there;s a theory going around thta alot of clubs have freed up space and have taken a back seat view to what's happening and have decided to wait, we're apparently one of those clubs.
The Storm are reportadly over the cap by about 1.5 mill next years and as a rule of thumb would grant permission for certain players to negotiate with other clubs, the problem that Melbourne have is that the big 4 are reportadly on massive deals and as it needs to count under their cap they need to depend on other clubs to strike deals with those players than if it's under their current deals, then Melbourne will need to make up the shortfall and count it under their cap.
how I understand it..
if Cronk is on 600K next year and Parra stike up a deal worth 350K than Melbourne will still need to pay cronk 250K and count it under the cap...
it's a f**ked situation for them but it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.
That is EXACTLY how I understand it Stagger.
I don't think it's a bad situation at all though. It's a fair application of a salary cap - even to cheats. If they DECIDED to pay Cronk 600k per season, then that should count against their cap. Should someone else offer him 100k - then of course Melbourne should be on the hook for the difference - that's the way it has always been with any players whose contracts are 'shuffled' between clubs.
the REAL pain for Melbourne is going to come from guys like White/ Hoffman - guys who are paid mountains but aren't worth it - nobody is going to sign them for their full salaried amounts, so the Storm is going to be footing the bills there
