That doesn’t make what he said anymore palatable. I have also heard it before. It’s a dumb idea and it will remain a dumb idea for quite a while
Wasn't suggesting that it does, just pointing out that Sheedy's opinion was old news.

Many AFL types were pushing for Newcastle or a 3rd NSW side to be the 19th or 20th side until the Tasmanian government forced the AFL's hand and pushed their expansion plans forward. Most have realised that another NSW side is a no go for the 20th team given the timeframe and shifted to supporting the NT, which is just as stupid for different reasons.

Outside the PNG idea, it is the dumbest idea I’ve seen. There is no infrastructure here for an AFL side and that is just the starting point. Completely arrogant or ignorant whatever adjective you want to use.

Meh.

A Newcastle or third Sydney side might have been feasible when they were talking about them entering the league in the 2040s or 50s, but there's no chance now that it'd need to launch within the next decade. The NT is expensive pie in the sky nonsense no matter the timeframe, so if anything their ideas are getting worse.

If the Tasmanian side get's up (and that's still a big if), the 20th team will need to enter the league in the mid 2030s at the latest. As such their only realistic options will be a third Perth side, Canberra, or maybe a third Adelaide side but that's stretching it.

The Hunter has about 750k people. About 1.1 million if you include the lower Central Coast.

Darwin is 150k. Says it all really.

League playing numbers between the Central Coast and Newcastle are huge. The idea you could put a flogball team there is as silly as putting one in Western Sydney ……
The AFL can't afford another midgets or suns club, and cost they around $60 million a year just to keep them treading water.
They are both financial blackholes for Vicky Kicky house, and will never ever become anywhere near being viable.
The accountants at Vicky Kicky house must pull their hair out when they see the accounts from both clubs every year.
