South Sydney coach Jason Taylor says his side’s sole focus will be on winning rather than carrying the burden of WA’s rugby league expectations when the Rabbitohs clash with Melbourne Storm in Perth tonight.
The Rabbitohs enter the match at Members Equity Stadium sitting three points adrift of the top eight and are coming off a bruising 46-12 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville last Saturday.
The Storm have arrived in Perth in contrasting form, having smashed the Broncos 48-4 in the previous round to be sitting in fifth spot.
Taylor said yesterday the Rabbitohs would concentrate on recapturing good form ahead of putting on a spectacle for Perth fans.
“We’ve got enough to worry about over and above putting pressure on ourselves that we’ve got to play well because of the future of the game in Western Australia,” he said.
“I’m really supportive of what the WARL is doing and we really want to get a bit of a foothold here in Perth and this game is important for us but when it’s all said and done it’s another game and that’s how we’re approaching it.”
South Sydney yesterday predicted the match would be a sell-out — a result that would be a massive boost to the WARL’s plans to have a Perth side in the NRL in 2013.
