f**k me, shafting Edwards for Laurie who has one game under his belt, c'mooooon. Edwards is an integral part of our side. His stability & positioning at the back balances out some of the more erratic players within our squad. We have a great mix. The 'all attack' mentality / selection policy may look great on paper but how many times has it actually won a premiership?

2003

Seriously, though. I don’t think he was saying edwards should be shafted, just that we shouldn’t overpay. Edwards has had a very good season, but I think you need to be realistic about his monetary value. His ceiling as a player isn’t super high, he’s an all effort type of guy. Plus the fact we have several FB options puts us in a strong bargaining position.

I didnt say to shaft him at all relax Martie. Realistically he is the least important member of our spine and his form has been great, if he gets a big offer I think we are well stocked with potential fullbacks, give Edwards a value offer and see what happens.

From today's SMH:

If South Sydney had their way, Jarome Luai would be wearing Cody Walker's No.6 jersey.

The past two times the Penrith playmaker was off contract, the Rabbitohs couldn't phone Luai's agent quick enough. Whether it was former Souths supremo Shane Richardson or football manager Mark Ellison, the red and green carpet was rolled out each time for Luai at Redfern. "Richo and Mark Ellison, probably over a period of two windows, enquired about Jarome," said his agent, Darryl Mather.
"Shane was doing work for the New Zealand Rugby League and Jarome was the captain of the Junior Kiwis at a game in Canberra. He really took Richo's eye on and off the field.

"Mark Ellison has loved Jarome's footy and backed it up with a few calls: ‘Can we get Luai?'

"Richo and Mark probably rang me about five or six times combined. Richo was really hot to trot."

Penrith, however, knew Luai was a keeper. When Mather raised Souths' interest with former Panthers supremo Phil Gould, the message was clear: Don't even entertain the thought of going elsewhere, we have big plans for him.

And so it has come to pass. Luai has turned into every bit the player the Panthers and Rabbitohs predicted he would become. The livewire five-eighth has brought out the best in not only himself but great mate and halves partner Nathan Cleary, who is widely tipped to take out the Dally M Medal.

Things have also worked out for Walker. A late bloomer who only made his NRL debut at the age of 26, Walker has been making up for lost time. His sublime form during the past six weeks has shot him back into State of Origin calculations.

It appears Walker's past and future are inextricably linked to the Penrith halves. Walker made his Blues debut alongside Cleary and will face him and Luai on the weekend with a view to reuniting with the Penrith halfback at Origin level.
Luai cheekily suggested this week that it was time for the younger Panthers halves to show up their more season counterparts.

"We'll have to wait and see," Walker said with a grin when told about the comments. "I'm not into personal battles, it's just about us going out there and doing the job. If we focus on one individual, the other side of the field will hurt you.

"We understand that they've got strike all over the park. Jarome Luai is in career-best form. He's had a fantastic year and you've also got Stephen Crichton on that left edge, on the other side [Liam] Martin and Brent Naden and Nathan Cleary.

"If you focus on one particular area of their attack or their game, you miss out on stopping the other guys in their team."

Walker is also acutely aware what Cleary is capable of.

"He's obviously got a great kicking game, he's got great energy," Walker said. "He's a great defender, he's been a great leader of their side this year. He's playing on the ball more than he has in previous years, that's a big indicator to us where the ball is going to go.

"Off the field, he's a great guy. I roomed with him in Origin. I only played one game with him – I don't really know his game inside out, but he's a great player. He's had a fantastic year."

So too has Luai, who never saw himself playing anywhere but at the foot of the mountains.

"The boy just loves the Penrith badge and I knew he didn't want to be anywhere else," Mather said.

"Jarome was very patient when James Maloney was there, he took on everything in the right way.

"Not once did he ever say he wanted to look elsewhere ever. He was very patient.

"He understood the process he had to go through to get to where he is now."

The question is where do they fit him in. Very likely they'll want someone with his speed and skills in the 17 after another pre-season. The obvious answer is wing but To'o is obviously a starter and no one can fault Mansour for his improvement this year.

Easy, pension of Mansour.

He’ll take Mansour’s spot.

Mansour only has a year to go, are they really going to re-sign him with Staines on the books? If I was Josh I’d be trying to parlay this year into a 3 year deal somewhere, but he’s probably only a year to year prospect with us.

This wont be popular but if Naden is getting an offer from the storm id let him take it and if Edwards gets a big offer this November id lowball him a little bit and if he takes it great, we got a good deal, if he leaves then Id put Laurie in his spot next year, Staines on Mansour 's wing and Burton at right centre. If they can defend together that back line has so many points in it.

Need longer to see where Burton sits as a centre. I'd be fast tracking the Ball gun centre as well

If he keeps playing like he has been it would be difficult to leave him out. He also is going to be our most experienced player with Aussie Jim gone. I'm of the opinion Sauce is still going to be valuable next year.
I'm of that opinion too.

Maybe Mansour keeps his spot next year, but I don’t see us re-signing him. Unless it’s on an ultra cheap deal. Staines is now under contract until end of 2023, they’re going to want to use him.

Strongly disagree.
It's all good. You're entitled to your opinion & I'm sure there will be many others who disagree with my thoughts.

It wouldnt surprise me to see Josh phased out sooner rather than later, I'm not a fan of the idea unless the replacement is absolutely bashing the door in. Hopefully we have reserves next year so that chance is possible. Until then imo Josh is on the wing outside Critta.

A few of our Ball players facing off in the Brothers v St Gregs schoolboys this week. Captain of St Gregs is a Penrith kid(Cruise Tweedie) he is in the tele today talking up Sunia Turuva from Brothers(and panthers SG Ball) as an absolute super star.

I know a lot of it is me being sentimental, but if there was ever a player that deserves to be a one club player it's Sauce. He has sacrificed plenty to stay at Penrith in the past, has been nothing but an absolute professional on & off the field. To see him in another jersey would be horrible.
I know we have to do what we have to do to keep the production line flowing & Sauce isn't versatile enough to jag a spot elsewhere on the field. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
