Roosters chairman reveals Finch flip
By Dean Ritchie
July 20, 2006

SYDNEY Roosters chairman Nick Politis revealed last night that he had changed his mind and put halfback Brett Finch on the open market because the young player was under "unbelievable pressure".

The move came just two weeks after Politis declared: "There is more chance of George Bush playing for the Roosters than there is of us letting (Brett Finch) go".

There was no sign of the leader of the free world at Bondi Junction last night, but the Roosters are now looking for a halfback as Finch moves to secure his future elsewhere.

Politis told The Daily Telegraph that Finch's manager, Steve Gillis, had approached the club seeking permission to negotiate with other clubs.

"As a 24-year-old, Brett has been under unbelievable pressure for such a young man," Politis said.

"We had an internal review and discussion and approved this request. It was in Brett's best interest and those of the club."

The Roosters agreed to the request despite Finch, an Origin star this season, being under contract at Bondi for 2007.

"At most other NRL clubs, Finch wouldn't be under such public scrutiny," Politis continued.

"It may prove a turning point in Brett's career where he can enjoy his football.

"Everyone at the club respects Brett as a young man who gives 100 per cent each time he takes the field.

"He has been given permission and if he can negotiate a good deal, we won't stand in his way."

But complications have already emerged over Finch's possible move from the Roosters.

Last night it emerged that:

* SOME officials at Parramatta, the club Finch has been linked to because of his friendship with incoming coach Michael Hagan, are not convinced the Eels should sign him.
* WITH the now defunct June 30 deadline having passed, many clubs have little money left.
* THE halfback may stay a Rooster if offered a reduced contract with rival clubs.
* THERE is a possibility Finch could end up in England.

The Daily Telegraph understands THAT Brisbane, Canberra, South Sydney and North Queensland are not interested in Finch.

Wests Tigers and St George-Illawarra were interested in Finch a month ago - but not now.

The Eels are definite contenders, however, because Hagan is a fan of Finch. The pair were together in 1997 at Super League club Hunter Mariners.

Gillis has not fielded any British offers but he has not ruled out a move to England.

He said Finch was looking "at all his options".

"The only problem is that June 30 has come and gone and there's not an awful amount of money out there," Gillis said.

"If he does find a competitive club he wants to play for, the Roosters have insisted we get back to them with any written offers. But he still could stay."

Roosters teammate Craig Fitzgibbon feels for Finch, saying: "It's been hard on him. It's got to get to him eventually but he doesn't show it."

Five-eighth Braith Anasta added: "It has been hard on Finchy."

What's this extra pressure been on Finch? I may have missed it being out of the country, but don't all half backs have that same scrutiny and pressure on them to perform?

Just because the Roosters glory days appear to be behind them and none of the team have been performing as well as they have in the past, I don't see why Politis is complaining. Sounds very much liek a smoke screen to me, and maybe Finch just wants out of a bad environment...

Though there's a bit of talk there from the manager about money, so maybe this is all about Finch thinking he could get an increased contract due to SOO and the Roosters weren't playing ball?

I'd still consider him for Parra, but not paying more than the Roosters have been paying him. He's only young, Parra or the Roosters should let him prove his worth consistently on the field at the current price, and only then consider higher contracts for subsequent years. If he wants a change of environment, come to us, if he wants extra money from it, then don't bother.

The extra pressure is from the fans. He puts it out there and rates himself and as we know the problem with doing that is if you don't deliver, you leave yourself open for criticism. And there in lies the reason why we shouldn't sign him. If he feels pressure from Roosters fans, he doesn't know the half of it! We are ten times more intense than the cardboard cutouts that go to Roosters games.

Gee, the News Ltd report was there was division in the Eels camp regarding Finch (it must have been so tempting for the Journo not to use the word crisis) but the SMH reports the truth. Surprise, surprise.

If Dubya is gonna come play footy we HAVE to make sure he plays for us.

If he can win an election with less votes than the opposition surely he can win us games when we end up with less points than our opponents?

Yeah but it means that 10 Marines a Week are sacrificed.

is there quote of his that indicates that he "rates" himself?

is that why some of our club stalwarts such as Burt, Wagon, Cayless and Vella are treated like scum by some supporters.

One thing that you can guarantee if he plays he'll be the first bloke blamed for any loss no matter how good or bad his may be.

Failing that, he'll just bomb the f**k out of them.

Look I am open to the idea of Finch ... but if the REAL reason he is leaving the Rooseters is because of the pressure of fan expectation, does anyone think that it would be any less at Parra? Pretty funny when you think about it.

Does anyone else get the same translation in their head when reading this?

"We'd like whatever club takes him to pay his contract outright and not have to pay anything for the 2007 season unlike the majority of players we have released in the previous two years"

there isn't a Parramatta player in the history of our proud club that hasn't felt pressure of fan expectation, even growing up as a fan we wopuld despise all outsiders or new signings until they proved themselves as players a number of players have copped it in the past and I dare say have left the club because of it..Bob Lindner, Andrew Leeds and Adam Dykes are three that spring to mind.

Hes not worth paying out his roosters contract for. f**k that idea right off. Pay what he is worth and not a cent more (even that wouldn't be much imo).

The Roosters won't be releasing Finch if the team that takes him doesn't pay his full contract.

Hagan loves Finch and wants him at the club next year

Fitzy has said in another article that he knows Hagnas wants Finch and will talk to the Roosters about getting him (don't have the link but I think it was in the SMH)

Parra are basically the only NRL club with any money.

Due to the piss poor management of the whole Lyon coming back deal, Parra put all their eggs in one basket and are now desprate to find a band-aid soultion.
