Is a good or bad squad built in just a year or two? From what I see, it takes years of work to build a strong squad from a weak one (as Phil Gould said, it would be easier to start from scratch), and years of neglect to turn a strong squad into a shit one.

I have zero connection to 3P, though I believed we needed to improve our recruitment/retention structure back when 3P brought in Kearney, Arthur and Nolan.

I also think it's f**king childish that all you idiots are so keen to find a couple of scapegoats and blame them for everything without giving any credit. Useless, small minded merkins you are.

Everybody needs someone to blame. I blame that f**kbag Bieber. Little f**ken talentless shyte bag should be force fed broken glass.

I think he's a very talented musician, and the amount of money he makes is testament to that. Thirteen year old girls (and 55 year old sex pests) are very discerning customers.

Parramatta ‘smells like a footy club again', says Steve Sharp

Parramatta supremo Steve Sharp says the atmosphere at the surprise-packet Eels finally ‘‘smells like a footy club again’’ after hitting rock bottom with consecutive wooden spoons and interminable political turmoil.

Having seized a share of second place on the NRL ladder after six rounds and knocking off the premiers, Brad Arthur’s side are preparing to feature in one of the most anticipated matches of the season against fellow overachievers Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium on Easter Monday.

Sharp, the Eels premiership winner, who rose to the Parramatta Leagues Club chairmanship last year, said after several years of infighting and instability, from the boardroom to the dressing room, the club appeared to be finally turning the corner.

‘‘To me it just feels and smells like a footy club again,’’ Sharp said.
‘‘The players are there enjoying what they do at training; it’s not a chore any more, and they enjoy each other’s company. They’re prepared to walk through brick walls for each other and I think you could see that against the Roosters on the weekend.’’

Amid the renewed optimism there was a blow for the Eels on Monday when recruitment guru Peter Nolan – who has been an important figure in assembling the squad that is starting to realise its potential – resigned to return to former club Brisbane for family reasons.

Nolan previously spent more than a decade at the Broncos and has been a constant at the Eels during a tumultuous period since 2011, during which three coaches – Steve Kearney, Ricky Stuart and now Brad Arthur – have been in charge.

While Parramatta have been criticised for poor recruitment and retention, a number of this high-flying team – including Corey Norman, Semi Radradra, Manu Ma'u, Will Hopoate, Nathan Peats and Chris Sandow – were acquired on Nolan’s watch.

He departs as those signings are beginning to bear fruit, although not before time in halfback Sandow’s case. Sharp points to Arthur, who was only appointed in October after the board controversially backflipped on a previous vote in favour of Jason Taylor, as being responsible for getting the most out of the players.
‘‘I think it comes down to the coach and his philosophies,’’ Sharp said. "To me, Brad Arthur is a footballer and a coach rolled into one.

‘‘He did all those tough yards in the bush as a captain-coach and he worked under two great systems at Manly and Melbourne. He understands the modern science of the game, but at the same time, he understands how footballers need to feel to be successful.

‘‘Last year we were 16th, with daylight 15th, and this year we’re doing what we set out to do. We don’t want a five-year plan, we want a one-year plan and then we build a five-year plan on the back of that to make sure we sustain it.’’ :D:D (Stick that in your arse Ricky) :D:D

Sharp admits there are still ‘‘some background noises’’ at the club that ‘‘we’ve just got to try and deal with’’. They include the continuing state government investigation into the conduct of the previous management at the Eels and allegations of financial impropriety levelled against former chairman Roy Spagnolo.

Spagnolo remains chairman of the football club board, despite being suspended in October from running for a director’s seat for two years in a ruling handed down by the leagues club board.

A spokesman for the NSW Government’s Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing said their investigation into alleged breaches of gaming and liquor legislation at Parramatta Leagues Club was ongoing.

‘‘OLGR's inquiries have included the seizure of a substantial volume of documents from the club, formal interviews and have been assisted by specialist advice in regard to financial statements and reporting,’’ a spokesman said.

In early 2012 Gus said we were a couple if years away from being competitive. Not only was he right, but he wasn't covering his arse like people assumed with Kearney and Stuart's comments about five year plans.

It's all well and good to say we want a one year plan now that all the hard work is done. And at least he recognises there is a need to maintain a five year outlook to sustain what has been built here.

I watch with interest the work Toovey and Robinson are doing with the fantastic set ups they inherited, just as I'm keen to see how Arthur deals with the set up he was handed when he got here. There was still a bit of work to be done with the first grade side and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. The next step will be retention prior to round 13 (or whenever it is) and then recruitment for next year. Obviously there will be no announcements regarding junior recruitment (and probably not retention of NYC graduates either) but hopefully the Ringrose Park loiterers can keep us curious merkins informed.

It's very exciting.

I'm confused.

Does the five years start again now that Nolan is going?

Is it transferable?

Hope we took out insurance.

Dunno , maybe he will whack a copy of the plan on a coaster before he leaves . After seeing how the Broncs have gone since SK arrived I assumed it went with him .

Kearney has definitely identified that Brisbane's recruitment/retention is all f**ked up. The signing of Nolan proves they are serious about fixing it.

I can't believe they let Norman go. I understand they already had plenty of cash tied up in halves, but why sign Prince in the first place? WTF were they thinking? It f**ked everything and then they let Prince, Wallace and Norman go all at the same time anyway.

Also, too many fullbacks. And next year they'll have another one. I don't like to second guess NRL coaches but usually I can see what they're trying to do. In the Broncos' case it just looks haphazard. They also have too many quality edge forwards, meaning they either misuse Thaiday or Gillett in the middle. And because they have to play Parker as well they are basically forced to only start with one prop.

It's f**ken bullshit.

One thing is for sure. We need to spare no expense and get the best recruitment guru we can and not have another jobs for the boys dumbarse ex player take over otherwise all the good work Nolan has done could come undone after a year or 2

And when he goes to junior matches to scout the talent he ends up punching on with all the shit footy parents. He can't help himself. He loves it.

Question for people in know. Talents scouts around the country, are they aligned to clubs or the recruitment officer?
