We are 5-0 and he has a perfect opportunity to have both Host & Sele in the top grade.
If you can't do it now against a team that is struggling then when will he ever find a way to blood these blokes properly?
I sincerely hope he makes the late change and grasps the opportunity.
Carpe diem coach.
He won't.
The guy wants the perfect start and will not give the young blokes a go.
He won't make a last minute change, and Sele will be lucky to play 15 minutes.
3 middles and a back who is playing as a middle.
It's all about the coach and his perfect record so the club will extend his stay.
Yes the team is playing well, but he doesn't give anyone a chance outside of the 17 ( or 16 depending on who he is playing and how close the game is.)

This is a strange criticism.

Are you saying that the coach shouldn't pick the team that he thinks will win?

Its a good thing that Luciano isn't playing this week. We are stronger for it.
Sharks have Edrick Lee playing. No segyaro. No Feki. These guys will get punished on Friday night.
I cannot wait.

Are you telling us that we will lose if we select Sele and Host?
The coach keeps talking about how he progresses the young players well why not do it this week?

Flanno picked Moylan at fullback, like I thought he should. Moylan was the focal point of their attack last Friday night. We have to shut him down.

With Moylan at fullback, I think Cronulla have one of the weakest pairs of halves in the comp in Hodkinson and Townsend. While we have one of the strongest pairs of halves in the comp.

I am pleased that Ramein isn't their. He looks pretty dangerous.

Hame Sele comes into the team that featured in the win over the Rabbitohs last Friday night, while Reece Robson has been named in the reserves.

There will be an update on Leilua provided later this week by Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth in his weekly SMAI High Performance Update segment.

Dugan back for Sharks in Dragons battle at WIN Stadium
Dragons Den News
r0_0_1777_2483_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Centre of attention: Josh Dugan has been named for the Sharks.

After pulling out with a groin injury in the 28-10 loss to the Roosters, the former Dragons fullback has been named in the centres for Cronulla to take on St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium on Friday night.

With a number of fullback options at the club, Matt Moylan has been named in the No.1 jersey, with Dugan in the centres and Valentine Holmes on the wing.

James Segeyaro, after receiving a bad head knock in the loss to the Roosters, will miss the match, meaning local junior Kurt Dillon has been named to make his NRL debut in jersey No.15.

Dugan played 84 games for the Dragons, but left after an ongoing dispute of salary and his position, believing his future at the club was a fullback.

The Dragons 14-4 down at half-time to beat the Sharks 20-16 with a stiff breeze at their backs in round two.

Dugan is the State of Origin incumbent for NSW, but there are a number of contenders for this season, including Dragons’ rival Euan Aitken.

James Graham says St George Illawarra Dragons not feeling the pressure ahead of derby clash with Cronulla Sharks
  • Local Sport

Prepared: St George Illawarra forward James Graham says the Dragons will be wary of the wounded Sharks on Friday night. Picture: AAP

  • James Graham believes St George Illawarra are well equipped to handle the pressure of putting their undefeated start to the season on the line against fierce local rivals Cronulla on Friday night.

The Dragons escaped Shark Park with a come from behind 20-16 victory in round two, with the bitter rivals to meet for a second derby in just 30 days at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.

Graham has made a strong start to his career in the red V since his off season arrival from Canterbury. The England international has added much to the Dragons’ middle in the opening five weeks of the season, helping them to an unblemished 5-0 win-loss record to sit top of the NRL table.

A number of players including Graham, new halves combination Gareth Widdop and Ben Hunt, centre Euan Aitken and back-rower Jack de Belin have all enjoyed impressive starts to the season. But Graham said while pressure would continue to grow with success, their focus on the team rather than individual accolades would keep St George Illawarra in a good position.

”The pleasing thing is we’re playing well as a team. You can see some individuals are playing really well too but we’re doing it for each other. The results are obviously great. This is how any team would want to start the season,” Graham said.

“We’ve got to continue with it now. Each week the pressure is going to build the more we win. But I’m confident in this group that we can handle that pressure.”

Graham has enjoyed his change of scenery, wanting to pay back the trust shown in him by Dragons coach Paul McGregor and those that brought him to the club, feeling the need to prove himself all over again.

Each week the pressure is going to build the more we win. But I’m confident in this group that we can handle that pressure.

    Dragons prop James Graham
Despite Cronulla’s indifferent start that has seen them lose three of their opening five matches to leave the 2016 premiers in 11th place, Graham is adamant the Dragons won’t be taking their nearest geographical rivals lightly.

“They came to play [in round two] and they always do. They’re a quality team,” he said.

“They might have had a bit of a reshuffle there but their forwards are always up for a big game and some outside backs that carry the ball with a lot of venom.

“So it’s going to be a tough one for us.”

Latimore says Sharks should keep Moylan at fullback

St George Illawarra forward Jeremy Latimore believes Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan should stick with Matt Moylan at fullback for Friday night's derby at WIN Stadium.

Latimore, who played for the Sharks last season and spent four seasons with Moylan at the Panthers, said his former teammate was one of the best fullbacks in the Telstra Premiership and Flanagan had the option of Trent Hodkinson at five-eighth.

Hodkinson has played in the halves with Chad Townsend for the past three matches, with Moylan sidelined for two of those and returning from injury at fullback last Friday night after the late withdrawal of Josh Dugan.

The former Panthers captain was the third fullback used by the Sharks in the opening five rounds and with Dugan expected back for the match against his former Dragons teammates, Flanagan faces a selection dilemma.

''They've had a bit of change in their spine, which makes it hard for them to get consistency in the way they are playing,'' Latimore said.

''Personally, I like the spine they have got now. I reckon it is the best with Matt at the back.

''I played with him for a number of years at Penrith and he is great at the back, and Hodko seems to be doing a good job in the halves to take some pressure off Chad.''

After their best start to a season since the formation of the St George Illawarra joint venture in 1999, the Dragons have no selection issues and coach Paul McGregor has been able to keep the same starting line-up in each of their five wins.

The interchange bench has also remained virtually unchanged, with Hame Sele replacing Latimore in the round-three defeat of Gold Coast Titans, while Leeson Ah Mau, Kurt Mann and Luciano Leilua have played every game.

With the club's Intrust Super Premiership team also winning their last three matches, Latimore said the competition for places from the likes of Sele, Jacob Host and Blake Lawrie was keeping him on his toes.

''You are a bad game or two away from getting dropped to reserve grade so it does help you and inspire you each week,'' he said.

''Even out on the training paddock no one is taking a backward step, so that is good.''

With no injuries, Mann has not been needed for his utility value and has been playing out of position in the middle as a prop or lock.

''It's showing a lot of faith to play someone my size in the middle having never played there before. I'm really happy to have that opportunity,'' Mann said.

''Everyone's playing out of their skin so it's hard to push for a starting spot because the team's playing such good footy.''

You've misunderstood me OT.

The original criticism of Mary seemed to be that he continually picked players who he thought would win.

I thought that was a strange criticism.

That's what I don't understand about bench spots?
You name a 21, why can't at the start of the season you explain to those players that numbers 16/17 are rotational.
You pick your strongest 1-15 and use the last two spots to give the young guys a go in first grade.
LAM and Mann stay ( as the bench utility) and you rotate Latimiore, Luc, Host, Sele, Kerr and Lawrie week after week.
It gives every player valuable experience and also dosnt destroy thier confidence if they don't play.

I originally thought Host should come in and move Sims to bench prop, but With Sims in such good form I don’t think that’s the right call at the moment. So if you select both then Sele is 2nd bench prop, which i like, but then Host is going to get max 15-20 either in the middle or giving Sims a rest. So the question is what’s better for team - Host playing 80 in his best position in ISP, or getting limited minutes, quite possibly in the middle which isn’t the best use of him. I’m open to convincing but lean towards having him stay in ISP and giving Kerr or Lawrie that 15-20 in the middle. Which is moot as Latimore is going to be there though. So to sum up - don’t know.

At this stage of his career, I don’t think Host brings much value from the bench unless the intention is to rotate one or both backrowers. Him spending any time in the middle is silly and detrimental to the team (compared to Sele or even Latimore) and he doesn’t need a token 10 minutes for development. He either plays long minutes on the edge or he bides his time in ISP. I just hope we keep him.

Let me put it this way.
Do you think the coach really uses his younger players?
Sele won't get many minutes.
Host won't get a look.
Lawrie hasn't been considered.
Sure he is picking the strongest team, but lets be honest, Latimore was bought as a depth player on a one year deal yet he is keeping out a young player who is here for longer term.
Do you think the side would be less stronger without Latimore and have 2 younger playrrs there?
Jack Bird left the club because they could not guarentee him a start in NRL.
With the coach stuffing around all these young players, don't be surprised if they don't consider the same.

Damn it. Clune has been a little gun for this team.
