Eels Re-Signing News

Sat 4th April, 07:30PM

The Dyldam Parramatta Eels have today announced the re-signing of outside backs John Folau, Brad Takairangi and Bureta Faraimo.

Folau and Takairangi’s new agreements will see them at the Blue and Gold for an additional two years - to the end of 2017 - with Faraimo signing for one additional season.

“It’s great for us as a club to be able to retain quality talent and build stability, which is exactly what Brad [Arthur] and his team are doing,” Eels CEO Scott Seward said.

“I look forward to seeing what our coaching staff and team achieve not only this season, but in the years to come.”

“All three players have been great for us at Parramatta, and their commitment and dedication means we’ll be seeing more of them over the next few years,” Head Coach Brad Arthur said.

“The stability is great for the players and for the club; they know they’re committed to us and we’re committed to them and they can concentrate on playing football.”

19 year-old Folau made his NRL debut in Round 3 of this season, and scored two tries in his first home game at Parramatta against the Rabbitohs.

“Johnny is big and strong and has plenty to offer with the ball, and he’s still learning his trade,” Arthur said.

“He’s a couple of games into his NRL career and the great thing is he knows that he’s got a long way to go and a lot of improvement left in him.”

Brad Takairangi, 25, joined the Eels in 2015, and has already made an impact on the side.

“Brad’s been a great addition to the team and he’s the sort of player I like - he’s got plenty of footy in him and he’s worked really hard to improve his defence,” Arthur said.

“He’s added a bit of steel to our left side, and developed a really strong combination with Corey Norman.”

24 year-old Bureta Faraimo joined the club in 2014, making a name for himself with the Wentworthville Magpies NSW Cup side, and debuting in the NRL late in the 2014 season.

“Bureta was the NSW Cup Player of the Year last season which is a massive achievement for a winger, and he’s had a few NRL games with us and has done a really good job, so when he gets his opportunity I’m sure he’ll make the most of it,” Arthur said.

Faraimo

I don't want to be overly cynical on the re-signing of Faraimo but it is hard to think of it as anything but a waste of a development spot at Wenty unless he moves into the forwards.

He was great for Wenty last year, and good in his limited NRL opportunities.

He's been less good this year but neither has Wenty in general.

Good news about Taka amd Folau, not fussed about farimo hopefully on a 2nd tier deal.

This
Except for Faraimo -> hoping its 4th tier and not second tier.
I want him to prove me wrong but I just feel he is a massive liability in defence.
Maybe he will develop into a Wenty backrower and blossom a bit from there.

One was NSW Cup player of the year from the wing, and handled first grade in limited appearances. The other top scored in under 20s.

Faraimo may be kept as a late late bloomer, allowed to slowly blossom in the lower grades and when we can't afford to keep all our top forwards thanks to the cap or a large injury list, Buretta can be brought in. It's the Eels Buretta superannuation fund.

SEA EAGLES MOVE ON FORAN, NOT DCE

Manly powerbrokers have spoken of their plan to convince Kieran Foran to change his mind about joining the Eels before the round 13 deadline - but they appear happy to let fellow half Daly Cherry-Evans head to the Gold Coast.

"No. I can't say they have," Cherry-Evans said when asked if management was in his ear about staying put. "I am quite happy with where I'm heading with my future."

"DCE" has been much maligned for how he carried out his negotiations, but you can understand him being upset after the goalposts shifted and he was offered $800,000 less than under the last year. Resolving his future has come as a relief.

"I've always enjoyed my footy, even when I was going through the process," he said. "I've just enjoyed the media stop talking about me in terms and ways that put my family and friends in an uncomfortable situation."

As for reports he was actively recruiting for the Titans, the Australian representative said: "I won't even waste my time with it, it's pure media speculation. I'm not even going to contemplate buying in about it."

Drones used in NRL training: Parramatta Eels and South Sydney Rabbitohs own flying cameras

JESSICA HALLORAN

IT’S the attack of the drones. A technological arms race is being waged between a number of NRL coaches and few are willing to talk about it — let alone admit they own one of the futuristic devices.

But it has been revealed the Parramatta Eels and the South Sydney Rabbitohs now own state-of-the-art drones.

It is also understood the Brisbane Broncos are in the process of purchasing one while the Sydney Roosters trialled one in pre-season training.

The Melbourne Storm have also experimented with one and the North Queensland Cowboys are considering a purchase.

The space-age looking machines make former Roosters’ coach Brian Smith’s cherry picker look positively primitive and have already made their way onto training paddocks in the NFL and the AFL.

With coaches always looking for an edge, those using drones now have an outright advantage over their competitors, with a whole new aerial perspective in training.

NFL teams are already using drones, with some sending out information to players’ smartphones or tablets.

The increased scrutiny has some footballers uncomfortable with the invasion.

“Some players don’t like it,” laughed one insider, saying their flaws are now too easily identifiable.
