Round three vs The Storm

And he had those stops on Kenny Bromich where he read it a few times and jammed on him. I think his talent level could be up there with Burtons tbh, if his vision and passing holds up at fullback whenever he gets a chance then he is going to be a special player cause he has the freakish speed and skills.

Look at the size difference between him and Bromwich. Didn't bother him at all.

Staines: 184cm, 87kg

Bromwich: 183cm, 105kg

Sivo: 186cm, 105kg

JAC: 183cm, 88kg.

He competed with the guys 20kg heavier without issue and is the same size as a top class rep winger.

I think it's been demonstrated enough now haha. Yeah I'm thorough.

I like Naden and wanted him to replace Mansour last year. I wouldn't argue with Naden to wing and Staines to fullback honestly BUT the discussion about Staines physicality should be sorted now if we aren't using emotion.

We continue to be a very thoroughly good team. We were out enthused and muscled for most the first half. Combined with the grand final starting performance and it seems like a recurring issue. The whole team was being outplayed but I think JFH carries the biggest burden as the pack leader to fix it, especially considering Spencer did when he came on.

Melbourne push the ten metres better than any side, the whole defensive line stands offside for the first 2 tackles of every set and they kill the momentum. Its takes us time to adjust next time we play them we should prepare like they will be 5 metres offside the whole game.

For now but I ask again how many small wingers are there in the comp?

His size is not an issue. Looking at Westies post he is very similar sized to JAC who is a rep winger. 1cm taller and 1kg lighter. He has similar speed as JAC and I think he will prove to have more skill and vision than JAC. The kid is fine, there has been no signs that he isnt up to it.

You just seem to be looking for these reasons he cant do it rather than just judging him on what he actually does.

Staines isn’t in the team for his physicality, he’s there for his raw speed and footy brain.

He’ll get better with every game, I’ve no doubt that by the end of the year, he will have formed a killer combination with Momo on the right.

Staines has proven himself physically in defence IMO. Out wide he's more likely to miss tackles. But he has shown he's strong enough to defend some big boys.

Im sure he will get steamrolled on occassion. But no more often than Mansour was beaten on pace alone really. Staines speed was an asset against Storm. Fox scores off that kick if Naden or Mansour were on the wing. Although if Staines were at fullback he could've likely saved the try still.

We just need to get set plays working for him like they had last year. Get him space and he will show his value to the team.

The discussion about physicality is happening because he got dominated badly and repeatedly when bringing the ball out of our end. Suggesting he shouldn't be in the team is pretty extreme, but let's not pretend that isn't a problem or something he doesn't need to work on.

As Westy says though, it's not a size thing. More likely a technique he hasn't had to learn at lower levels of the game that will come to him in time. He doesn't need to be To'o level either as he has considerable assets in the other areas of his game. As many here have said, most wingers probably don't score his try and they definitely don't stop JAC from scoring in that situation.

Charlie is the only player in the comp who stops that JAC try.

He’s not a better ball runner than latrell or turbo or teddy. Probably not pap either or rts.

Yeah I am with you on that. People seem to base their assessments of a good runner on tackle breaks. Whilst it is a good indicator some people seem to discount line breaks. The fullbacks that you mentioned all seem to clean break the line more - you don't make as many tackle breaks if you step someone or run right around them or brush through a single attempted tackle then speed off untouched.

Edwards is a bit more of a pin ball - goes into the teeth of the defense and goes from tackle break to tackle break making metres but getting slowed down doing it.

Yeah Edwards breaks tackles and gets post contact metres as good as any fullback but at their best guys like Teddy, Turbo, Latrell and one or two others get linebreaks for fun, some of the best ball runners in the comp play fullback.
