Things did look grim at the start of the season. They performed poorly in the trials and after the bye in round 1, Mounties and Auburn scored a combined total of 90 points against them.

However, they secured a major sponsor just as the season was starting and the influx of North Sydney players and a few key additions to the roster have resulted in 4 consecutive wins.

One of the teams CBW played in the trials was Wollongong Collegians. This once powerful club finished with the wooden spoon in the Coal League last year but have picked up 4 players from the RMC - Greg Davis and Joel Tubbs (Asquith), Jordan Bowles (Auburn) and Morris Higham (Cabra). Going in the reverse direction were Finlay Dibley and Sage Wilder, who are playing with the high flying Mounties SS team.

In the absence of money from Balmain Leagues West Ashfield are supporting the junior clubs from Leichhardt, Balmain, Five Dock, strathfield, Enfield and Concord Burwood. Not sure if they are tipping in for the seniors at CB though? Some of these clubs were actually part of the Wests Junior League until they moved to Campbelltown.

Ryde Eastwood Leagues club are helping the Ryde, Carlingford and Dundas clubs

The Balmain JRL have been really lucky to have these to clubs pick up a lot of fhe slack.

RMC Wrap

The Asquith Magpies continued their form resurgence in the Ron Massey Cup with a 34-28 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies in the ‘battle of the birds’ last Sunday at Storey Park.
Classy Wests hooker Dayne Craig eased over from dummy half to open the scoring in the sixth minute, before wide-running bacl-rower Jackson Williams extended the lead when he finished off great work started by an Andy Fiagatusa offload 12 minutes later.
When Craig got his second try from close range, Wests looked in control with a 14-nil lead after just 20 minutes. Indeed Wests could have led by further if a David Harris ‘try’ was not being called back for a line-ball forward pass.
Asquith replied with tries to prop Taylor McCann, five-eighth Brad Wall in a brilliant solo effort, and centre Jeco Makatoa who made the most of Wests fullback Shannon Gallant spilling a ‘bomb’ to lead 18-14 at half time.
Asquith then opened the game up with tries to winger Abbas Miski, centre Adam Kalcina from a long Miski break, and then winger Alex-Nicholls O’Neil after Gallant allowed another midfield bomb to bounce for a commanding 34-18 lead with 15 minutes left.
When Jerome Mose took a superb cut-out pass from Wests half Brendan Waters on the chest to score with 12 minutes left, it was game on again at 34-24.
However after another Wests ‘try’ to Luke Williams was denied by another line-ball forward-pass call, Asquith’s defence held on well enough to secure a second straight victory.
Wests centre Tom Morrison got his second try right on the full-time bell – but it was too little too late.
Concord-Burwood stormed into the Massey Cup top four with another remarkable second-half comeback – this time to stun Cabramatta 22-20 at Goddard Park last Sunday.
After the Two Blues did all the hard work for the first 75 minutes in holding the big Wolves pack and with back-rower Kenny Niko scoring a double, Cabra looked to be safe leading 20-10 with five minutes to play.
However, Joe Flint scored to bring the Wolves back to 20-16. Then with under two minute to pay former Newtown Jet and Wyong Roo Jack Siejka finished off a Wolves movement for hooker Aaron Booth to convert to give the Wolves the lead at 22-20.
Concord-Burwood then hung on in the face of one last Cabra attack to pull off a second come-from-behind miracle win in seven days.
Competition leaders Wentworthville edged out a gallant St Marys Saints 26-22 at Ringrose Park last Sunday in their much anticipated clash of the ‘park footy' powerhouses.
After Adrian Ha’angana opened the scoring in the 13th minute after a tight start, St Marys took it right up to the competition leaders.
The Saints replied with converted tries to hooker Jamie Hill and centre Ray Lesoa to give the visitors a 12-6 lead. This was cut back to 12-10 at half-time when Wenty interchange Jack Miller scored his first try seven minutes from the break.
The Magpies won the match with two tries in the first five minutes of the second half.
Miller bagged his second try two minutes in, before centre Jake Butler-Fleming posted his first try just two minutes later to give the Magpies a 20-12 lead.
Both sides had their chances, and giant Fijian winger Luke Nadurutalo got the Saints back in the contest with a converted try with 12 minutes left for 20-18.
Wenty steadied and Butler-Fleming scored the critical winning try – his second – with nine minutes left to give Wenty a match-winning 26-18 with Will Ropers’ conversion.
The Saints did score in the final minute through Brent Naden – but it was too late for the Saints.
Blacktown Workers returned to form with an emphatic 36-12 demolition of a disappointing Auburn Warriors in the wet at Lidcombe Oval last Saturday.
The match was still a contest with Blacktown only leading 14-12 at half-time. Addison Demetirou was again the Warriors’ standout player with a first half try, two conversion and a power of work in attack and defence to keep the home side in touch.
However, the Workers took advantage of poor Auburn handling errors and posted four unanswered second-half tries to win going away at the finish. Matt Place and Will Butler marked their return to form with two tries each.
Windsor Wolves moved back into the Massey Cup Top Eight with a scrappy 20-10 win over Guildford Owls at Windsor Complex last Saturday Night as the rain that fell at Lidcombe earlier in the day arrived at Windsor.
Windsor led 12-six at half-time, and on the back of two tries to centre Marli Sini and a couple of penalty goals to Aaron f**kas, did enough in a game that reached no great heights to hold out a disappointing Owls outfit.
Guildford’s second straight disappointing loss sees them drop to second last on the Massey Cup table.
Finally, Hills District Bulls did as they expected against Kingsgrove Colts at Crestwood Reserve last Sunday – easily winning by 60-10.
With James Wehbe starring at half and posting a hat-trick of tries, the Bulls ran in 11 majors to leave the Colts again outclassed by an opponent in the Ron Massey Cup. Gerard McCallum and Ben Vengoa also bagged two tries each in the Bulls’ win.
This weekend sees another full round of action with four matches on Saturday and two matches on Sunday - headlined by St Marys hosting Wests at St Marys on Saturday Night and Asquith playing Hills District Bulls at Storey Park on Sunday.

Competition leaders Mounties served notice that they are Sydney Shield title favourites early at Hinchinbrook last Saturday.
Things started well enough for the Eagles when winger Chris Vaotuua took a Michael Stevens bomb in the third minute to give the visitors a 6-nil lead.
It was the only time the Eagles led all day. Maika Sivo replied for Mounties with a try in the 19th minute, before a superb individual try to Brad Speechley put the home side in front.
Winger Craig Moustakas levelled the scores for the Eagles, but that was cancelled out by Jake Horton’s’ first try in the shadows of half-time to give Mounties the lead at 16-10 at the break.
Then Mounties flexed their muscle with four unanswered tries in the second stanza to win easily.
Horton completed his double on his way to a personal tally of 20 points with six goals from seven with the boot, and Sivo completed his brace as “The Mulga” blotted the Eagles out of the contest.
The Peninsula Seagulls joined Mounties on 12 points with a 26-22 win over Hills District Bulls at Crestwood Reserve, Baulkham Hills last Sunday.
After the Seagulls led 16-6 at half-time after a tight first half, a second try to winger Jeremy Marshall appeared to be putting the Seagulls in control at 20-6.
The Bulls came back to lead 22-20 with three superb tries in nine minutes as the visitors coughed up the very little ball they had in the second stanza.
However, Seagulls fullback Jake Pickering finished off a brilliant long-range counter attack which involved centre Barry McGrady with nine minutes left to regain the lead at 26-22 for the visitors.
The Seagulls then were able to hold on in defence in the closing stages to finish off their win.
Belrose Eagles joined Mounties and Seagulls on 12 points with a resounding 38-18 win over a game Cabramatta Outfit at Lionel Watts Reserve last Sunday.
The Two Blues made Belrose work for it – with tries to Luke Lavender and Jake Webb giving ‘Cabra’ an 8-4 lead after Adam Saunders opened the scoring for Belrose.
The class of Belrose Captain/Coach James Mortimer then stood up. Mortimer scored two tries at the end of great Eagles team play to have the home side up 16-8 at the break.
This lead was extended to 28-8 with two more converted tries at the start of the second half to put Belrose at arm's length.
Cabra were game and came back with brilliant second try to Lavender to draw the scores back to 28-18, before Belrose steadied with two more tries to seal their victory.
The Auburn Warriors returned to the winner’s list with a 38-24 win over a Blacktown Workers at Lidcombe Oval last Saturday.
A hat-trick of tries to Mario El Boustani, plus a double to five-eighth Jade Anderson paved the way for the Warriors’ second win for the season in the Sydney Shield – seeing them go past Cabramatta on the Shield ladder.
The Guildford Owls consolidated their position in the top eight with a solid 38-22 win over a disappointing Windsor Wolves at Windsor Sporting Complex last Saturday.
Owls prop Alec Hobbs led the way with a strong game up front and also scored two tries as the Owls posted a seven tries to four victory.
Nat Barnes got two tries for Windsor – who still have not won a game in Sydney Shield this season.
Defending Premiers Wentworthville edged out St Marys 38-30 in a try fest at Ringrose Park last Sunday.
Magpies winger Regan Rona scored two of Wenty’s seven tries as the home side had to stave off a number of comebacks from the Saints before eventually posting their second straight win.
Saints’ Fijian flyer Isoq Qionimacawa kept the visitors comebacks in the second half alive with his two tries from the five that the Saints scored.
Finally, Western Suburbs were too strong for a gallant Asquith 46-22 in the ‘battle of the birds’ at Storey Park last Sunday.
Asquith finally broke their Sydney Shield scoring drought after 343 minutes over six weeks when prop Jamin Stankovic crashed over under the posts to give Asquith a shock 6-nil lead in the third minute.
Asquith took advantage of a lax Wests attitude when they scored a second try in the first half to be down only 24-10 at the break.
When the home side scored two converted tries midway through the second half, the unthinkable was right on the cards with Wests leading only 24-22.
Wests then took advantage of a tiring Asquith to score three tries in nine minutes to put the game beyond doubt.
Mounties, the Seagulls and Belrose all have 12 points at the top of the Shield table, with Guildford and St Marys just two points behind on 10. Asquith remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder with no competition points from seven games.
This weekend sees another full round with four games on Saturday and three games on Sunday – with the top-of-the-table Peninsula Derby between the Seagulls and Belrose on Saturday Night at Forestville Oval the standout match of the round.

It appears that Will Lafolafo, who was signed with North Sydney last year and played most of the year (including the GF) with Asquith is back at the Maggies after starting the season playing rugby union. Simon Clarke must have made a call, their bench has looked very shallow in the last week or so with Steadman Leafau (sp?) leaving and Jordan Latham called up to NSW Cup.

Concord Burwood vs Asquith at Goddard 2pm
Hills vs St Marys at Crestwood 3pm.

The game between Cook Islands and Lebanon at Belmore tomorrow will affect both of these games.

The 20 man Lebanon squad includes James Boustani and Jason Webhe (Hills) and Mark Daoud and Abbas Miski (Asquith). Geoff Daniela (St Marys) is in the Cook Islands team.

A few RMC teams that are not playing this weekend also have players in the Lebanon team - Jamie Clark, Danny Barakat, Abraham El Zakhem and Mario El Bostani (Auburn), Ahmed Ellaz, Tarek El Masri and Daniel Abou Sleiman (Cabramatta), and Mitch Mamary and Nick Kassis (Wenty).

Concord Burwood extended its winning streak to 6 games with a crushing 36-14 win over Asquith. The games was as good as over by half time when 5 tries were posted via continuous offloads and big holes in the defence. Although Asquith put on a better showing the 26-0 lead was hardly diminished.

At Crestwood the lead changed hands several times before Hills prevailed over St Marys 24-20.
Each side scored 4 times but in the last 10 minutes Hills benefited from two questionable calls concerning forward passes. A Hills player is facing an eye gouge allegation.

In the Sydney Shield, St Marys beat Hills 32-28. Hills went into the game without Hutch Maiava, David Baumann and Sean Walpole were all elevated to RMC. In the other game Belrose beat Asquith 42-0.

The contempt of the NSWRL for these 2 comps is staggering. The SS ladder on its website did not have the sunday games from last week included and the program for this week still had several try scorers for Burwood against Kingsgrove missing.

For a umber of years, Terry Liberopolous produced the weekly program and over time he assembled a team of reporters that resulted in every game in NSW Cup, RMC and junior reps receiving a match report as well as a round summary for SS. Those for the top 2 grades included the actual team line ups rather than the lists published on the prior Tuesday, which are often changed extensively.

However, the NSWRL took over the program, sacks all of the reporters and now there is nothing.

NSWRL twitter does not publish half time and full time scores for RMC and SS whereas a few years ago it did.

Expect more of the same.
