His reputation as a player is only a grain of sand on beach as to what it takes to be a first grade coach.

I think it's worth a lot more than you'd realise, because it's his reputation as a man. Not just his reputation as a player.

Who he was as a player is who he is right now.

If it were that easy then we'd a have a lot of former players handing out their resumes for first grade coaching positions.

How do you know there isn't?

Kearney served his apprenticeship for several years in an extremely professional system, under a man considered a top-notch coach. He has continually progressed through his career, taking small steps, and he has finally achieved his goal of being head coach of an NRL club.

I think it's pretty impressive, especially considering some players retire and jump straight into coaching first grade. It rarely ends well for them.

Lol didn't realise we were mates and you knew my thoughts on the club lol. Keep lurking

yep agree, but that is the whole point who did we replace those players with ? there was no plan who we would replace them with, and it was not like we had premiership winning under 20's and reserve grade sides. Kearney never had the benefit of those players in his side, and while the players mentioned are hot and cold they definitely had class. Kearney instead of those players and the opportunity to improve the side with those players in side is left with;

Walker
Hicks
Whaitura
Aktins (who has been solid but not in Grothe's class)
McGuire (been good, but would Keating offer more?)
Webb ( Would Mateo offer more ?)

I think whatever plan there was happened to be derailed by inter clup politics and constant leaks. I don't think any recruitment strategy would have gone to plan the way the club was acting all last year.

Copied and pasted my own post because the answer to your question is there.

No way in the world should we have signed up Mateo and Inu for another 3 years on big salaries. No way.

No arguments there but if a coach has decided to let the pair go obviously there should be a plan to replace those players. Not so much Inu because Tahu, Reddy, Grothe and Burt were obviously the first 4 selected and things out of the clubs control occurred with Tahu/Grothe.

But surely if Mateo was going to be let go their had to be something in store to replace him.

He's a good man, a good bloke, a damn good player in his day, respected by all. Doesn't necessarily equate to being a great coach though

Hindy is a good man, a good bloke, a damn good player currently, respected by all. Doesn't necessarily equate to being a great coach though

He has done ok, not going to argue that. But it's baby steps. He was an assistant coach at the Storm during years of success (despite cheating). Despite their cheating I do believe they have great structures in place which enabled them to devlop talent. Whether Kearney has the ability to bring that to Parramatta only time will tell. He's trying, but not every cadet goes onto become a manager.

Mate not disagreeing with you there regarding what ever reason we didn't replace those players. But your agruement is Kearney has not improved the side from last year, and even you have agreed Kearney has not had the some players to work with then Anderson did last year.

I'm not having a go at Kearney at all. At the same time it's not Daniel Anderson's fault either. The club was a rabble off the field last season and we are paying for it on the field this year.

Actually I belive that Poo is taking about the Matthews and SG Ball players that Nolan has signed from other clubs. This will be a positive for the club ..... as long as we don't get fed the same notion that winning club championships means success.

signed a few from the Dogs who were in the grandfinal for both grades. I doubt those players were unwanted by the Dogs

I'm sure they were unwanted. The Dogs prefer to steal other clubs juniors these days, as opposed to breeding their own.

Speaking of Ando any rumours on where he may end up? Five clubs have already changed coaches this year and surprised Ando hasn't even got a mention at any of them, two of the top clubs even going with absolute rookies in Price and Griffin.

True to an extent, but do you think those players should have been let go considering the circumstances? I do personally.

Yes I definitely do. I think cutting Grothe and Tahu showed great leadership, and whoever was responsible for Inu and Mateo leaving also did very well.

Which is why he served a fairly lengthy apprenticeship.

Hindy is a good man, a good bloke, a damn good player currently, respected by all. Doesn't necessarily equate to being a great coach though

However, if Hindy had the desire to become a coach, he would be one step ahead of so many wannabes exactly because of his reputation. I dare say it would help him get an assistant's job at a big, wealthy club like Melbourne.

Those clubs promoted from within. And that's what a lot of clubs do when deciding their new head coach. It's an easy transition for the players because they know and are used to that assistant coach.
