Cleary is the best 7 in the nrl this season. Why would the Panthers move him to 9 in 2 years just to play Burton in the halves?
It would never ever happen.

To add to that point look at the graveyard of young halves that come into weak teams after dominating lower grades and get dropped very quickly. How is Ash Taylor going on his $1m a season? Clubs want to see more before they give out that cash.
Tedesco
Ponga
Fifita
Possibly Cam Smith ( If he plays on)
all signed new deals on $1m a year all aren't halves. So there is no rule that says only halves can get a huge payday
To get that money he needs to play SOO, Finals or both. He won't do that at the Dogs for the next couple of seasons atleast.
So I don't see how not signing a 2 year extension here ie not better for him long term
Mr 10% manager will no doubt do what is best for his back pocket rather than what is best for the player

Canterbury have had a heap over the last few years, dragons, knights and NZ also.
Coming through the ranks at a top team like the storm or Penrith can get you a big contract quicker, like Nikorima or Croft. They may not be shining again behind poor forwards but they are getting paid well.
I completely agree, he probably has a lot more talent than a lot of those other halves and a lot more options. The big difference is most of those halves didn’t have options. Because of Burton’s size, he has options for playing other positions in his future. He could move to the backrow, maybe centre or maybe fullback.

My point was that taking up a high priced contract with a bad club could be detrimental to his career.
He would have to shoulder a lot more responsibility and will have to provide results instantly.
If he stays with us, he may end up better off in the long run, even if it’s in a different position.
The point is though, if he can't get a spot at 1/2, 5/8 or fullback we don't want to pay big money to keep him as we have better players in those positions already.I tend to think he’ll only stay here in the long term if he can crack a major position like 5/8 or fullback. We probably have a chance of keeping him for another year or two, but if he hasn’t cemented a spine position by then it’ll only be natural for him to move on.

Sounds like a shit show but it is from the scumf**ks at the TeleThere was a little article in the Tele yesterday about the dogs board room dramas making managers reluctant to send players there. The pub guy visiting our boys parents is threatening to walk out and I think the rebel part of the board want him gone. The pub guy hasn’t actually paid any money to the dogs and he wants to get involved in player signing etc the place has serous dramas Barrett must be watching on in horror.
