Of the teams selected for Round 4, the following are the only backs aged 18 or 19:

Valentine Holmes
DWZ
Alex Johnston (he's actually 20 but I'll give you that one).

And it's not as if there's a stack of 20 or 21 year olds either. Have a look.

Moylan, for example, is 23

Yes he is 23 but picked for Australia that year.Last year wasnt his first year. I think he was 21 when he debut.

And forget the guys who are under 20 now, you have to include the guys who debut at 20 or less.

Throw in Johnston, DZW Ma'tuai and a heap of guys i didn't bother checking cause iv'e never heard of them them like Mann from Melbourne and heaps from canberra and warriors.
There would be 80 back ( 1-5) in the comp. My suggestion is that more than 50% debut by 20. I think if you went thru the players properly it would end up around 50/80 played first grade by age 20.

Pauli is a much better attacking player but Moeroa is a much better defender. That's why he's a first grader and Pauli isn't.

Pauli would be in ours now if he was not injured. Of course neither have reached there potential but lets not give up on Pauli right yet. He played in our side in a weak pack and straight out of under 20's.He was also asked to play 80 mins a few times due to injuries. He will develop into a very good player.

Brett Anderson, 28, is currently playing for the Northern Pride (QLD Cup). He made his NRL debut for us aged 18.

He had some pretty bad leg injuries I think.

Jordan Rankin - debuted at 16 a few years back. Struggled to cement a spot and I think is in England now

Johnson debuted after he turned 20

Was he the kid gronk questioned being a star, and the forum went into meltdown. Lmao

No that was Connor Broadhurst I think. Geeze I copped it for about a month after that. I said that players like him were like 2yo race horses. You buy 2 dozen of them and only 1 ever races in the city.

He's playing for the Burleigh Bears this year BTW. ;-)

Sure, I was replying to your statement that said there were a stacking of 18-19 years olds currently killing in first grade. It is definitely true that the average debut of the star players is lower than mid-level (or worse) players. But the good players, of course, stick around for many years.

Here is a trivia question - What is the oldest age of a player to debut who has then gone on to play State of Origin or for his country (Aus or NZ)?

went to the cowpats and got a bad leg injury, lost a bit of speed and possibly confidence when he returned, couldn't even get a run with the cowpats after that

The point of my post on our juniors(outside backs) is for all the hype that follows them form many poster here, we don't have one regular first grader in the backline at all that has come from our own junior development system from the last 5 years.

Even with a piss weak backline the coach has opted for two nuffies over the so called wonder kids. I just have to wonder, most good to great outside backs start getting a taste of first grade in their teens or at the latest 20-21 yrs.

Where are all of ours? Look at Penrith ffs, they are the mirror image of us, yet we have nothing and they don't know where or how to fit them all in.

What is our problem???

I would argue MOST get a taste at 20 or over.
I started replying to duke111s post, but got bored too fast. His data may not be accurate though....

Nathan Davis is only 19, if he debuts this year, it will be as a 19 year old.
Bevan French is also 19, again, will be 19 if he debuts.
Reimis Smith is just 17. If he debuts next year he'll still be young
Goodall is 20, and if he debuts this year will still be 20, John Folau, same story.

There are 5 guys right there who look like they could be 'something'. I don't see the downside in them starting off the season in lower grades? Not everyone who debuts as a young guy does it in round 1....
