Yes not everyone likes travel.

Some are closed minded and just like home so will never leave. Some just get sick of it over time- not unusual for someone like Rogers to grow weary of it over time. It is also not surprising that after 6 weeks in hotels that you want to get home though I’m sure the fact that most of the RLWC was played in grim north of England was a factor there. I’m sure the 2025 competition in France will be far more appealing.

There’s a distinction though of course between normal business travel and living somewhere else.

Arguing that getting the chance to work and travel isn’t appealing to many is silly.
Living out of a suitcase isn't the draw they think it is

Uh Toronto were selling out some of their games in the championship

had covid not struck all their super league games wouldve sod out

and it appears the popularity of union in France isn’t so good

yeh that’s the thing about France its reliant upon a rich sugar daddy to keep it going.

the nrl is paying its players from recurring income the game generates
Are you suggesting that SBW was a superstar on the level he was in Sydney in Toronto? f**k me. 🤣🤣🤣

Good stuff using a 6 year article

And what you lot forget- there is money flowing down from International games and European games too.

Yeh that’s why two English clubs went broke and two more could follow and why they have debts of 300 million pounds

Good one champ

how is a crowd average of 27k the envy of other rugby clubs ?

Why are you talking about English clubs when we were talking about France? :D

Plenty of people hate the travel as love it.
Mat Rogers cited the travel as the main reason he returned to league.
Haas missed the RLWC because he didn't want to be away from his family.
Yeo said most of the Kangaroos were counting down the days until they could return home.

But then there are players like Maloney who have been playing almost for free in to stay in France.

That’s the point I was making.

Some people would love the idea of living and travelling overseas. Some people wouldn’t. None of those decisions are wrong but people are attracted to different things. It is not that hard to understand.

The post was about both but sure the less said about English clubs the better (it was to show the money isn’t trickling down to English clubs by the way)

did you know the French tv deal is 65 percent less than the nrls ? (185 mill vs 430 mill)

in a nation close to 3 times the size of Australia

with a crowd average 20 percent higher

maybe now you will get it

They went for money not for the chance to play overseas

Did they definitely or are you just presupposing based on your own prejudices. I don’t pretend to know what drives people to make the decisions that they do. Money might help sway them but it might only be one factor. They might have cultural links to another country. Their partner might want to move. They might have travelled somewhere and thought I want to live here. They might absolutely hate living in Sydney for example and want to escape.

I’ll give you a different perspective so perhaps you can understand or empathise with another viewpoint. If somebody gave me a million dollars per year and gave me the choice of living in Gosford/Campbelltown/Penrith or living in certain parts of any one of France/Spain/Greece/Italy/GermanyJapan, I’m choosing the latter every day of the week and probably twice on Sunday.

Living in Western Sydney doesn’t interest me at all. Now there’s nothing wrong with those places but they just don’t interest me. Same as you moving overseas or moving out of Sydney doesn’t interest you.

Your post was about the Top 14 dying and you used an article from 6 years ago ffs.

On turnover, what a laugh. On top of the Top 14 tv revenue there is European tv rights €30m per season), FFR distributions along with corporate sponsorships which are significant. Toulouse have the likes of Airbus in their city pouring money into them- tv only accounts for 20% of revenue in Top 14 which is significantly less than the NRL.

Wow those European tv rights are massive lmao

I guess the best way to tell how well the nrl is doing is an Irish rugby union fan feels the need to try and big it up on an Aussie league forum

if you get a chance try and watch the games tomorrow. Dragons play the roosters and warriors vs the storm

enjoy

@Colk guess he wants to travel now ?

Probably helps. That doesn’t refute my point though does it?

Unless you are suggesting that the million or so Australians living and working overseas are doing it because they are getting paid exorbitant amounts of money. That’s not the case though is it?

Assuming NRL clubs have a cap of 17 to 20m in 2027 who else would come close to that ?
Super Rugby is currently at 5m ? English Rugby had a slightly higher cap than us but have recently pulled that down with the comp struggling financially.
I'm not sure what Top 14 and Japan's caps would be, but they'd currently be the highest?

Assuming the NRL has the largest cap we'd easily be able to keep our players, and who knows.. maybe a club could offer Ardi Suva enough coin to give league a go.
It depends on the currency conversion at the time but mainly Top 14 and Japan.

The other thing to consider is that international club rugby tournaments are becoming fractured over salary cap differences between nations. There’s a lot of game results in those tournaments that can be predicted simply by looking at which team comes from a country with the higher salary cap. The obvious example is the dominance of Leinster. That in turn brings down audience interest.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they either brought in universal salary caps or those comps fractured so countries only play against others with similar sized caps and can actually have a chance at winning a comp for a change.

Also btw the biggest setback to living overseas in these circumstances/situations is having to play Rugby Union. That’s a massive drawback/negative.

I’m just commenting on the idea of living overseas and how it would be attractive to some.

Now to be fair it’s also a lot less work for players as they rarely see the ball in a game.

these are actual fans, not disinterested people elbow deep in their KFC bucket occasionnaly singing Sweet Caroline

Anyway NRL players wouldn't earn big money in the Top14 like SBW & al. used to, everything goes to homegrown players these days

Top 14 broadcast rights 113m euro a year. (186m Aud a year)
Top 14 Average crowd to date 2023 (14k)
Top 14 2022 Total aggregate viewership 34m

NRL broadcasts rights (420m Aud a year.)
NRL average crowd to date 2023 (19.3k)
Total revenue in 2023 between 650m-670m
NRL premiership 2022 Total aggregate viewership 134m + Origin 9.5m + All stars and rep round 2.5m + NZ Sky 5-7m

Those international are not going to close the gap in revenue in any meaningful way.

The NRL has quite the lead over the leading Union competition in France.
