They still have 13 matches to play in 2019, but there is sure to be a genuine sense of urgency for the Dragons heading into Monday's match against the Bulldogs.

They're only two points outside the top eight, but momentum isn't with the men in the Red V at the moment.

They lost their last five matches and slipped to 13th on the ladder.

As for the Bulldogs, their struggles started in round one and haven't let up.

Their only three wins have come against sides also outside the top eight in Wests Tigers, North Queensland and Gold Coast.

On the upside, the Dragons have injuries galore and the Dogs will be treating this one as a winnable contest.

As will be the case with many matches this weekend, the availability of Origin players will have a big say in the outcome of this contest.

Bulldogs: Just one slight alteration for the Doggies, with Adam Elliott and Raymond Faitala-Mariner switching places. Elliott will start at lock and Faitala-Mariner shifts to the back-row. Origin rep Dylan Napa is named as a reserve and will almost certainly come into the starting side if he gets through Wednesday night.

Dragons: The Dragons look nothing like the team that took the field against Cronulla two weeks ago. Paul McGregor has named all three of his Origin reps - Tyson Frizell, Ben Hunt and Paul Vaughan - among an extended reserves list and will see how they pull up after Wednesday before finalising his 17-man team. Matt Dufty returns at fullback, with Zac Lomax shifting to centre for Tim Lafai (syndesmosis), while Jordan Pereira was dropped to the reserves. Corey Norman makes his comeback and Jai Field has been named at halfback but could make way for Hunt. Blake Lawrie moves from lock to prop for James Graham (fibula fracture), while Luciano Leilua has been named to start at lock. Korbin Sims and Jacob Host will start if Frizell and Vaughan are rested.

Key match-up
Corey Norman v Kieran Foran. The expected return of Norman should give the Dragons more to offer in attack. If the Dragons forwards can win the battle in the middle, Norman will have time to work some magic. Foran, on the other hand, needs to kick-start Canterbury's attack.

For the Bulldogs to win
The Bulldogs need to find a way to start scoring more points. They're averaging fewer than 13 a game so far this year. High completion rates are one thing, being a consistent threat with ball in hand is something else.

For the Dragons to win
Injuries to key forwards haven't helped, but the Dragons are sitting in 16th spot when it comes to metres gained. As a comparison, the Rabbitohs average an extra 170m per game in ground made with ball in hand.

Line breaks haven't been a forte of either side so far this year. According to NRL.com Stats, the Dragons have made 35 in 11 matches, while the Bulldogs have made 36 in 12.

Canterbury aren't short of willing workers in their forward pack. They have three players - Aiden Tolman (seventh), Jeremy Marshall-King (ninth) and Josh Jackson (10th) all inside the top 10 for tackles made. Cameron McInness (second) and the injured James Graham (19th) are the only Dragons in the top 20.

  Corey Norman is set to return from injury to boost struggling St George Illawarra.
  Corey Norman has declared himself ready to return from injury and help St George Illawarra end their spiralling slide down the NRL ladder.
  
  Norman hasn't played since fracturing his cheekbone in their round-eight loss to Parramatta, one of five straight defeats that has left them languishing in 13th spot.
  
  But the star five-eighth is expected to be named by coach Paul McGregor for Monday's Queen's Birthday clash with Canterbury.
  
  "I was going to play (last) week if we had a game but obviously we had the bye and it was good to get away," Norman said.
  
  "I'll be ready to play against the Bulldogs.
  
  "I got a bit bored sitting on the sidelines. Training's boring when you can't do much with your face. So I'm excited to jump back in and play some footy."
  
  Norman's inclusion is a welcome sight for a Dragons side that, like many NRL clubs this year, have been forced to reach deep into their rosters.
  
  Skipper Gareth Widdop (shoulder), James Graham (leg) and Tim Lafai (ankle) are all on their long-term casualty list, while Jack de Belin remains stood down.
  
  Norman said the entire team needed to band together to arrest their alarming slump that includes failing to complete 80 per cent in all five losses.
  
  "We'll do it as a team. As a team we need to get out of this rut and we're looking forward to doing it on Monday," Norman said.
  
  "We just haven't given ourselves a chance. We've dropped the ball, our possession's poor.

So Matt Dufty has turned into a demon defender after one week in the CC has he and Ravalawa has resolved his many issues in roughly the same time frame . Yeah right. The dogs will be drooling at the prospect of a repeat of last year's 38-0 farewell embarrassment to Gypsy.

Mary seems to think that all you have to do is cure players defensive, positional and catching issues is to spell them for one week. This is cargo cult stuff. It's time for thinking outside of the square. I would have moved Pereira into the right centre and given Saab a shot on the wing. Campbell Graham was 18 when he debuted on the wing for Souths last year so why not give Saab a go?
