NRL 2024: David Fifita informs Gold Coast Titans he is leaving the club, Roosters and Panthers battle for star
David Fifita has officially quit Gold Coast but is tormented over a multi-million dollar decision between Sydney’s east and west.
Fifita told Titans management on Thursday morning that he would not trigger a two-year extension and
will now choose between NRL heavyweights Penrith or Sydney Roosters.
It is understood Fifita is grappling over his future, continuously flipping his preference.
Fifita, 24, is even contemplating the best real estate option – Sydney’s east or west.
Adding intrigue is the fact Fifita’s partner, NRLW star Shaylee Bent, who is off contract at the end of 2024, is from the Penrith area but has been linked with a move to the Sydney Roosters.
Both clubs are being patient but want a decision from Fifita soon.
And rugby league’s big hitters are out and about trying to convince Fifita where he should sign.
Fifita has spoken with Roosters coach Trent Robinson and influential chairman Nick Politis and is a good friend with fellow Queenslander Lindsay Collins through State of Origin.
He is also close to former Titans coach and current Roosters assistant Justin Holbrook.
It is understood Fifita and Roosters forward Spencer Leniu have also talked over the phone, the pair having previously played together with the Australian Schoolboys.
Fifita is also a mate of Roosters halfback Sam Walker through a Queensland connection.
Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has also been regularly in touch with Fifita while the giant forward has also spoken personally with Panthers playmaker Nathan Cleary.
The Cleary sell came around their club’s spine.
Penrith and the Roosters have offered Fifita around $850,000 a season - the Roosters deal to span four years, the Panthers contract covering three years. Gold Coast’s deal was worth around $1m a year for 2025 and 2026.
