In the end 4,100 uses of the new hashtag beat 2,800 of the old one.

A further 343 used the #NRLBroncosRabbitohs one which was the original one the NRL put out with the draw last season.

Even with the new tag gaining the majority I think it's a loss for the NRL's new style, as a huge proportion of people stuck with the old.

Twitter do ratings now, which is why the NRL are so keen for everyone to adopt the same official hashtag, I personally think the new one is better because it is clearer and instantly recognisable, a couple extra characters aren't a big deal.

You have to expect there to be some users continuing to use the old hashtags for a while yet. But the NRL's reasoning for the change is solid and I think they made the right decision

The reasoning is horrible IMO, when weighed against additional space and the inconsistency between certain clubs.

The system wasn't broke and didn't need fixing.

It's good to see common sense has prevailed and more importantly that it's already being taken up pretty quickly in the first round.

Just noticed that the match day threads here have the old style in the banners. Wouldn't it be better to have the official one?

Nope, the banners are tied to the website's live updates which like the LU twitter will continue to use the old ones.

Doesn't that mean that LU users are being given the wrong hashtag to use? If LU gave the correct hashtag we wouldn't have so many using the old one

But timmah likes the old ones because he invented them, so it's better to promote the old ones and then be outraged people are still using them

It does seem rather childish by LU to not use the official match day hashtag

The NRL themselves have encouraged fans to use whichever they like. For LU's purposes, there are several reasons the old ones work better.

Outrage really doesn't have a whole lot to do with it tbh.

Nothing to do with letting go or a big deal either. They don't fit in our update console, they give less space to tweet actual content, and they're inconsistent. We're sticking with the old ones - and I have the backing of the entire LU team who gives up their own time to be part of what we do.
