there;s a theory going around thta alot of clubs have freed up space and have taken a back seat view to what's happening and have decided to wait, we're apparently one of those clubs.

The Storm are reportadly over the cap by about 1.5 mill next years and as a rule of thumb would grant permission for certain players to negotiate with other clubs, the problem that Melbourne have is that the big 4 are reportadly on massive deals and as it needs to count under their cap they need to depend on other clubs to strike deals with those players than if it's under their current deals, then Melbourne will need to make up the shortfall and count it under their cap.

how I understand it..

if Cronk is on 600K next year and Parra stike up a deal worth 350K than Melbourne will still need to pay cronk 250K and count it under the cap...

it's a f**ked situation for them but it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.

That is EXACTLY how I understand it Stagger.

I don't think it's a bad situation at all though. It's a fair application of a salary cap - even to cheats. If they DECIDED to pay Cronk 600k per season, then that should count against their cap. Should someone else offer him 100k - then of course Melbourne should be on the hook for the difference - that's the way it has always been with any players whose contracts are 'shuffled' between clubs.

the REAL pain for Melbourne is going to come from guys like White/ Hoffman - guys who are paid mountains but aren't worth it - nobody is going to sign them for their full salaried amounts, so the Storm is going to be footing the bills there :)

Haha thanks for the info Stagger.

It would seem it's a bit of a tricky situation when we don't know who will be available from the storm ie do we spend our money now or do we wait and hope.

Maybe the storm won't be able to offload players that are on overs. They might just have to get rid of players who are being paid at market rate.

Oldie, can you see the possibility of Melbourne asking the NRL to exempt them from including the payouts under their cap given the situation they're in? I would disagree with it however Melbourne risk the possability of starting the 2011 season on a defecit of comp points and that wouldn't be great publicity for the NRL moving into a new season..

that's the 4.1 million dollar question??...who knows?

yeah, there is that possibility that the big 4 could still be there playing amongs a squad of park footballers and the like..

if the big 4 costs them about 2.5 mill under the cap than they would have to fit 21 players under 2 million...good luck!!

Are we still paying part of Finchys salary for next year? We could take him off their hands for free. Just pay him whatever it is we would be paying him anyway.

without able to find the article, apparently we are still paying him...

Melbourne would still need to include his sallary also...

don't think DA would look at him as an option though..

You'd have to think they would have to offlaod 2 of the big 4, i'd say Cronk and Inglis would be the 2 they let go.

I can see Inglis changing codes to be honest, weather it's the new Melbourne Union team or AFL i'm not sure but after the past week and think he would leave League in a heartbeat and I don't blame him really.

That is the problem for melbourne, if they dont loss two of their top 4 players their forward pack will get dominated week in week out and they will have little impact.

BTW Orford busted his shoulder last week, so he's unble to sign for any NRL club before 30 June.

Kris Keating has been linked to sharks for 3 years. RLW says it all but a done deal. The sharks take all our players...

Also in RLW it said something about CEO Osbourne confirming there is interest in Watts.
