The second most try assists in the NRL and just turned the 2 x premiers semi final defence inside out like a tube sock on laundry day and you think $500k? Allegedly, Hunt is on $1m, Milford $800k DCE, $1m. He must be worth at least $750k.
Not to us he's not. In this era you can't have two superstar halves. The cap simply doesn't allow it

The cap is going down, rumoured to be around a 10% drop. 500k I think would be a fair offer for someone only in their first full season of FG, maybe 550k. We also need to consider we already have one very highly paid spine player. You see what happens with clubs like St George, Manly, Cronulla etc that have several highly paid players in their spines.

That said I should’ve phrased my post better. Ie. How much can/should we pay Luai? It’s definitely possible he gets offers around 700k. From what I can gather he absolutely loves the place, he’s waited patiently to get his chance so he might be prepared to stay here for a little less.

It's more % of the total salary cap rather than the $$$ per year. As @herbert henry1908 said the cap is going down.

But it does. Smith, Munster. Pearce, Ponga. Moses, Gutherson. Reynolds, Walker. Every good team has at least two superstars in their spine. Melbourne have dominated for years by rotating out journeymen around a spine they heavily invest in. The "big three". In fact you could argue that Reynolds, Walker, Cook and Mitchell makes four superstars at South's. What you can't do is overpay for forwards unless they are so good they can win you a competition.

It depends how much you pay them. Clubs like Sharks, Dragons & Manly have overpaid for their spine.

We’ve already got a $1 million player, so we need to be careful about how much we pay the next guys. Especially with the cap going down.

Maybe there is room to pay Luai $700k, but I doubt it with all the players we have to re-sign for 2022.

This quote, this was Gus' vision when he came here. Create a club kids want to stay at. Staines has almost certainly turned down bigger money and a better chance to start to stay here.

“There's such a special bond that all the players and staff have here. It feels like a big family.

"Wherever I can fit into this team moving forward, I'll play, because I just want to be a part of it."

Well done to the club, its been a long road from the elliot days but its starting to feel like we made it finally.
