Of cause the players love him because no one gets dropped , they can play badly all year and they are still there .... If a new coach comes in they will have to play for their spot .... Wish I had a boss like that ....

Five things: Round 25 v Titans

Before the Dragons run out for their final match of the season, here are five things to keep in mind during the match.

Widdop's last Red V hurrah

After 194 NRL appearances, 124 of which in Dragons colours, and 76 of those as captain, Gareth Widdop will play his last St George Illawarra match before returning home to England.

Widdop is joining the Warrington Wolves on a three-year deal which could see out the 30-year-old's career. Widdop made his debut in the NRL back in 2010 for the Melbourne Storm and tasted grand final success for the club in 2013.

Widdop's time under the Red V has featured numerous highlights – hear Widdop himself outline his favourite moments playing for the Dragons.

His final match for the Dragons will be all the motivation the team needs to send our club captain out a winner.

Jerry's farewell tour

The peoples 'goat', Jeremy Latimore will also run out for the final time ever on Saturday.

Latimore has been in NRL for more than a decade and has become one of the competitions premier journeyman playing for five different clubs.

Latimore admits himself he was never the best player in his various clubs but was embraced at each club for his humour and attitude.

'Big Jerry' is a much-loved part of the playing group and will no doubt be a driving force behind their approach to the match.

Vaughan 150

Dragons enforcer Paul Vaughan reaches an impressive milestone on Saturday, playing in his 150th NRL game.

Hailing from Canberra as a Gungahlin Bulls junior, Vaughan made his first grade debut in the local Canberra competition at just 16-years-old, going on to break his nose in the match.

That didn't deter the front-rower, who continued to work at his dream of playing in the NRL.

In 2013, Vaughan made his first grade debut for the Raiders against the Cowboys. Vaughan has since represented the Italy Azzuri at the last two Rugby League World Cups as well as the Country Origin side (2014-17). He also made his State of Origin debut in 2018 and hasn't missed a game for the Blues since. Listen to Paul Vaughan's take on his 150th match below!

Vaughan to celebrate 150

Finish on a high

Despite both sides being out of finals contention and their positions on the NRL ladder already confirmed, don’t discount Saturday's match from being a hard-fought encounter.

As the final match for both sides, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain heading into next season, knowing an end of season break is just around the corner.

Dragons winning record over Titans

Back in 2007, the Titans made their maiden appearance in the NRL against the Dragons. The Dragons went on to trump the Gold Coast 20-18 in front of 42,000 spectators in a finals-esque atmosphere.

Since, the Dragons have produced 14 victories against the Titans and also built a strong record at Cbus Super Stadium, winning five of nine matches at the ground.

Hello all, longtime reader, first-time poster ... Have heard from a good authority that some of the boys eligible for the CC final are dirty at being selected in the first grade squad this weekend. Don’t know which players my source was referring to but you could probably take an educated guess. Not the best attitude to take into a game, if true, but understandable given some have been up and down all year and/or overlooked too often. Our CC team plays with bags of spirit, where first grade has not done for weeks now. You can’t blame the coach for picking the best team available regardless of the reasons, however it’s clear he must view a potential loss to the Titans as a big trigger for him to be shown the door immediately, pre-review. TBH I felt he looked resigned to that scenario in last week’s PC.
I would be too at least they’re a good chance of a win in CC lol

WTF is Robson doing in the team. Just f**k off McGregor and when you get there f**k off some more, no one there will want you either so you’ll have to f**k off to somewhere else then just f**k off again and buy yourself a Bulldogs and Boncos jersey when you finally get there. You deserve it

The team selections indicate our current coach is not leaving. Unless they are still really believing a ‘review ‘ will lead to the truth because why pick this team? Robson ? Latimore? Lafai? Aitken? The only answer is that he thinks he has to win.In other words he thinks he will be safe if we beat the Titans are Aitken and Lafai going anywhere, no apparently. Is Timm gone. A definite yes. Are we stuffed again in 2020? A definite YES

Coach's preview: Round 25 v Titans
St George Illawarra Dragons head coach Paul McGregor talks to the media ahead of our Round 25 match against the Gold Coast Titans.

https://www.dragons.com.au/news/2019/09/06/coachs-preview-round-25-v-titans/
I made the mistake of listening to the coach's preview....
Preparing for this game like it's the most important game of the season.
Lots of gibberish about preparing for next year, giving the young players some more valuable experience and the significance this game has on that.
Underscoring the 3 big occasions which include:
1. Farewell game for club captain Widdop who ditched us to go to England mid contract.
2. Latimore who has shown no loyalty to any club during his unremarkable career and is insignificant in terms of being a St. George stalwart.
3. Vaughn's 150th - well OK - I suppose it is some kind of career landmark for one of the players that actually performs consistently.
But compare all that hoo ha with Nightingale;s last game and Lance Thompson's memorial at Kogarah. The occasions he is spouting are insignificant especially when you consider the flogging we copped at the hands of the Dogs that night.
I also found it interesting that he is preparing the team to play with pride and good mental attitude for this last game for the sake of our fans.
Well....why couldn't he do that during the previous 24 rounds of footy?
I also would point out that we are playing on the Gold Coast and there is unlikely to be many St. George fans present for McGregor to impress.
What a joker...honestly.
It's my fault for opening the link in the first place.

Dragons draft in Gould to help with end-of-season review

Phil Gould will begin a review of St George Illawarra football operations next week after being approached by Dragons coach Paul McGregor.

Gould, NSW’s most successful State of Origin coach and a two-time premiership-winning mentor with Canterbury and Penrith, has more than 30 years experience as a coach, administrator and commentator and is considered one of the most knowledgeable people in the game.

He was a guest at the annual Illawarra Rugby League luncheon in Wollongong, which was a roast in honour of McGregor and attended by many of his former team-mates and coaches.

McGregor later asked Gould to help out with St George Illawarra’s annual review of football operations and offer an outsider’s perspective on areas he and the club can improve.

After confirming his interest to Dragons CEO Brian Johnston, Gould will be involved with the review once the team’s season officially ends after Saturday’s match against Gold Coast at Cbus Super Stadium.

“Paul McGregor asked me a couple of weeks ago if I could provide an external set of eyes and ears over the Dragons' end-of-year review process,” Gould said. “I spoke with Brian Johnston this week. Brian, Paul and I will meet again next week after the Dragons' final game.”

Dragons out to honour milestones

While the specific details of Gould’s role are unclear, it is not expected that the review will lead to him taking on a permanent role with St George Illawarra.

Gould has previously been involved in end-of-season reviews at other clubs, most notably at North Queensland where he recommended to the Cowboys in 2010 that Neil Henry should remain as coach and Johnathan Thurston as captain.

“The end-of-year review process, conducted by every NRL club every year, represents part of the process of future planning,” Gould said.

“I’m happy to lend a hand. It's not a paid job. Every year, even during my time at Panthers, I get NRL coaches, assistant coaches, chairmen, CEOs and even players requesting to catch up and have a cup of coffee to talk about life, their football clubs and their careers. I've always been more than happy to help if I can.

“I’m looking forward to speaking with the Dragons club next week.”

Johnston said that while the club undertakes a review at the end of every year, it will have added significance this season given St George Illawarra’s disappointing 2019 campaign.

"Nobody at the club is happy with how the Dragons have performed and that's extended to all our stakeholders including members and supporters," Johnston said.

"We are committed to reviewing all aspects of our football department to ensure improvement in 2020."

There is no suggestion that McGregor’s job is under threat, and he is expected to commence his new two-year contract in 2020, but changes to the club’s coaching staff have been predicted.

A series of changes were made after the 2016 review overseen by a panel comprising former Dragons skipper Mark Coyne, sport scientist Dr Craig Duncan and performance specialists Dirk Melton and Clare Prideaux.

Among their recommendations was that McGregor leave recruitment decisions to St George Illawarra head of pathways Ian Millward so he could focus solely on coaching and the Dragons fell one win short of a finals berth in 2017 before finishing seventh last season after leading the premiership for 18 rounds.

Without the services of key forward Jack de Belin for the entire season due to the ARLC’s no-fault stand-down policy and captain Gareth Widdop for most of it after a shoulder injury, the Dragons have struggled and will finish 15th regardless of the result of Saturday’s match against Gold Coast.

Widdop reflects on Dragons memories

Tyson Frizell (ruptured testicle), James Graham (broken leg), Korbin Sims (broken arm), Corey Norman (fractured cheekbone), Tim Lafai (ankle), Zac Lomax (broken thumb) and Jeremy Latimore (knee) have also spent extended time on the sidelines.

Once the team was no longer in finals reckoning, Tariq Sims underwent surgery for a groin injury he had battled since round three and rookie winger Jason Saab had shoulder surgery, while hooker Cameron McInnes broke his leg in last weekend’s loss to Wests Tigers.

Besides the loss of Widdop (Warrington) and Jeremy Latimore (retiring), the Dragons roster will be largely unchanged in 2020, with the likes of Saab, Tristan Sailor and Jackson Ford expected to feature more regularly in the top team after making their debuts this season.

The club’s Canterbury Cup team are minor premiers and their under-20s are also in the finals of their NSWRL competition.

Final game of the 2019 season for the Big Red V , and am I excited ? No as 15th place has already been secured by our motley bunch , coached by non other than the NRL’s Dud of the decade Mary ‘ the maestro ‘ McGregor !

Both teams have an even chance of losing and winning this match not that it really matters as they both seem more intent upon organizing their respective Mad Monday patties .

I don’t care who wins this match as all of my enthusiasm for the Dragons has gone.
I do however wish the very best to our lower grade team in their semifinal - at least they have worked hard throughout the season to earn their place.

By the way in the Tele’s Sport on Thursday they had a grading of all clubs - would you believe that our Dragons were the only team with a big ‘ F ‘ for failed ? Interestingly the Bulldogs had a ‘ B’ + amazing comparison between the two teams , they have a bright future ahead of them whereas ours remains clouded in a deep fog .

Well those articles above are a dagger through the heart I hate McGregor now, this bloke is a selfish pos, I suspect Gus is his mate and the job is a freebie, there is no review of this muppet and the fault of failure will be found elsewhere rather than squarely pointed at the coach. f**k this I might punch this prick who fancies himself right on the nose should I run into him I’ve had enough. We mean fk all to this club

The end of the season can't come quickly enough for these two teams.

It seems an eternity ago, but in fact, it was less than a year since the Dragons were most unlucky to lose in the second week of the 2018 finals against the Rabbitohs.

What followed for them in 2019 has been most disappointing.

As for the Titans, the brave souls who viewed them as finals contenders during the pre-season will think twice before doing so again in 2020.

The side that prepares - and plays - in the most professional manner will win this game. As to which side that is, it's anyone's guess.

Titans: Tanah Boyd will start at halfback against the Dragons on Saturday with Ryley Jacks moving to the bench. Ash Taylor and Anthony Don are the first cuts 24 hours out from kickoff. Tyrone Peachey reverts to centre following Kallum Watkins' axing. The Titans have not won a final round game since 2014.

Dragons: Patrick Kaufusi and Zac Lomax have been omitted in the first cuts to the 21-man squad. The Dragons have named a four-man forward bench so look for a possible late change there. The retiring Jeremy Latimore has been included on the bench for his NRL swansong. The Dragons have scored 136 points in their past three games against the Titans.

Key match-up
Jai Arrow v Tyson Frizell. This pair would find a spot in every team in the NRL. Arrow has been a shining light for the Titans while Frizell remains a mainstay for the Blues. Both are in the running for Test selection come the end of the year.

For the Titans to win
Defend, defend and then defend again. The Titans have struggled to maintain defensive intensity for more than just a few sets at a time for most the past few months. Can they achieve what they've been missing in their last hurrah for 2019?

For the Dragons to win
Hope the young brigade show enough to suggest better times are ahead. Tristan Sailor, Jackson Ford and Blake Lawrie have the ability to become central figures in a Dragons revival in 2020.

Brett Kimmorley says
They played a few weeks ago and there was about 60 points scored. It could be the same again this weekend. It is a hard game to get a read on. The Titans might actually be able to produce one last strong performance at home. I’ve no idea who is going to play out of their skin for the Titans but this is a game they can win. Titans by 1

Stat Attack
Since 2013, the Titans have had just one season in which they've finished the year with 10 or more wins. That came in 2016 when they had 11 and squeezed into the top eight.

And another thing ...
Barring an amazing haul in his final match, Michael Gordon will retire in 13th place on the NRL's all-time list of point scorers. Luke Burt (1793) is in 12th spot.

Putting Robson who is going to Cowgirls in the team after indicating in last weeks press conference that Hunt would be no. 9 is an act
of sheer desparation and no idea.

Hello Mary, We are playing the Titans the wooden spooners and our season is well and truly over.

Whereas Robson would be better in canterbury cup finals games against the dogs.

One stupid decision after another. It just keeps coming.

I don't understand this team i would be thinking that being that we are playing for nothing it's time to look at the future actually if i had half a brain i would have started 3 weeks ago cause we were gone by then. Anyway i wouldn't be amiss to a starting line up looking like this:

1: Lomax / Sailor
2. Saab
3. Lomax - if injured any other promising junior (Aaron Schoup would have been good but .... ) Marsters
4. Norman - We know he will be 5/8 next year but let's look at other halves / Max Feagi
5. Pearson / Runciman
6. Field / Clune
7. Field / Levido

9. Hunt - Why play Robson ? He's Leaving ! The only time Hunt has played good has been at 9 in Origin

The Forwards: Play Timms, Hayden Lomax, Eddie Blacker, Jackson Ford (look how good he played when McIdiot woke up and actually gave him a go)

We know what our usual cut and paste team can do, rather can't do !!! so let's look to the future.

Let us see what the juniors have if they have any promise under 1 st grade pressure, they don't have to play perfect games (actually they couldn't do any worse then our weekly cut & Paste selections) if they are any good and show promise we persevere if not at least we go to the market !!!

Surely this isn't too hard is it ?
