for the year to Belrose back in Round 2 on March 12 to open up a four point lead over St Marys at the top of the table.

The only other change to the ladder from last weekend is Windsor moving past Blacktown Workers at the bottom of the table with their win.

Play returns to a full round this weekend with three matches on Saturday and four games on Sunday.

St Marys resume after a three-week break to take on Mounties on Saturday at the recovered Aubrey Keech Reserve in the clear Match Of The Round between the two sides currently first and second on the Sydney Shield ladder.

Saw the games @ Blacktown today

In the Sydney Shield Asquith had a real dig. It looked for 60 minutes of the match they could produce a massive upset. You could tell both sides hadn't played in a while with a lot of drop ball. 6 all at the break. Score stayed that way until Blake Goodman broke the deadlock with about 20 to go. The floodgates opened with Workers running in a few late tries. Asquith were reduced to 11 men for the last 5 minutes with two players mouthing off. Shae Jarvis has returned to Asquith and played really well. The 34-6 scoreline doesn't reflect how close the match was.

In the Massey Blacktown lost their 4th match of the season in the last 60 seconds. Another heartbreaking loss.

Belrose v Hills SS has been postponed. Apparently both teams wanted to play but referee's made the decision for the game to not go ahead.
