Parker's injury has been a bit of a blessing in disguise. It's made a lot of other players step up in his absence so when he returns they'll be in better stead.
Before I tackle last night's game, did anybody see the R23 2001 clash against the Dragons on Fox?
Such a blast from the past. Essentially the Dragons couldn't do no wrong, every pass, loose ball, bounce seem to go their way. In true Broncos fashion we kept what should have been a 40+ scoreline to 20 and through some individual brilliance nearly pipped them at the finish but unfortunately a lost ball from Carlaw denied us any chance.
A few notes
- The biggest memory I had of this game was of Smith's elbow into Kevie's face. I remember the media uproar from both sides of the border, Qld thought the punishment was deserved, the NSW folk were in an uproar. Watching the replay, it looked fairly innocuous but the fact it caused the damage it did, it definitely warranted some form of punishment.
- Lockyer was awesome in this game. Basically did everything he could to win it for us. The highlight was at 20-6 deep in the second half. Barrett kicks into the in-goal and Lockyer picks it up off the toes, beats 3 defenders, runs 50, beats Blacklock before getting taken by the ankles from Barrett. Next play, Dell scores. Locky had a hand in the other two tries as well - sent Kelly 70m off a scrum play and then put Webcke over through the middle to give Brisbane a chance. A freak and it's a shame his stint at fullback has largely been forgotten in favour for Slater.
- This game compelled me to start a 'Worst Ever Broncos XVII thread' but I didn't want to be too negative after our positive start to the season. A couple of who's who in this game including Kelly, Meyers, Carlaw & Burns. The game also made me question how Meyers and Carlaw were able to make the Australian side that year, both were just so soft.
- For the most part we got the rub of the green from the refs. but the Broncos being penalised for a penalty tap is right up there as one of the most pedantic penalties of all time.
