Rugby wouldn't be the force it is today in France, league was thier number 2 sport ( behind soccer ) until all league players were forced to play Union under the Vichy government.

By some miracle League ( or Rugby 13 as the French call it ) is still strong in the South East, Catalans are ontop of the Super League and Toulouse are a few wins away from being promoted into the Super League

in six years League went from nothing to being bigger than union and on the way to total dominance in terms of rugby codes

First time being knocked out in the pool stage

And to top it off they are 75m in debt.
