There is parking at the ground if you want to pay or if not then expect at least a 10 minute walk to park in one of the nearby streets at least if you get there early.
Be really careful if parking in the streets. If it is signed as no parking then don’t take the risk. The rangers always come out on game day.

Tyson Frizell remains in the frame for a St George Illawarra return against Newcastle
Dragons Den

Possible return: Tyson Frizell. Picture: NRL Photos.

St George Illawarra remain optimistic Tyson Frizell will make his return from injury in the Dragons clash with Newcastle on Sunday night.

Initially expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery for a lacerated testicle suffered in St George Illawarra's round one loss to the Cowboys, Frizell has recovered faster than expected and was named in the Dragons 21-man squad for this weekend.

Teammate Korbin Sims said the squad is looking forward to welcoming their star forward back.

"Tyson trained with the squad on Tuesday," Sims said at a promotional event for Johnny Bigg Shellharbour. "He ran pretty well, we asked him how he felt and he said he felt alright. He'll get the final say on his own fitness.

"The injury is not one you want to fool around with, he's going to be the judge of his own fitness. If he feels good and capable of being able to play a game, we could see him. Hopefully we'll be able to get him back soon."

After making his club debut last weekend, Sims has been named on the bench for the second-straight week. While it's a role he enjoys, Sims is hoping to force his way into the starting team in the coming weeks.

Such a move would allow Frizell to return to the right edge after he shifted to the middle to cover for the indefinite suspension of Jack de Belin.

"At the moment I do enjoy the bench role, I'll do whatever it takes for the team, and the coach knows that, but I'd love to be back starting. If we're winning games with me on the bench, we're not going to change that formula that's working.

"We'll find out in the next couple of weeks, I hope to force my way into the starting side, but at the moment, I'm happy to play the role off the bench.

"The coach knows I want to be a starting player, but you can't get everything your own way. Now it's just biding my time, I'm more than happy to play from the bench. If we're winning games, it's working, and I'm happy to do that for the team."

A Frizell return would provide the Dragons a major boost as they look to build on last week's first win of the season when they face the Knights on Sunday night.

Sims played a major role in that victory, making an impact off the bench and crossing for a crucial try in his first game of the season.

"The win was the most important thing, but I'm not going to complain about scoring a try in my first game. I know there's plenty more work I can do, if I score a couple of extra tries here and there, I'll be pretty happy.

"I think I had some good moments there, it was my first game of the year, so I'm not getting carried away, there's definitely room for improvement. On the other side, I'm quite pleased with the way I took the game on and I'm looking forward to working on the parts of my game I didn't do well."

In a strange twist of fate, Sims will play a former team for the second-straight week and he's looking forward to returning to Newcastle for what should be a close encounter.

"There's a lot of history, a lot of pride at Newcastle. It's a great place, a team on the rise, they've got a lot of good players in their system. From a Dragons point of view, we're looking to build on last week. If we can keep building, little things each week, we'll narrow down the areas we didn't do so well."

Somewhat OT but Ben Hunt has a baby due sometime this week. Hopefully they have a safe delivery, fingers crossed the baby arrives either before or after Ben's journey to Newcastle?

I kid of course, some things are more important than footy and I wish them well, if Hunt must remain home on Sunday so be it.

Latimore is a solid not brilliant bench player. But to say Kerr deserves a run over him is laughable. Kerr needs to go work on his defence. Am I the only person who remembers his turnstile defence earlier in the season???

I understand and respect the POV, but disagree. Kerr has showed enough to get some game time and evaluate him. 10-15 minutes here and there is good to acclimatise him, but to evaluate he needs some games, then we know better if he has a future or not. To me I think he has stepped up hugely in the last 12 months and needs the confidence of a few games, maybe under the wing of Graham, Sims and Frizell

That’s not to say that Latimore is crap, he is a big body that does a solid job, but he isn’t flash, and isn’t a long term solution. He is solid backup who can reliably fill in when needed... he really impressed me last year, but we need to look forward

Tragedy with Mann is he’s gone to another spare parts situation hard to see what the attraction was to go to exactly the same situation at the knights he was in at the saints

He knew what he had at SGI and believed what he was told by the Knights.

Future planning pays off with spine settled for next three years

The future starts now.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor delivered the messsage loud and clear to the club’s new look spine at a video session on Thursday in the wake of captain Gareth Widdop’s shoulder injury during last week’s epic 25-24 defeat of Brisbane.

With Widdop planning to return to England at the end of the season to finish his career with Warrington, the Dragons have settled on fullback Matt Dufty, five-eighth Corey Norman, halfback Ben Hunt and hooker Cameron McInnes as their spine for at least the next three years.

The Dragons hope Widdop will return in round 23 after undergoing surgery on Monday but the club had already made preparations for life without him by signing Norman, who revealed how close he came to joining Sunday’s opponents, Newcastle, during the off-season.

It was a deliberate strategy by the Dragons to sign Dufty, Norman and McInnes until the end of the 2021 season, while Hunt is under contract for a further year.

NSW Origin forwards Paul Vaughan and Tariq Sims, lock Korbin Sims and winger Jordan Pereira are also committed to the club until at least the end of 2021.

Knights v Dragons - Round 4

"Mary said in video today that it would be a good time to gel for the years going forward because I think we are all on contract for the same amount of time," Dufty said. "I guess now we have got a chance to practice for next year - a year early.

"The spine is pretty much set for the next couple of years so it will be a good opportunity to finally gel and play with each other."

Norman, whose negotiations with the Knights had been so advanced he was able to confirm the Kalyn Ponga five-eighth experiment would never have happened if he had signed, said he would now assume a greater playmaking role after shifting to fullback last week to accommodate Widdop's short-lived return to the halves.

"It is Gaz’s team and he is not playing now so I am definitely going to have to step up and help Hunty," said Norman, who kicked the match-winning field goal against the Broncos.

"Our structures are the same and our game plans are the same, it’s just that Dufty is back there now [at fullback]. The spine is going to be set in stone for a while now."

The clash with the Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday will be the first game Dufty starts this season after being used as an impact player as McGregor shuffled his spine towards the end of matches.

When Dufty came on at fullback, Widdop would move to five-eighth, Norman to halfback, Hunt to hooker and McInnes to lock but their spine will now have stability as Zac Lomax is more likely to be used from the interchange to cover an injury to the outside backs.

Despite only playing 13 minutes in the opening-round loss to North Queensland and 19 minutes in the defeat by South Sydney the following week, Dufty believes he has never been fitter as he had to simulate the running he would do during matches in additional training sessions.

"It’s not fun when you have to do it on your own but they have been telling me all year you never know when you have to play 80 minutes and now it’s that time," Dufty said.

"A couple of years ago I might have sat around and had a sook about it but not many people get to play NRL every week so just to be around the boys and in the squad I’m over the moon. That’s the cut-throat life of footy."

Tungai elevated into elite group

The opportunity for McGregor to shuffle his spine only arose because the club was able to secure Norman as Widdop’s long-term replacement after the English playmaker requested a release at the end of the season to play in the Super League.

After being told Parramatta were not intending to offer him a new deal beyond 2019, Norman held discussions with a number of clubs, including the Knights.

"I was going to partner with [Mitchell] Pearce and just keep Ponga at the back," he said. "Everything fizzled out and it looked like I was staying at Parramatta. I went back there in the pre-season and then the Dragons popped up."
