Why would someone apologise to the internet? I'm not sure I am following.

Well, if Pou Pou and I were in love, we wouldn't ever have to say sorry to each other (according to Ali McGraw). So, for example, if I was Ryan and Pou Pou was Ali (Jenny was her character's name). If Pou Pou was Jenny and she said "I reckon there's no one more needy and with less ability than the mentally ill" (knowing that poor Ryan was a mental health clinician and that he had had a brother who was mentally ill and drowned in the surf at Palm Beach), then Jenny (Pou Pou) wouldn't need to say sorry. Because they are in love, you see? I know, it was a silly movie. I know Pou Pou and I aren't in love (well, I'm not), but I'm just wondering if the internet has a similar rule. Is it justified for Jenny (Pou Pou) to say "Oh, don't be silly, Ryan; we're on the internet, I don't need to say I'm sorry"?

I think the main reason I don't have to say I'm sorry is because I'm not, lingard.

I never intended to disrespect your brother, and I'm certain I haven't. I believe you have no right to take offence at my comment, and so I don't care that you have.

Whatsmore, I believe my comment was demonstrably true. In the context of the Marxist slogan in question, they have limited ability to contribute, and greater than average need for a share of the resources provided by the socialist polity. The only person with less ability and more need would be a man with no arms, no legs and an arts degree.

Ok, you lost me when you mentioned Love Story, Ryan and Ali.

So the internet and love are the keys to never having to say you're sorry. Is that your point?

So is Pou Pou the internet, or is Lingard? I am struggling to keep up.

No, no, no. You have to stay focussed. My name is Ryan and his name is Jenny. Does that clear it up for you? I drive an old MG and wear scarves and attend Harvard University. She flounces around in tight sweaters and says "Love means never having to say you're sorry" and "sitting in an MG means you don't have to follow the normal rules of social intercourse", and other such things. Or was that another movie? Might have been King Kong.

Ah yes, King Kong. I've seen that one. It all makes sense now.

You can back-peddle now, but that comment was meant as a gee-up, it was meant to be controversial, and it was offensive. I guess the difference between you and me is: if I said something that you genuinely found offensive - and you gave me reasons why - then I would apologise to you. If I felt strongly enough about what I'd said, then I might not take it back - but I would apologise for offending you. You can't or you won't; end of story.

Firstly, I'm as much of an arsehole in real life as I am here. Plenty of people can validate that, too.

Secondly, I'm sorry about your brother, lingard, but that in no way relates to the validity of statements such as "Heaps of people claiming mental illness are full of shit" etc. You're simply engaging your subjective experience, which no doubt is extremely sad and greatly affected you. Once again, I'm sorry to hear about it but it's not relevant to mental illness and the exploitation of the condition, in general.

Firstly, I'm glad to hear you're an arsehole in real life: I think it's silly to put on an act for the internet.
Secondly, thank you.
Thirdly, I wasn't offended by that particular statement - we were side-tracked into talking about DSP fraud by Pou Pou, because that's what he does when he's challenged about anything or when he senses he might be wrong about something, or when he knows he's discussing a topic he knows nothing about - he side-tracks the issue rather than debating it (which is why he has never won an argument on this site and probably never will.) My only objective was to see if this prick had the common decency to apologise to me for a couple of comments he made which did offend me (and I gave clear reasons why). I guess I found out the answer to that.
Fourthly: as I've tried to point out, the exploitation of mental illness does not happen as much (anywhere near as much) as people seem to think. I may not be the absolute last authority on the subject, but I think I have more credentials than most on here when I make those comments. Of course, if you don't believe me, that's your prerogative. But, at least do a bit of research before you go thinking that every man and his dog is feigning mental illness".

Well as long as DSP fraud keeps paying your bills, lingard, you will keep defending it.

That's just life I guess.

It's at times like this that I remember why you are such a dickhead Pou. You love nothing more then to agitate and provoke people into prolonged arguments, that could be resolved with far less angst should you agree to disagree. You are without a doubt one of the most self centred posters here, with your bombardment of every thread with lengthy posts containing copious amounts of information and statistics, which serve no other purpose other then to stroke your own ego. Rant over.
