#origin > #stateoforigin for obvious reasons

Looking at it from a worldwide sense and not a sense where its easier to fit words in for us fans.

If on the worldwide trend list, people in countries that don't know what the hell "State of Origin" is they may google it to find out and they will find unlimited information on it.

If they do the same thing with "Origin" they are going to be well off the pace.

Bumpity bump bump.

As evidenced by this thread, LU pioneered Twitter hashtags back in 2011. Since then, the NRL have slowly picked them up and used them.

After an agreed format was used over four seasons, they've suddenly gone bonkers and changed a very simple system - #NRLBriSou - to a long system of #NRLBroncosSouths. Why? Apparently branding. Never mind it almost doubles the length of the tags and removes precious characters from use...

(Yes - not everyone gives a shit about hashtags but there's a lot of things on this forum people don't give a shit about so nerrrr.)

My guess it's because Broncos is less characters than Brisbane like Souths is less than Bunnies, but it's pretty stupid when you only had 10 character hashtags out of 140 characters per tweet

It was initially #NRLBroncosRabbitohs when they released the draw, presumably shortening Rabbitohs to Souths, WestsTigers to Tigers and SeaEagles to Manly is a response to those claiming they're too long.

I can understand both sides of the argument. What's the point in getting a hashtag trending when people who aren't fans of the sport have no idea what is means.

As a non AFL fan, seeing a trend like #AFLSwansCrows would make more of an impact on me than #AFLSydAdl

I guess that's what they're aiming at.

And some teams really don't work well as a 3 letter abbreviation, ie. Cby vs Cbr vs Can; Sti vs Stg for saints; Sou ... Not very user friendly

For at least 5 of the 8 games, the tags generally match what Fox Sports puts on screen though?

Clearly people stuck with what they're used to

I wonder if any thought was given to further shortenings?

There have been a few subtle changes to the longer named teams as we know there's still value placed on keeping hashtags as short as possible, while ensuring they're relevant. Because of that, Rabbitohs will be "Souths", SeaEagles becomes "Manly" and WestsTigers uses just the mascot, "Tigers".

Rabbitohs - 9 characters
SeaEagles - 9 characters
Bulldogs - 8 characters
Warriors - 8 characters
Panthers - 8 characters
Roosters - 8 characters

I agree with the article, but I think for consistency, for the sake of one extra character (compared to the 8 character names they are happy with), they should have just left Rabbitohs and SeaEagles. That way no one would have to remember the two exceptions to the rule.
