Rugby League banned in Russia

It's hard to imagine that RU wouldn't be implicated somehow. Otherwise it just wouldn't make sense. Why ban a sport, and such a minor one at that?

Unfortunately I would be surprised if there isn't very little anyone in the RLIF, RLEF or UKRLG could do about this, especially now.

Yeah either the RU or some other party with something to gain from RL being banned.

Sounds like your stock standard "RU is the only rugby" move to me.

I know this has been suggested a million times, but it'd be quite a bit harder for the Unions to pull these kinds of stunts if we changed the name of RL to something else, maybe we should officially change the name of the sport to just League, so on paper at least we aren't a rugby code.

How you'd go about officially changing the name I don't know.

Sorry, this is best I can do, I'll keep working on it.

At the Ministry of Sports Federation of Russia we have received information about holding competitions in the Russian Federation in violation of laws established by the legislation in the Russian Federation covering physical training in sport, in particular, carried out as a competetive activity, unrecognized sports in the Russian Register of Sports (VRVS) as well as violation of safety requirements. In addition, organisation of sporting events not providing required medical monitoring and timely medical care to competitors, thereby increasing the risks and related threat to the life and health of athletes with significant injuries.

In order to remedy the situation, we have instructed executive authorities of the Russian Federation in the field of physical Culture and Sports to take monitoring trap measures targeting International and national sporting events within the territory of the Russian Federation in accordance with legislation of the Russian Federation in the sphere of physical culture and sports.

Including the need to provide verification of being a sport who has obtained VRVS state accreditation in being a suitable "physicultural-sporting" organisation to conduct these competitions, as well as in the implementation of measures in correct medical support and safety of participants, including compliance with requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation regarding regulatory minimum allowable age of competition.

This led to the authorities asking charge managing executive authorities of the Russian Federation in the field of Physical Culture and Sports to inform us of any cases of violation of the Russian Federation legislative requirements in the sphere of culture and sport in the organisation and carrying out of sports events and take measures to eliminate them.

Let's not jump to conclusions. There is a good chance that some laws were violated, as is usually the case at any organised sporting event anywhere in the world. The real question is why does this result in an immediate ban (even though such a thing is not explicitly mentioned in the letter) of an entire sport, and who tipped off the appropriate authorities (knowing that they have every right to tip them off)?

I gather that the action was taken after the recent Russia-Serbia game in the Euro Cup. I'm guessing some sort of law wasn't respected and someone involved with union has jumped on the occasion, in cohorts with the minister or the usual suspects in power, to give league yet another wallop in the guts just when they seem to be making some progress. Of course, as a law was technically broken, the Russians have little to no recourse in fighting the ruling.

Too early to tell at this stage if RU is involved. the knee-jerk reaction is to assume they are.

At this stage it appears to be something to do with player health and safety.

This is a good enough reason to suspend the game imo, until they can set up protocols etc that would be acceptable.

But in my view its not enough to ban it outright.

The big question now is, will the RLIF do anything?

I agree, though it is strange that they would be suddenly pulled up for this and banned completely, especially in a place like Russia. It's a bit like a street food vendor in Bangkok being hauled in and tortured for poor hygiene.

I have been thinking this for a while. I need tocall it league for non RL fans to know which sport I am talking about anyway.

If it is really a medical /health issue I can see where the Govt is coming from.We would not allow games to proceed here I would imagine.

Then again the shadow of ru and its history of dirty tricks, looms in the background.
