We better be prepared to win ugly.
We haven't got the luxury of wins on the board when we lose Hunt and Friz for origin.
Moylan , if plays will be rusty.

St George Illawarra 2019: Graham finds silver lining to Newcastle thumping
Dragons Den

IT was the low point of their season but Dragons veteran James Graham says his side can take a slither of inspiration from their disappointing loss to Newcastle - ironically in the performance of the Knights.

The 33-point win over the Dragons at Mudgee was the Knights fourth on the trot. It was barely a month ago that Nathan Brown's head was on the chopping block after five straight losses.

One of those defeats came by a single point to the Dragons in golden-point. That victory was the second in a four-game winning streak for Paul McGregor's side.

They've followed it up with four consecutive defeats ahead of Sunday's clash with Cronulla but Graham said Newcastle's run is a reminder of how quickly things can change.

"I think on the positive spin, we know we can go and win four games in a row, because we've done it, we know what we're capable of," Graham said.

"You look for inspiration from other teams, you look at Newcastle.

"Yeah we played them five weeks ago, we knew they were a good team then. They played well, it was 13-12, look where they've got to now.

"I don't see any reason why we can't do something similar. Obviously we're not looking five weeks down the track, we're focusing on this weekend's game."

Graham admits he was left baffled by the performance against Newcastle, one that prompted McGregor to wield the big stick in the selection room.

It's certainly put the side on notice ahead of the clash with the Sharks, with Graham saying he's not complacent about his own place in the 17.

"I'm all in, even myself," he said.

"If [McGregor] for whatever reason doesn't think I'm performing to the standard that he expects for the team, if he was to drop me, than i'll have to take that like a man.

"There's probably a number of reasons as to why. Probably the reason why everyone's so frustrated and so down about the performance is we know we're a lot better.

"We know that we were way better than what we dished up on the weekend. That's probably the main reason why people are down, why the criticism is coming.

"Even externally, we know we're a lot better with the players and the squad and coaching staff, we're a lot better than that.

``What I'm seeing is that we're pretty hurt from the performance and everybody's pretty determined to turn it around."

It's not his fault.

Moylan , if plays will be rusty.

I’m unconvinced Frizell will be picked as his form has been pretty ordinary (under difficult circumstances) this season.

Unlike previous years, I doubt SOO will be an issue. Personally, I feel only Frizzy and Hunt will get a look in.

(And, Tyson will only get selected on reputation only...he is way down on form).’

Sims and Vaughan won’t be picked.
He will use that excuse.
Sims and Vaughan will be selected.

The St George Illawarra Dragons will face the Cronulla Sharks in Indigenous Round at WIN Stadium, Wollongong this weekend. Below are some of the more memorable games between the two combatants.

Dragons 38 defeated Sharks 0
Round 8: May 1, 2010
WIN Stadium

A hat-trick to Brett Morris and a double to Matt Cooper sparked the Dragons to their highest ever winning margin over the Sharks in this dominant victory. Almost 16,000 people packed into WIN Stadium to witness the Round 8 rampage which was fuelled by the appearance of former Dragon Trent Barrett coming up against his old side.

The Ricky Stuart coached Sharks held the Dragons to 18 points at half-time, but the Red V's try-scoring ways continued in the second stanza. The triumph was also the Dragons' highest winning margin of the 2010 season in what would eventually become a premiership-winning year.

Dragons 24 defeated Sharks 8
Preliminary final: September 19, 1999
ANZ Australia

A match that remains on the St George Illawarra highlight reel all these years later. Anthony Mundine ran in three tries in the 1999 preliminary final against the Sharks.

Captained by now Dragons coach Paul McGregor, the newly formed side fought out an intense battle in front of 51,827 spectators to upset the star-studded Sharks outfit.

The victory awarded the newly-formed St George Illawarra side a place in the grand final; they'd be joined by another team in its inaugural year in the Melbourne Storm.

Dragons 40 defeated Sharks 20
Round 6: April 13, 2018
WIN Stadium

A second-half rampage blew out the score-line in the most recent match between the neighbouring rivals. With the game still hanging in the balance at half-time at 16-10 and the Dragons playing with 12 men after Cameron McInnes was sent to the sin-bin early in the match, the final 40 minutes saw the Dragons streak away with the lead.

Matt Dufty crossed for his second try of the match just one minute into the second half, much to the delight of the 17,882 in attendance at WIN Stadium. The Sharks mounted a small fightback, crossing for two quick tries to get within eight points of the lead. But the Dragons ran in a further three tries before the match concluded and cruised to victory.

Starting to get a good vibe about this game.

However, there is still the chance of late changes to the team. Robson has to pass some HIA protocols before he gets the green light for example.

Jimmy Frizz will be there and Vaughan And hunt not so sure about tariq but he probably will be there too
I hope none of them make it but that will not happen
How can a team going like busteds have 4 players selected for origin?
Its just crazy. I actually don't think anyone should be selected other than Frizzell, he is the only rep level player we have at the moment.

Agree Crush
I hope no one make it's.
But I think Vaughan probably deserves it as well.
I hope fittler pick the team on form.
If so as you say only Frizz will make it

There is an article online today titled NRL PLAYERS POLL where the players rate there top players in all positions.
Vaughan is nowhere to be seen. The players don't rate him as top 3 so why would Origin selectors?
On Origin though, as much as every year I feel it derails us because we are generally going well beforehand and players come back worse off maybe this year it will work in our favor?
We have nothing to lose.
If Hunt gets selected and plays well he may find some self-belief and stop sucking so much. How many 7 tackle sets has he given away this year?

Not one of our players were voted by their peers in a recent poll for best players in a variety of categories. Considering the current form of SGI, this does not surprise me.

Stat attack: Round 11 v Sharks

There isn't much between these local derby combatants as the halfway point of the season approaches.

Throughout 42 matches, the Dragons have won 22 meetings while the Sharks have won 19. However, in recent years the Sharks have struggled when making the trip to Wollongong winning just one of their last seven games at WIN Stadium.

The Dragons have a higher completion rate with 77 per cent (fourth best competition-wide) while the Sharks have completed at 73 per cent (13th). The Dragons also have a quicker play the ball speed with 3.42 seconds compared to the Sharks with 3.47 seconds. The higher completion rate and faster play the ball bodes well in the Dragons' favour.

In attack, the Sharks have the edge with the 10th best attack as well as the most offloads competition-wide (131). The Dragons aren't far behind (12th best attack) but lose ground in defence given they've conceded the second-most points.

Danger man
Andrew Fifita

Standing 194 centimetres tall and weighing in at a mammoth 118 kilograms, Andrew Fifita causes carnage no matter where he plays with over 24 representative matches for his state and country.

Despite some nagging injuries this season Fifita still tops the NRL for offloads (35) – almost ten more than the nearest competitor. Averaging 120.5 metres per game, limiting his impact through the middle will be a big task for the Dragons.

The 29-year-old is defending at an impressive 92 per cent efficiency this season with 318 total tackles while busting 31 tackles in attack.

Key match-ups
Ben Hunt v Chad Townsend

Hunt comes up against the side he debuted against back in 2009 with a point to prove by outplaying in-form Cronulla halfback Chad Townsend.

Both halves play a game management role in their side and have plenty of attacking upside with seven try assists and three tries each.

Townsend can claim a better kicking game this season, forcing nine dropouts to Ben Hunt's six. But its defence where Hunt makes up ground on his opposite number, making an extra 64 tackles.

Tyson Frizell v Briton Nikora

Experience takes on youth in this entertaining clash of hard running back-rowers. Frizell has played at the highest level for his country and amassed 144 NRL appearances, while Nikora has played just nine matches since debuting this season.

Despite giving up plenty of experience to his opposite number, Nikora has had no trouble settling into the NRL scoring three tries and producing seven line breaks.

After missing some time on the field through injury, Frizell will have a point to prove against the frontrunner for the 2019 Dally M Rookie of the Year.

To be honest, Friz ( as much as I rate the guy ), has been off as well.

Naturally gifted as a machine, but 2019 thus far he has been average. Our whole squad has.
