Dufty carved the Cows up last year, 2 tries and an assist if I recall. In fact his speed was the difference for us in quite a few games. Just thought I'd mention that.

So people keep telling me what a great organizer Norman is and I'm just wondering if someone could give me an example of him doing that in the last 2 years because I'm not seeing it. Unless by direction you mean getting the guys to run one out for 5 tackles then kick straight to a winger or fb.

No-one looks happy or at ease out there. We defended quite well and made some good metres but we created nothing in the way of good attacking footy. But I'm sure our brilliant coaches will " give it time" rather than wake up to themselves.

Well let’s see.......both our wingers played well and made good ground. Aitken ran hard and tackled well in the firsthalf. He fell into old habits in the second half but our team as a whole were poor in the second 40. Mary quite simply doesn’t give Vaughan enough game time and until Korbin gets on the field our middle rotation of forwards weakens us significantly. McInnes played well in the first half but became slow in the second half and ran from dummy half only once. Tariq was, except for one hit, very quiet and Lafai made some crucial errors. Overall we were clunky, disjointed and seemed like we had three playmakers but no plays.

Not as disappointed as some on this forum regarding the performance tonight.

Too much dropped ball put us behind the 8 ball.

The heat and humidity coupled with lack of possession wore us down.

Full marks to Asiata for some quality ball
playing that set up 2 tries.

Good grubber for another try to Cowboys.

One try conceded due to exhaustion.

Aitken, Host and Lawrie played well.

Neither of our wingers were outstanding.

Could have easily scored a few tries ourselves through Lawrie and Sims..

We missed Dufty’s speed.

Better performance than Charity Shield.

Confident we will improve.

Korbin Sims will be back in round 3.

JDB will be back by round 6.

On the bright side, if it’s a bad start to the year McIdiot might not have them firing too early and the side might actually build through the season rather than fall over like busted’s from July
Yep thinking the same its a ploy lose Next 7 fool all the coaches then go on a winning streak .... See our management and coach know what their doing .....

Heat , humidity, rain and exhaustion and our coach leaves 2 fresh blokes on the bench till the game is all but lost. We play handicapped with this goose at the helm all the time.

My last post yesterday noted we would struggle up in NQ.

It is going to be a long season.

Since last year Nene gone/ big and genuinely fast. Now inferior wingers. Both trying very hard but no. What a try by Nene tonight.

No JDB nor Leeson. Sorry I know many think that Blake Lawrie is NRL standard. He is a plodder with courage. Fringe NRL being generous. No impact. Give Kerr a run this week please.

Dufty left on the bench. This stupid approach will go on. Last year Dufty took the pressure off the centres as oppositions were distracted by him. Now he is under pressure to somehow run on for a cameo and ‘carve them up’. Big joke.

We copped some home town Harry calls by the refs. The forward pass for the 2 nd half try from McLean to Taumalolo was very forward. The knock on call when asotasi bounced it off his our guys leg was laughable and the younger ref was staring straight at it. Next week our guys should just be like the Cows shallow 10 and take off before the ruck clears as this is the new free flow. Still Cows too good.

Souths will win by 30 next week if the same team takes the field.

I thought the first half was run by Norman and we looked pretty good. They did come back but mainly due to some dumb stuff - pretty sure Widdop dropped the ball twice and hunt did some bad pass.

Anyway, in the second half did Paul McGregor instruct hunt to step up as Norman got nothing and hunt was back to his useless bomb kicking allowing 10 metres of our defence to hit them.
In th last 15 mins I think the role reversed and Norman got us that try.

He is a genuine talent and we need to put him and Widdop in th halves with hunt at 9, mciness I like but see ya later to Reggies. He needs to run more, the other young bloke deserves a shot he’s good and super fast.

Plodders on our bench need to be sacked. Leilus is too far and ineffective.. needs to lose 10 kilos. Defensively poor.

Pavalova is not first grade material until he learns to score a jumping try in the corner. He should just watch videos of nene all day.

Lomax back onto the wing, lafai on again off again. Why McGregor ever takes Vaughan off is a foolish play, the guy is a machine and make a huge loss when he’s off the field.

There is a definite a and b set of forwards at present. Maybe Paul McGregor is trying combos can be the only reason for the lack of consistency. Trialing shit if for on the training paddock or for trial games not NRL rd 1

Dragons go down in season opener

The experience of Michael Morgan and the rampaging runs of Jason Taumalolo proved the difference as the Cowboys opened their 2019 campaign with a 24-12 win over the Dragons in Townsville.

It was the perfect start to the post-Johnathan Thurston era, with the North Queensland legend looking on from the grandstand and smiling broadly during the five tries-to-two victory.

Morgan, playing in the No.7 jersey worn with distinction by Thurston, took control to set up four tries and score one himself, in his first game as Cowboys captain.

The pack, tagged by Maroons legend Paul Vautin recently as one of the best in the club's history, fired from the get-go with Taumalolo, Matt Scott, Coen Hess, Jordan McLean and new recruit Josh McGuire all on song.

The quality of football and possession was shared evenly by both teams on a hot and humid Townsville evening. The Dragons, through repeat sets, showed signs of crossing over and had their chance in the sixth minute but Justin O'Neill denied Mikaele Ravalawa with a super cover tackle.

The Cowboys turned defence into attack with a Morgan kick in the seventh minute but they were unable to capitalise due to a McGuire knock on, coughing up the ball in the middle of the park.

McGuire, who was promoted to the starting side by Paul Green an hour before kick-off, looked a little rusty early but blossomed as the game went on.

Corey Norman’s boot looked below average at times, with a kick to the corner in the ninth minute failing to find touch. But his attack shone when just moments later he found space off the back of an error from Jordan Kahu.

That led to Euan Aitken scoring in the 12th minute to post the Dragons' first points. Gareth Widdop added the extras to make it 6-0.

Just when it looked like the Dragons had found some form, Widdop fumbled a Morgan high ball in the 15th minute after a great one-on-one shot from O’Neill.

Cowboys centre Tom Opacic had a chance to score in the 27th minute, but came centimetres short after Widdop brought him down. It became evident that last-play attacking options on a number of occasions cruelled the Cowboys chances of points.

Taumololo then stepped up and began showing his moments of brilliance. He made a break in the 31st minute which set up a try for Javid Bowen off the back of some fine work from Morgan and O’Neill.

In total Taumalolo's match figures included 21 hit-ups for 286 metres in just 64 minutes, 93 post contact metres and two line breaks.

Taumalolo being Taumalolo

A try to former Dragon Nene Macdonald on the stroke of halftime gave the Cowboys an 8-6 lead at the break.

The home side defended their line grimly early in the second half and a crucial moment came in the 43rd minute when Blake Lawrie took a quick tap for the Dragons and surged across the line but was held up by a Kahu trysaver..

The Cowboys were then able to pick up repeat sets themselves with Morgan scoring out wide off a quick pass from John Asiata in the 57th minute.

Te Maire Martin crossed in the 67th minute after great lead-up work by Taumalolo.

The rain continued for the majority of the second half and made conditions slippery, with a number of ball handling errors creeping in from both teams.

But that didn’t stop the Cowboys from finding the line in the 75th minute through a Morgan grubber for O’Neill. Kahu converted to make it 24-6.

The Dragons grabbed a consolation try in the corner from Jordan Pereira.
